I have no idea what to make of the movie. I saw the trailer and can’t tell who it intends to make fun of. On one hand, it could be making fun of conservatives for supposedly being paranoid about liberals killing them, or making fun of liberals by having conservatives be the victims who manage to fight the, and stop themselves from getting killed. Either way, even if there hadn’t been any shootings this movie would have been controversial.

I doubt it will be permanent. Blumhouse is a relatively small production company. I don't think they can afford to throw away almost $20 million (which is the production budget of the movie).

I'll venture a guess that Blumhouse will release the movie later on, when there's only a fraction of the current controversy. I find it telling though that the reason the movie has been delayed only because of the shootings. The backlash isn't what stopped the film's release; the controversy did.

The Wiki page says the movie has been shelved though. So take my guesses and hunches with as many grains of salt as you see fit.

I don't know if I'd be opposed to seeing it, but I do feel like the sort of dark satire like the Purge was supposed to be is kind of too difficult to make sense of, from an audience perspective. Writers should be able to communicate their ideas clearly to their audiences, not just with shock, awe, or strange premises like the one in this movie.

When the Purge first came out, people were making fun of it since they figured that such a thing would never happen and it would be unrealistic to expect everyone to become a killer. (The premise of the Purge is that one day out of the year, all crimes are legal, but it just leads to supposedly ordinary people coming to attack people with a better sense of morality.) If anything more white-collar or non-violent crime could also occur. One day of anarchy is too chaotic to be government-sanctioned and no one would support such an idea.

That's perfectly understandable. I haven't seen the Purge but I probably wouldn't find it interesting at all. The weird thing about Hollywood is that despite their misguided beliefs, sometimes we as Christians may have to attempt to pay attention to what they're trying to say in order to understand their worldviews and reach them.

I don't buy that this movie was intended to be satire. The Wikipedia page's edit history shows no mention whatsoever of satire until the very day the backlash kicked up. Then and only then did people start claiming it's satire, black comedy, a joke, etc.

I don't buy it for one minute. This movie was meant to be wink to certain parts of the audience.

I only watched the first movie. Apart from feeling sorry for Ethan Hawke for having such idiots for family, I thought the "message" of the movie (to the degree there is such a thing) is that people are all basically horrible and will turn to violence, rape, torture, murder and all the rest if they have a chance. Very misanthropic.

While men aren't angels, my experience is that most people are basically honest, basically gentle and basically harmless. Exceptions prove the rule. We're not perfect but we're not a human race made up exclusively of murderous psychopaths.

If you mean that they "get" us Christians, I disagree. Many of them are atheists and while any good writer can do his best to get into the head of a character that isn't himself, it doesn't compare to someone who actually is the sort of person he/she is trying to portray in a work of fiction. Most of these Hollywood types are also rather sheltered in that they have lived among famous people in southern California their whole lives. Others were noticed and became famous that way, but even so there is still a large disconnect, I think, between the people who make most of the movies and the various groups of people who watch them.

Any examples of movies where they actually "get" Christianity? In my experience we get stereotyped as anti-fun, sexually repressed, horribly corrupt, or some combination of those. It's not as common now, I don't think, and it's certainly not in every movie, but it's certainly been prevalent in the past.

No, but I've heard of it. That's the sort of thing that I figured would help my case that people in Hollywood just don't get it. Taylor Swift wasn't born in SoCal, I don't think, but she's certainly been in their culture long enough. Of course, she's most likely just pandering based on whatever it is her agent and others told her was popular right now, and outrage against conservatives has been pretty popular since Trump got elected, despite Trump not really having anything to do with the homosexuality issue.

That's the entire point. And it's not happening by accident or as the result of a misunderstanding.
