Good luck getting help from the US other than moral support. Both sides are going to have to look for a graceful way to walk back and negotiate.

It's kind of weird that so many do nothing but point out America's faults - it quite seems that they hate the country - and yet the rest of the world looks to America as a beacon of freedom, with no end to the number of those even trying to emigrate here.

As for Hong Kong, I feel for the people. But the nations got together and formally ceded the city to China. In this case it is hard to deny China's claim. Accordingly, there currently is a massive capital flight out of HK, and undoubtedly the wealthy are picking up stakes as well. I don't see this ending well for the people there. Nothing has changed since Tienanmen Square. Were I there and had the means, I probably would try to get out too.

The one good thing I can see in this is that the Chinese government's brutal thuggery will be on full display, and that should give many potential "Belt and Road" victim nations pause to reconsider the wisdom of dealing with China. With Trump's current good challenge to Chinese hegemonic intent, this comes at a critical time.

This is an aside, but it is important you be corrected. Many aspects of the USA are admired throughout the world. Many Americans are admired throughout the world. But American foreign policy has been arrogant, ill judged, exclusively self-serving and devoid of empathy for half a century or more.

You also need to get it into your head that it is possible to be critical of a friend and still consider them a friend. Demand unconditional respect and love and then you do run the danger of being hated.

If you examine the politics and the economics of the countries people are fleeing from, seeking entry to the US, the attraction is obvious. Given a choice between living in Hitler's Germany or Mussolini's Italy, I would have voted with my feet for Italy. That wouldn't make Mussolini's Italy a "beacon of freedom".

As for Hong Kong, I feel for the people. But the nations got together and formally ceded the city to China.

Which nations got together. The UK government was the only other government with practical involvement in the matter.

Now, as to the flag waving, that is the dumbest thing the protesters have done thus far. That will have both scared and enraged the powers in Beijing.This could get very nasty. Since my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and grandson live in HK I have been following events closely and that act is the most disturbing thus far. Why? It implies a total rejection of the Chinese political system, rather than a desire to make adjustments to the agreement that ensured a slightly different system and status for HK.

Hong Kong had been leased to the UK for 99 years, and the lease ran out. There wasn't any activity of 'nations'.

I can't imagine why Hong Kong thought that China was going to just let them exist as a "Special Administrative District" forever without dipping its authoritarian fingers in the pie.

I AM surprised, however, at Trump. Trump normally loves every strongman dictator he runs across. Only problem with Xi is that Xi holds more cards than Trump does and Xi doesn't need Trump in many ways. So maybe Trump is actually kinda scared of Xi (he would be if he knew what was rational...Xi could collapse our economy in an afternoon).

That was cast in stone when Hong Kong was transferred from British control. Hong Kong's fate was pretty much sealed. The fact that HK has been able to survive as long as it has with minimal impact from China's "oversite" is a testament to the power of capital in that small place. But it can't last forever...especially when they forget who is actually in command of the final say.

Sounds like most Chinese won't have been taught about Tienanmen in the last 30 years, so, yeah that's a given.

It surprised me that China was as willing to embrace a limited form of capitalism as they have! I mean still the ONLY place in my life that I've EVER seen a real-live Lamborghini dealership is in Guangzhou. But HK represents a whole new level of self determination that they must stop at all costs.
