Or,...we could take politics and patriotism out of our sports events. I honestly never understood why some sports events were chosen to be started with the national anthem. Why don't we play the national anthem before we watch movies in theaters? We don't plan it before concerts or many other public gatherings. How about we play the national anthem every morning at some set aside time on every TV and radio station so that the entire nation can participate? What is the reasoning behind playing the national anthem at sporting events? We could then be just like N. Korea.

I honestly never understood why some sports events were chosen to be started with the national anthem.

I imagine it's a holdover from a time when spectator sports of the kind we have here were a relatively new concept in the country's history. Back when America was still a legit country.

On that basis, my guess is that hearing the national anthem was intended to be a reminder to everybody that whatever sporting, class-based or ethnic rivalries might exist between the teams and the spectators, they were all still one people.

But things change. Obviously.

Sorry, I wasn't actually looking at your name when I wrote it and I was thinking it was colorsthatblend. You're absolutely correct, and I think I've correctly acronymed it before. Honest mistake.

Sorry that you don't know what I mean. That makes two of us because my response was to let you know that I didn't know what you meant by referring to our past as being 'when the nation was legit'. I think the nation is still pretty much legit, at least it's still on all of the world maps that I've seen lately.

You totally missed the point on that one. Donald Trump had just told his supporters in a rant players who kneels during the national anthem should be fired. Queen Elizabeth OTOH never did anything that caused the problems American racial minorities suffer today or criticized her constinuents for trying to bring such issues to the public spotlight. So the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens did not have any reasons to kneel during "God Save the Queen" after doing so during "Star Spangled Banner."

BTW at the time, the Jaguars had a shield decal on their jerseys specifically to show support for the Navy, which has a base in Jacksonville. It was a permanent fixture on those uniforms.

I just don't hold any respect for a duplicitous act by a mediocre QB who has followers that are easily led by his agenda.
He, who will not be named, should have been fired. As should have every follower in uniform that took at knee. Then and during the next season, if this behavior continues.

America was founded by forefathers that left England due to their politics. Now American football players who are paid millions in America, and would never see that kind of money playing anywhere else, disrespect their home country while showing respect for a foreign nation that caused the founding of this one. After a bloody battle to insure our independence.

The laziest cheapest act follower football players can exercise is to take a knee during the anthem.
That doesn't accomplish a thing, not one thing, to alter the so called injustice they think they're kneeling to protest. With their millions? They could do a heck of a lot more than take a knee that, as one sports caster when it all began noticed, could just as easily be interpreted as kneeling in prayer during the anthem. But do they? If so it doesn't make the same news as their kneeling does.

Now networks start the games after the national anthem so that the disrespect isn't broadcast. But the damage is done.
Stand up! Or lose your contract for ethics violation. That's how American football should run their business.
Last year two Texas high school football players thought they'd emulate this nonsense right before the game and during the anthem.
Big mistake. The coach made them strip off their uniforms right there on the sidelines. No, they weren't naked by any stretch, and they were off the team! Not the only time this was done.
Oh, if only the American football owners had that kind of guts, we'd see football players stand during the anthem, or stay in the locker room until it's over.

Put their money where their knees are! Otherwise, it's a weak gesture that does nothing but make them look like rich spoiled ungrateful anti-American radicals who would rather bow than actually spend money to make their communities better and safer. Not the gated rich communities where they live. But those places where they were raised, or that they hear about needing support.

Why is that ridiculous? They are Americans protesting actions done by the governments in the United States. They have no say in what goes on in the UK, so why would they protest?

You're way off there when you didn't know CK started the knee protest.
He wasn't going to be resigned to the team because of his play performance and this decision came down well before he took the knee. That's why he took the knee.
I know his girlfriend, who is an activist in BLM. Who is a Muslim, as is himself now after turning away from the Christian faith he was raised in.

And you bet the teams weren't going to sign him after that. Because they know the real reason for his knee act. They're in business. They're not going to sign a punk who radicalizes business and seeks to lead a fake movement to cover his own responsibility of mediocre play that insured he wasn't resigned, and wasn't going to be picked up either.
Those teams spokespeople who defended his behavior as free speech covered their inaction due to the behavior of the follower players on the teams. Because if they'd spoken the truth they didn't want to start a race conflict. Which was sure to happen being KC's girlfriend affiliation and their predisposition to violence and radical acts. KC knew this too.

When he wasn't resigned, which he knew was coming because he had a meeting with the coach and the owner and others, his knee act would make it look like that was why he wasn't resigned. He premeditated the whole thing with his g/f.

A long, long time ago, I suited up for about 40 football games in high school and college. I do not remember a single time when we were actually on the field during the anthem. I guess after the Gulf War or 9/11, it became a big deal to make the anthem a showy patriotic event.

Until then ,as a spectator, the anthem was a chance to grab a beverage, look at the cheerleaders, etc. During the anthem lots of future Trump voters did not find it necessary to remove their hats, much less do hand over heart.

I would not kneel if I were a player but I sure as heck believe allowing people to do so is way more patriotic than advocating sending someone else’s kid to a combat zone.
