So a children's event with fun silly costumes? I don't see the problem.

what kind of creature dinosaurs are?

A diverse lineage of reptiles, the majority of which have long been extinct. The only surviving dinosaurs are what we call birds.

And crocodiles. And some sharks. Depending on which research you believe.

Dancing is forbidden in many Churches, so I imagine some frowning going on.

I agree it doesn't sound very authentic, right?

Not exactly. Birds are descendents of dinosaurs that had feathers.

Birds are just a very diverse group of theropod dinosaurs which survived the extinction event that killed off the rest of the dinosaurs. It'd be like if every mammal except rodents went extinct, rodents would still be mammals.

Forty percent of mammals are rodents.

And crocodiles.

No. Dinosaurs and birds are on one branch of the Archosaura, and crocodiles are on another. Crocs are not descended from dinosaurs.

And some sharks.

Where on Earth did you get that idea?

Depending on which research you believe.

Link to the paper that says sharks are descended from dinosaurs?

Forty percent of mammals are rodents.

Not disputing that. My only point is that saying that "birds descended from dinosaurs" and "birds are dinosaurs" aren't mutually exclusive statements. The same way that we can say rodents descended from mammals (true) and rodents are mammals (also true).

The only reason we make any kind if distinction between birds and dinosaurs is because the non-avian dinosaurs are long gone and all that's left are birds. But birds are dinosaurs in the same way that rodents are mammals.

No, it was for children. Dinosaurs were reptiles I think

They were reptiles. But defining "reptile" is itself a bit wonky. "Reptile" as a classification is more-or-less arbitrary. Reptile could be defined several possible ways. All tetrapod amniotes would be the broadest definition. More narrowly we could say it refers to all diapsids, thus excluding the synapsids (the only surviving synapsids being mammals). Or we could even more narrowly define it as all diapsids excluding birds.

Dinosaurs aren't lizards. Lizards are squamata, along with snakes.

Also, most dinosaurs weren't very big, it's just that most of the famous ones, and thus the ones that have grabbed the public's attention, were the big ones.

When Steven Spielberg directed Jurassic Park and wanted the recently discovered velociraptor as a major antagonist he decided instead to use deinonychas as the inspiration. Velociraptors were under 2 feet tall and weighed little more than 30lbs. Deinonychus, on the other hand, was far more intimidating. But not nearly as intimidating as utahraptor.

Synapsids came after diapsids. This is in line with mammals originating after reptiles erroneously thought to be dinosaurs.
