Before everybody rages at me all at once, let me explain. I'm talking about keeping slavery as it existed before the Americans enslaved the African Americans and treated them like cattle ...etc.

I am NOT saying we should have kept enslaving the blacks and I think that the Civil war was a push in the right direction and exposed the awful way in which Americans used to enslave the blacks. But, merely that we should have kept slavery as it existed since the beginning of time from before that. We shouldn't have abolished slavery just the way people treated their slaves and people are varying color at the time.

Technically slavery as it existed in Biblical times existed as the rich or middle class providing housing and food to the poor class was not only biblical but it was the way society ran for several thousands of years. They also used to treat their slaves with kindness and respect and treated them like one of their own and definitely not like the way Americans used to treat the African Americans. Once America came around slavery took a turn for the worse and I don't blame Lincoln one bit for starting the civil war. I'm not saying change the world and bring back slaves I'm just asking "should we have kept the slaves?"

I mean you could argue that slavery is out of date now and there isn't much for slaves to do anymore. But there is PLENTY that a slave could do for their master including things that a butler or a maid can do for us. And we don't have to pay like $200,000 a year for those services. Do you agree? Why or why not?

I can only think that someone has sold you a 'bill of goods' about the nature of slavery in Biblical times!

What do you know about slavery in antiquity? It isn't as if the Romans didn't rape and abuse their slaves as well.

And it also isn't as if slavery doesn't still exist. We call it human trafficking these days, and unless you are in favor of sexual slavery and forced labor, it is not good.

You may mean indentured servants. That's still common, including in the U.S., where it's typically harmful because it's not like that old kind in Israel between Israelites and not obeying the regulations Israel had, such as debt forgiveness every 7 years.

It is acceptable if the OPer desires it. The problem comes if he tries to force his desires on others......

Legal slavery has been abolished, but illegal slavery has never gone away world wide. Slavery of any kind is anti-christ.

You're seeing the normal way people always misguess what the other person is talking about on the internet, CF being just like any forum in that way, but even if you are thinking only about indentured servitude -- well, it's never under the good situation that was possible in ancient Israel.

In modern America indentured servitude is not so good in practice.

Some may know that old fashioned indentured servitude was outlawed in the U.S.

In response, people simply came up with new versions....

Workers recruited from Mexico, South America, Asia and elsewhere to work in American hotels and in such labor-intensive industries as forestry, seafood processing and construction are often ruthlessly exploited.

They are routinely cheated out of their wages, which are low to begin with. They are bound like indentured servants to the middlemen and employers who arrange their work tours in the U.S. And they are virtual hostages of the American companies that employ them.
Opinion | Indentured Servants in America

Contrast to ancient Israel, where the indentured servant was a fellow Israelite, and the direct scriptural command from God was to treat them well, that they are automatically released nationwide every 7 years regardless of situation, and more.

About modern slavery in the U.S. -- it's really nasty stuff in practice.

Young girls are kidnapped or tricked, and forced or browbeaten into becoming prostitutes, and then kept in that forced prostitution with threats and such.

Today I learned beating your slaves into submission (or in some interpretations, to death, provided they don't die immediately) is treating them with "kindness and respect."

I don’t think enslavement is loving in any measure. I am a bondservant to a benevolent God. But man could never operate as He does. I embrace His chains but would not affix my own to a living soul.

I feel it’s acceptable to employ others to complete the tasks we’re unable to perform. With the caveat that our wages are fair and we treat them humanely. I don’t believe employment of any sort is an authorization for abuse or mistreatment.

Should the world have kept slavery? Why or why not?

I think we should not, even if it would be done by all the rules Bible gives that would protect the slaves, because:

The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them; that every man should let his man-servant, and every man his maid-servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; that none should make bondservants of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. All the princes and all the people obeyed, who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his man-servant, and everyone his maid-servant, go free, that none should make bondservants of them any more; they obeyed, and let them go: but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids. Therefore the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, At the end of seven years you shall let go every man his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you: but your fathers didn't listen to me, neither inclined their ear. You were now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and you had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: but you turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and you brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids. Therefore thus says Yahweh: you have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim to you a liberty, says Yahweh, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.
Jeremiah 34:8-17

The great commandment is that we love others as ourselves. Would you want to be a slave against your own will? if not, then I think you should not keep anyone slave against his free will. :)
