Hmmmm. Before going to the article I had imagined some white girl with a Cindy Lauper style multi-colored do that they tried to make uniform. Never thought of an African American youth.

Spikes I can understand. Back in the 1980s spikes were popular with guys and I read an article in an engineering magazine that a draftsman in London had been fired for wearing spikes kinda like this:

He had soaked each spike with superglue and had them sharpened to a needle point.

One would think that something like this would necessitate a call home and maybe sending the student home for the day. The idea that they thought gleefully using a sharpie marker on his scalp was acceptable is ridiculous, yet not surprising.
