Hong Kong protesters sing US anthem, with US flags, against Chinese tyranny during airport occupation | American Military News

U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw posted a video of the singing citizens and said, “Hong Kong is a modern-day struggle between tyrannical rule and free democracy. Protesters stand bravely in the face of violence to combat China’s authoritarian regime. They remind us why we value our freedom in America, and should stand by their side as they fight for theirs.”
May God bless them. May Americans be reminded what this nation means to those in tyranny throughout the world.

Amen!

God bless this man, and the Hong Kong protesters.

Good luck getting help from the US other than moral support. Both sides are going to have to look for a graceful way to walk back and negotiate.

It's kind of weird that so many do nothing but point out America's faults - it quite seems that they hate the country - and yet the rest of the world looks to America as a beacon of freedom, with no end to the number of those even trying to emigrate here.

As for Hong Kong, I feel for the people. But the nations got together and formally ceded the city to China. In this case it is hard to deny China's claim. Accordingly, there currently is a massive capital flight out of HK, and undoubtedly the wealthy are picking up stakes as well. I don't see this ending well for the people there. Nothing has changed since Tienanmen Square. Were I there and had the means, I probably would try to get out too.

The one good thing I can see in this is that the Chinese government's brutal thuggery will be on full display, and that should give many potential "Belt and Road" victim nations pause to reconsider the wisdom of dealing with China. With Trump's current good challenge to Chinese hegemonic intent, this comes at a critical time.

They might have a different take on things if the US had spent a couple centuries oppressing them.

This is an aside, but it is important you be corrected. Many aspects of the USA are admired throughout the world. Many Americans are admired throughout the world. But American foreign policy has been arrogant, ill judged, exclusively self-serving and devoid of empathy for half a century or more.

You also need to get it into your head that it is possible to be critical of a friend and still consider them a friend. Demand unconditional respect and love and then you do run the danger of being hated.

If you examine the politics and the economics of the countries people are fleeing from, seeking entry to the US, the attraction is obvious. Given a choice between living in Hitler's Germany or Mussolini's Italy, I would have voted with my feet for Italy. That wouldn't make Mussolini's Italy a "beacon of freedom".

Which nations got together. The UK government was the only other government with practical involvement in the matter.

Now, as to the flag waving, that is the dumbest thing the protesters have done thus far. That will have both scared and enraged the powers in Beijing. This could get very nasty. Since my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and grandson live in HK I have been following events closely and that act is the most disturbing thus far. Why? It implies a total rejection of the Chinese political system, rather than a desire to make adjustments to the agreement that ensured a slightly different system and status for HK.

The protesters are making it clear to the world that they are rejecting tyrannical and abusive socialism/communism/marxism. Simultaneously, one might suppose they are hoping for support from the United States.

One can call it stupid but they are making a clear statement for the world to see. God help them.

Trump suggests ‘personal meeting’ with China’s Xi over Hong Kong crisis

He also warned in another tweet that if China wants to make a trade deal, they should respond “humanely” to Hong Kong.

President Donald Trump in a tweet Wednesday suggested a “personal meeting” with China’s President Xi over the ongoing Hong Kong crisis, as investors remained on edge about the trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

“I know President Xi of China very well,” Trump tweeted. “He is a great leader who very much has the respect of his people. He is also a good man in a ‘tough business.’ I have ZERO doubt that if President Xi wants to quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem, he can do it. Personal meeting?

Indeed, they must rely upon God, for no one in the west will aid them. There is little evidence of a fundamental change in mindset of the leadership between Tienanmen Square and now. Brutal suppression worked for them then, it will work for them now. They cannot afford the "infection" in HK to spread from the former colony to the mainland.

Hong Kong had been leased to the UK for 99 years, and the lease ran out. There wasn't any activity of 'nations'.

China's human rights abuses is the basis on which we should be (carefully) engaging with China to influence it, not because we're not making enough money.

I don't believe I said, or implied that the West was meant to help. I was responding to a post by NightHawkeye in which he said.
Simultaneously, one might suppose they are hoping for support from the United States.
I was noting that there was little* chance of that.

Perhaps you felt the phrase "for no one in the West will aid them" suggested a dereliction of duty on the part of the West. That seems a stretch. It was intended to imply "for no one in the West will aid them since the West is, for practical purposes, powerless in this matter". Sorry I wasn't clearer.

*Where "little" = British understatement for "less chance than a Triassic ammonoid winning £50 million pounds on the lottery".

Your use of the term “will” can imply choice. I contend that, excepting harsh language, the West is powerless.

"Will" can imply choice, but it may also imply a inability to carry out an act. Context determines which is applicable. In this instance no (practical) choice is available.

I can't imagine why Hong Kong thought that China was going to just let them exist as a "Special Administrative District" forever without dipping its authoritarian fingers in the pie.

I AM surprised, however, at Trump. Trump normally loves every strongman dictator he runs across. Only problem with Xi is that Xi holds more cards than Trump does and Xi doesn't need Trump in many ways. So maybe Trump is actually kinda scared of Xi (he would be if he knew what was rational...Xi could collapse our economy in an afternoon).

That was cast in stone when Hong Kong was transferred from British control. Hong Kong's fate was pretty much sealed. The fact that HK has been able to survive as long as it has with minimal impact from China's "oversite" is a testament to the power of capital in that small place. But it can't last forever...especially when they forget who is actually in command of the final say.

There is little evidence of a fundamental change in mindset of the leadership between Tienanmen Square and now.

Sounds like most Chinese won't have been taught about Tienanmen in the last 30 years, so, yeah that's a given.

Brutal suppression worked for them then, it will work for them now. They cannot afford the "infection" in HK to spread from the former colony to the mainland.

It surprised me that China was as willing to embrace a limited form of capitalism as they have! I mean still the ONLY place in my life that I've EVER seen a real-live Lamborghini dealership is in Guangzhou. But HK represents a whole new level of self determination that they must stop at all costs.

Perhaps because there is a 50-year transition agreement.
