Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed he was 'Michigan's Man of the Year.' That's not a real award

Some are questioning a statement made by President Donald Trump during a rally on Thursday where he claimed he was named Michigan's Man of the Year. The award, however, doesn't appear to exist.

The statement came about 30 minutes into Trump's 90-minute speech at his re-election rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, as the president thanked Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel for her work.

McDaniel is the former Michigan GOP chair, who Trump credited in the speech with helping him win the state during the 2016 general election.

"I used to complain and you know I just –– I'd go [to Michigan] and I'd say, 'They're stealing your car business,'" Trump said. "I go for years. In fact, five or six years before I even thought about running, for whatever reason they named me man of the year in Michigan. I said, how come? I didn't even understand it myself, but I was named man of the year. I wasn't even political. That was years before I did this, but I was always complaining that our car business is being stolen."

There is no such award. The closest thing is 'Michiganians of the year' but that is only for residents of Michigan.

So he just made it up. Lied.

Business Insider shed more light on the matter. Apparently, Trump was presented some award stuff at a Republican party dinner in Michigan in 2013.

Apparently, Trump was lauded by Republicans in Michigan. That actually fits the context of Trump's story.

I think you're right about that. The people who support him don't seem to fact check him and they will also defend him even when it's perfectly clear that he either stated something wrong or he lied.

Well, you see, FreeinChrist, it's obvious that Republicans in Michigan really like Trump. So it's not that he really lied, per se, by saying he got an award naming him Michigan Man of the Year ... it's just an alternative fact to saying that people love him over in Michigan.

President Trump lies about pretty much everything. He makes up his own facts, figures and statistics. He is the epitome of the 'used car salesman' ideology. Just tell people what they want to hear and support it regularly and constantly with statements such as, everybody agrees with me or I've talked to hundreds, thousands, millions of people who agree with me. A secondary tactic of the 'everyone agrees with me' approach is this, 'I got an award'. The implication being that not only does everyone agree with me, but they feel so strongly about their agreement that they have given me some reward.

It's a tactic and a ploy that he uses very well. Unfortunately for the country, there are a great many people who believe these claims and they fall for the tactic just as a consummate salesman knows that people generally do. One of the first sales techniques that most salesman learn is the 'agreement principle'. If you can get the person that you are trying to sell to, to agree or to tell them that most people agree, then they are more apt to buy what you're selling. We all have this innate desire to be accepted by the larger group and so when someone tells us that 'everyone agrees' or ' most people agree', then we want to believe it also so that we are not left out of the group.

There is a similar, but opposite tactic, where one shows the other choice as somehow being the 'fool's choice'. We don't like to think of ourselves as foolish or stupid or outsiders to the group. So when someone shows us or tells us that those not in agreement are foolish or stupid, our natural inclination is to not want to be a part of that group. This was the tactic that President Trump used in speaking about Jewish voters. He stated that those who aren't in agreement with him or don't vote for him are 'without knowledge'. That's a euphemism for 'stupid'. Well sure, no one wants to be stupid, and so they think, "gosh, I better get myself into that other group."

It's all a brilliant psychological gambit on the president's part. However, I think that Jewish people, as a group, are more intelligent than the average person and I don't think they are, therefore, as likely to fall for these psychological tactics.

This cover — dated March 1, 2009 — looks like an impressive memento from Trump’s pre-presidential career. To club members eating lunch, or golfers waiting for a pro-shop purchase, it seemed to be a signal that Trump had always been a man who mattered. Even when he was just a reality TV star, Trump was the kind of star who got a cover story in Time.

But that wasn’t true.

The Time cover is a fake.

There was no March 1, 2009, issue of Time magazine. And there was no issue at all in 2009 that had Trump on the cover.

I'm not sure that is exactly the case. Trump's grip on reality is so tenuous that he may actually believe he is Michigan's Man of the year. Or that he kind of knows he's not really, but close enough to be trolling Democrats with it. You're applying concepts of "true" and "false" to a situation where they have no relevance.
