I haven't left the truth, I actually have friends who are in the Charismatic Episcopal Church, which was founded by a bishop named Randy Adler who was affiliated with Bill Hamon in the 80s to early 90s. I actually attend a CEC here when I can, since things became kind of weird when my wife stopped attending my Coptic Church, and worse when she actually divorced me.
But for the record, I did have a problem with the celebrity, big conference stuff of the prophetic churches. There is a lot of pressure to put on big conferences, run up huge tabs by living large (inviting all your friends and associates and putting them up in four star hotels, first class air fair etc.). In reality, it looks like a buddy system where everybody washes each others back in this way.
I grew up in an upper middle class household, better than most of the country. My dad was at the top of the pay scale for working for the government in a government laboratory installation for weapons design and testing. I think I know a bit about living well for the middle class but also economizing. But it didn't seem some of the prophetic minister folks learned those lessons, well they didn't seem to act like it. They pretty much acted like their congregation was a blank slate for such projects. I think I'm pretty generous on the tithe and offering front (I think people should give at least 10% of their income and more in the way of offerings if they "feel led"), but these people were really pushing things with their multiple offerings etc. Some of the fund raising used did feel very manipulative etc. My best friend had a funny description of it he compared those methods to the old Warner Brothers cartoons with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck etc. where they had a trope where a money grubbing person would grab someone by the ankles, turn them upside and shake all the dollar bills and change out of their pocket.
