The Parable of The Talents has NOTHING to do with money, nor our abilities, talents, etc....

It's all about how much we know of the TRUTH / Mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

It is knowledge that isn't revealed to everyone but only to those who have ears to hear.

The correct answer:

Matthew 13:11-12
He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.…

It's about being fruitful for the Lord whereby one will enter God's Kingdom and be rewarded accordingly according to their faithfulness or good fruit. It can include their talents (speaking ability, artistic skills, etc.), and resources (money, and possessions) to make this happen. It is their good works or faithfulness towards the Lord in this life. For the unprofitable servant was cast into outer darkness where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth. He buried his talent (i.e. he did not use his skills he could have used for God, and or he did not contribute any resources towards the Lord's kingdom) so as to show His faithfulness. It's pretty straightforward and easy to understand.

"Everybody got this parable (of the talents) wrong!"

Really?

How does mentioning a parable in the completely DIFFERENT CONTEXT of Matthew 25 & eisogetically applying it to a completely different context & only a PARTIAL quote OUT OF CONTEXT in Matthew 13--make everyone else down through Christianity's history wrong & you right?

Really? I will leave it at that.

I think you have the right idea, it seems like faith without works is dead. God saves you with grace, truth and the power of a dynamic fellowship. Your expected to do what you can and notice, the others doubled their money.

Personally I would have went to one of them and asked them what they invested in.

The parable of the talents has nothing to do with talents - and you are the only one who has understood this?? Right.

I don't see how that can be a "correct" answer.
For one thing, the words were spoken during a different parable.
For another, the man with one talent DID have something; he had one talent. He had that talent all the time that his master was away; it's just that he buried it and did nothing with it, not even let it make interest in the bank. THEN it was taken away from him, and he was condemned for being a lazy servant.

Then why call it a talent? Its meaning is established in Exodus 38:24 when describing the materials used for the tabernacle.

All the gold that was used for the work, in all the construction of the sanctuary, the gold from the offering, was twenty-nine talents and 730 shekels, by the shekel of the sanctuary.

The parable corroborates the association meant in the story is financial. The moral is being communicated in this fashion. The application is another matter. All things which God bestows unto us is the point.

He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.

But his master answered him, You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.

He calls him slothful for a reason. The teachings on sloth are plentiful in Proverbs and we’re shown the fate of the sluggard.

The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. —Proverbs 13:4

And in like fashion, the parable states:

So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

The key to the passage is found in these lines:

He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.

They are purposely noting the differences in response to its receipt.

What are the "mysteries of the kingdom of heaven," and would you say you have understood them? Are you using the "talents" wisely? Are you investing it for eternity?

I agree, but you give no explanation.

Talents = bags of money in the parable so in the spiritual realm what is the measure of “wealth” and the medium of exchange?

The same money is given to each just in different quantities, so it was not a talent of copper, a talent of silver and a talent of gold.

Notice the “ability” is the same for all three (the ability to increase talents) but at different quantities, so in the spiritual realm what one ability do people bring to the relationship?

It is not one was given a boat because he was a fisherman, one a field because he was a farmer and another sheep because he was a shepherd, there ability was the same in different quantities.

The ability would also have to grow with the increase in “what ever the talents are”.

No servant was given nothing.

No servant can back with less than he was given.

It always grew with use.

Well, I have understood that a talent is a measure of weight, and this can mean a weight of metal which is used for money. And money can have the ability to get various things done . . . not only one thing.

So, what in God's kingdom has the ability to get various things done, which God is able to do but humans can not?

Every once in a while a truly silly thread gets started here, but usually they die from lack of interest. IMHO this is wonderfully silly - the Parable of the Knowledge being actually about talents? Yep, the gospel writers must have been smoking something odd when they wrote about talents and not knowledge.

did you notice that there are two different forms of money being discussed in those scriptures?

The talent was the money minted by the Temple, and was used to buy and sell different supplies/animals that were then used for the sacrifices. That's why they used the Talents as an offering to God as well, because in the offering (tithe) were two different functions.
1. the money given to the Temple was used to support the priests who served God in the Temple.
2. God provides for the Jews needs, and in exchange they offer God a Tithe, paid in Temple coinage, and thus they return to God what was God's in the first place.

The Shekel was money minted by the government, and that was what was used to pay the government taxes to Rome, and the Temple taxes were paid to the Temple, using the shekel.

Note the last two letters in the word "shekel". The letters "el" when they fall at the end of any Hebrew word refer to God's name, El.
And that's why Jesus responded when asked about the tithe :"Give to God what is God's..." because He knew that it was common practice for the tax collectors to "cook the books" so to speak when collecting the taxes.
So if a coin is a shekel, then it belongs to God. And all God asked for was a tithe (10% off the top. In other words the best of the spoils.)

Giving God the top 10% is not only right, but it allows us to show God our respect, our admiration, our gratitude, and most of all, our love for Him. And He who has everything, allows us to do this one thing for Him, and it pleases Him to be recognized and loved by us, His children, in this way.

What the Parable is saying is that to "gain more" Not really to share it indiscriminately - in the context of Knowledge of the Truth and the mysteries of heaven.

Because if I share this knowledge indiscriminately and I happen to be wrong - misinterpreted this knowledge, then I would have deceived many, wouldn't I??

What's the most interesting part of that parable is what the condemned guy really did. What was his big mistake. It think this is the same mistake many (if not most) Christians are making. :(

And precisely how do you know that you are not sharing this knowledge indiscriminately all over the internet this very moment? And how do you know that every other Christian has been deceived about this parable, but you alone are not?

All things which God bestows unto us is the point.

None of that matters if a person doesn't have all the Truth.

All their efforts, money, ability, resources, etc goes into benefitting this dark world, instead of God.

The Pharisees also knew some of the Truth (like we do), but not all...So they end up making their converts more a child of the devil than they do. And clearly that isn't their intentions....They genuinely believed they are renderering a service to the Lord.

The abilities and resources they spent ends up benefitting this dark world instead of God.

Good intentions is not enough.

I'm only explaining this parable.

But the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, that's another thing. I haven't shared it yet and I probably never would. I really don't have to share it.

This something that would be revealed to you, little by little if you stop feeding into the charms and the mindset of this world and think like a little child.

You have to think like a child and you'll see it. You'll find it in the Bible too. Unless you become like a little child, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

This how Mary Magdalene received the highest commendation from our Lord

She only cared about listening for the Truth.

The other disciples were more concerned about the work and losing money.

None of these matters - abilities, effort, money, resources. You may use all these for God, win people for Christ....... But if you don't have all the Truth, more or less, you end up deceiving people as the Pharisees did. It's worthless...

This is why the Parable of Talent is NOT about these things, it's only about the Truth - the right context in Matthew 13:11-12.
