We talk about the gun show loophole being sellers selling guns in the parking lot but not inside the actual show; clearly this isn't the case in AR.
This man had tables in the gun show and was legally selling guns without a background check.
Linck, who later said he doesn't identify with either political party, supports closing the so-called gun-show loophole and requiring background checks for all gun sales.

"I have tables here, but there's no background check," Linck told O'Rourke, a former Texas congressman.

O'Rourke asked him whether Linck would accept a requirement that gun-show sellers like him get a federal firearms license, and Linck responded he would.

Another man, a Republican gun owner, said..
Their political differences aside, Beaver said he told O'Rourke, "I respect you for talking to me."

"I saw him walk by and said 'wow what's he doing here?" Beaver said as he recounted their conversation.

He even said he might be willing to support O'Rourke's assault weapons buy-back plan -- so long as he got a fair rate and "the rest of America takes a part in it" too.

For his part, O'Rourke told ABC News, he felt he "learned something by listening to him."

"We're not going to get this done until we include everyone in this conversation," O'Rourke said. "You're never allowed to write anybody off because they're a Republican, because they're a gun seller, because they're at a gun show."

Laws are different in different states. I solidly believe in states rights, but it seems to me that because of interstate transportation of guns and the cost to both human life and actual economic cost to communities through gun violence, it may be time for tougher federal gun laws.

It may be time for tougher federal gun laws? I dunno....seems like we can probably handle a couple hundred more mass shootings before we do something RASH and SCARY! Can't we outlaw video games and lock up the mentally ill first? Then we can try mandating school prayer. And if (IF) all that doesn't work we can eliminate divorce as a legal option in the US. And then we can start forcing the Pledge of Allegiance again.

I imagine that all that will take care of our mass-shooting "issue" here in the US. But if it doesn't THEN we can maybe talk about possibly thinking about adding some potentially non-impactful half-measures related to the idea of possibly thinking about doing something about gun ownership in the US. Or at least form an "exploratory committee" to start the process of setting up a blue ribbon panel to look into setting up a larger study of gun ownership in America.

I can imagine a lot of things, too - like Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis double teaming me like the meat in a Black Swan sandwich on a private island in the Maldives with Eric Ripert standing by to handle the day’s catch and Dale DeGroff there to make sure I’m never not drunk.

Unfortunately, however, imagination often doesn’t correlate to reality. Video games have nothing to do with violence; school prayer means nothing if you force it on people; and locking up the mentally ill is a perfectly draconian approach to sick people who need help. Perhaps we should also lock up all the Crohns sufferers in order to stave off public defecation.

Poor Beto. In his re-launch of his re-launch of his re-launch of his presidential campaign, he spent all of 30 minutes at a large gun sellers show and came away not even knowing what an AR-15 costs.

If that allows us to stop the mass shootings that's probably worth a try! I mean maybe we can get some investigator to compare the rate of Crohns' sufferers with the number of gun homicides in the USA. Because right now there's only ONE statistic that DOES correlate (number of guns owned per capita) but that's not a rational thing to deal with.

We need to deal with what is POSSIBLE and that includes a registry of the mentally ill, locking up Crohns' disease sufferers and outlawing all violent video games (all video games would probably be a better place to start).

The way to solve a problem is to start with the POSSIBLE. ANd when you've exhausted all of that then you are left with the impossible at which point you throw up your hands and accept that as an American citizen you are just as likely to die in a hail of bullets at church as any Afghani.

Will there be a stipend for being on the exploratory committee???

We already have more people locked than any other civilized country. -I- think it would cheaper to just lock up the sane and law abiding people. They could be safe and we would only need to finance one or two penitentiaries.

Jus' sayin'. It would save tons of money.

C'mon, that doesn't even make sense. The NRA has to save money...mansions for Wayne La P don't come cheap.

Yep, more laws sure oughta keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

I'm probably the only liberal in the nation who knows that America will never be gun free. In fact that idea is ridiculous to even consider. There are valid and sensible reasons why citizens should be allowed to own guns.

But, (and you knew there would be a 'but') we really really do need laws which make possession of assault style weapons (capable of rapid fire with large magazines) a serious criminal offense. There should be no legal way to sell these weapons and high capacity magazines except to the government for destruction.

I'm realistic enough to know that people will still murder others with guns. Domestic issues will be settled with guns. Stores will be held up with guns. Police will continue to think a cell phone in the hands of a POC is a gun. And recreational gun activity will continue.

But what America needs is relief from random mass shootings at public events. And the weapon of choice for these things are assault rifles with high capacity magazines. It just isn't the same if someone walks into a mall with a .30-30 lever action deer rifle with seven rounds before the shooter has to pull out more rounds and shove them one at a time into the magazine.

I don't want to get rid of all guns. I just want to get military grade weapons out of the hands of civilians. There is absolutely no practical use for an assault weapon but to kill people.

For a nation that has the MOST PEOPLE IN PRISON that does indeed seem to be our usual answer to any given problem.

We even came up with a war on drugs so we could keep minorities downtrodden!

The war on drugs may well have been even more sinister than just keeping minorities downtrodden.

Look at the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution real closely. The ONLY exemption to the ban on slavery is punishment for crimes which one is duly convicted. Then do some research on the corporations which use prison labor.

I commend O'Rourke for engaging in conversation with gun owners at a gun show.

The latest polling shows 77% support assault weapons bans now, and some of those people may have actually been at the gun show.

That he chose a growing suburban town, home to both a state and a private university, was a good choice for a gun show to visit, because well-educated suburbanites are more likely to want sensible gun reforms than rural Americans.

Why do you believe this?
Why do you believe that rural people are not as concerned for victims of gun violence as suburbanites?
What makes you believe the guys selling guns at this gun show were well educated suburbanites?

So what. What is important is what the gun sellers were saying.
What were "they" saying, Hank? Obviously, the candidate was having a photo op, that's all, not actually researching anything.

And of course, a dozen or so mainly left-of-center publications covered the event and made out like the visit was really important. All of that was no doubt arranged in advance by Beto's staff or else they wouldn't have been there to take pictures of him walking around, etc.

Are you saying that the guys that were there selling guns were lying?
Were guns being sold without a background check from booths/tables set up inside the gun show?

Well, I do know that when I checked into that story I found that not every vendor had complimentary things to say about Beto's knowledge or interest when it came to guns. None of that appeared in the OP here, I noticed.

The OP here only included one article. I would very much appreciate anyone adding to the narrative with links to other information, that's what a discussion looks like, does it not? So please add to the discussion with links to other articles that you have read.

My OP was not to compliment Beto, got that? The OP was intended to provide information about the lack of background checks at some gun shows and what gun sellers are saying. The politician could have been Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, etc., etc. it just doesn't matter!
