Buying Greenland: Trump haters mock the idea, but China is paying attention

One of those issues is the vital importance of Greenland, its horrible mismanagement as the Danish elite virtue signal about their environmentalism, condemning its 55,000 residents to poverty-stricken lives, and the national security risks economic dereliction invite. The incompetence ruining Greenland, in fact, compelled Greenlandic officials to reach out to China as they searched for a Sugar Daddy to fund infrastructure projects.
...
In 2017, Greenland’s prime minister flew to China and asked, as the Journal reported in February of this year, “Chinese state-run banks to finance the new commercial airports, including a big one for one of the smallest capitals on earth, Nuuk, which can now be served only by propeller planes. The bankers were interested, people at the meetings said, so long as a Chinese company constructed the airports.”

Reports indicate this action was triggered by Denmark refusing to help.

Then-Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis was not happy and convinced Danish officials to fund the infrastructure, sidelining China. This was an effort by China starting in 2018 and only ending when they officially withdrew in June of this year. For those who look past their shallow view of the United States and the administration, one would know it’s no coincidence that the president’s remarks on Greenland became public just two months after we successfully fought off China in their latest swing at the North American island.
...
“[T]he Danes have chosen to treat the territory, for the most part, like a giant nature preserve. And that’s why the native population of Greenland mostly lives in relative poverty as poor dependents of the masters in Copenhagen. Yes, it’s an odd kind of neocolonialism there in the North Atlantic as the politically correct Danes pat themselves on the back for their ‘enlightened eco-consciousness,’ even as Greenlanders stay poor.”

Why isn't Trump trying help Mexico. That's closer to the USA?
He is.

He has new agreements in place with Mexico to help them with their immigration problems and to help them in trading with the United States.

Has anyone asked the native Greenlandic people what they would want? Do they not matter?
LOL, the leaders of Greenland have declared they don't want the US to purchase Greenland.

I'm not aware that anyone has polled the populace.

My advice to the people of Greenland is to observe how Trump treats Puerto Rico. Also...

None of that explains why Trump wants to buy Greenland. There are plenty of mismanaged geographically isolated lands out there. Trump's interest in this one has nothing to do with the suffering of its peoples.

If Trump could do so he would annex Greenland, declaring he was liberating the people.
Maybe he could ask Putin for some tips about how to set up a referendum.

The people of Greenland have been poor for a very long time, though not completely destitute. Nobody cared about them.

Now their glaciers are receeding, they finally have an opportunity to become rich. Should the hopes for resources pan out, they might become very wealthy. So now all the superpowers want to snuggle up. I guess it's only a matter of time before one of the superpowers decides that it needs to "protect its interest".

Riches can be a curse.

Greenland would have been a nice purchase but the Danes aren't selling. The US has a history of buying territory from others. It a is a totally reasonable idea. Since it does take two willing participants to come to an agreement and Denmark is not willing it will not happen.

Or the US could annex the West and Russia annex the East. Share the fun.

Lol, even this insanely biased article doesn't support the idea that Trump has 'secured Greenland's independence'. Random association with something else isn't an argument.

It's not a random association. Trump freed them from being vassals to China ... or Denmark.

Then that should end the discussion. Though Trump also feels he was dissed by the Danish PM. And being the egoist that he is, he has trouble letting that go.

I'm sure he really wants Greenland for its potential natural resources. Of which there may well be an abundance. But the ice sheet covers 80% of the land. And IIRC, it ranges from something like 10 to 3000 m thick. I have no idea if it's economically feasible to hunt for--and try to recover--crude oil, natural gas, minerals, and the like.

It is, and the place is thick with prospectors as the ice cover melts. Great place if you're addicted to playing penny mining stocks like me.

Playing the odds gives me an idea. Maybe Trump sees an untapped market for a resort in the grand style. I can see the tag line: "Come visit the Trump Greenland Hotel and Casino. Outside, our weather is cold. But inside, our tables are HOT!"

So the way this works is when the president says something that makes headlines the rightwing PACs start spitting out purchase orders for online content to support the president's position.
The creators are free lance of course, and can accept or decline any of these jobs. So just think, somebody actually looked at this order for regime change in Greenland content and actually said to himself, "yup, I'll take that one!"
Does anyone one know if any youtube creators have taken this one on? I know none of the big names have touched this, but maybe some of the smaller ones making a name for themselves and taking any job they get?
