"City killer" asteroid misses Earth — and scientists had no idea

Scientists revealed an asteroid dubbed by some as a "city killer" came closer to the Earth than the moon this week. The Washington Post reported that scientists apparently had no idea it was coming.

Asteroid 2019 OK came hurtling toward Earth at a speed of nearly 15 miles a second, before flying past. According to NASA, it was about 45,000 miles from Earth on Thursday.

"It would have hit with over 30 times the energy of the atomic blast at Hiroshima," astronomer professor Alan Duffy told the Sydney Morning Herald. Duffy called the zooming space rock a "city killer."

You can't believe both in NASA and in the bible at the same time, it's contradictory.

The fact they didn't see it in advance even with telescopes is why it's a big deal. It could have hit us without any warning

An asteroid with an explosive yield of 300 kilotons of TNT would still be relatively small (by asteroid standards). That's why detection can be very difficult, making early warning problematic.

That asteroid with 30x more energy is around 300 kilotons of TNT.

Many modern ICBM weapons are designed around that yeild (per warhead) meant to target enemy infrastructure, including cities.

Not exacly a hype. Even if you just completely destroy 1/3 of a major city with a nuke or asteroid, you'd still end up with hundreds of thousands dead and the city crippled for possibly a long time.

Most events like this occur more or less in the plane of the ecliptic. If a threat comes in above the plane or if it is small enough it could easily be missed. The irony of this is that if it were not scientists we wouldn't even know about it. There is no doubt that we need a more advanced early warning system.

Early warning for what purpose?
God is in control of how the earth was made, how it exists, when it will end.

It could have been is the point again. We have missiles designed to destroy cities. That they have not yet been used does not take away the potential.

The article discusses what NASA has planned for such close encounters. I believe their theory is to launch a ship to offset the trajectory of the smaller asteroids.
