What you’ve learned about beauty that will help others.

I've learned that there are many many kinds of beauty and that you can find at least one in every single soul.

I left it open-ended on purpose. I answered from both perspectives: for myself and the gentlemen I’m attracted to. Since you’re married, how do you prefer to look? What makes you feel beautiful?

That's difficult to put into words... I tend to think of myself as not particularly attractive, and so I tend to compensate by at least trying to have a put-together look; clothes, jewellery, make up etc which together is more than the sum of its parts. I like elaborate hairstyles (in my fantasy world I'd live in a Dutch crown braid) but am mostly terrible at actually creating them, so instead have a reasonable collection of pretty bun covers, barrettes etc which can give me more than a boring ponytail!

Your plate is full. There are simple DIY things you can do at home like a relaxing soak, spa aromatherapy machine, hand and foot treatments, etc. that provide good self-care. A massage would work wonders too.

Yes, but that's not really what I mean. To my mind, really good self-care would mean having your own needs met in such a way, on a daily basis, that you don't need to get to your day off and collapse into a bath, just to feel human.

A lot of what I struggle with is exercise. If I could more regularly find time for exercise which works for me (long story there) then it'd be easier to manage my weight etc etc.

Can you access Daily Burn? You can do it at home and they have an app.

I can do something similar, but it's time/energy that's the issue. When your working day is over twelve hours long, the last thing you want to do afterwards is exercise (and one thing that is not going to happen is me getting up earlier to do it. I am not one of God's morning people!)

What is your beauty standard?

I really liked the philosophy of Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty.

But I do struggle with self-consciousness as in certain social groups, there are unsaid expectations on how to dress/ look.

What do you like about it?

The fact that I don't need to feel pressured to look "perfect."

But then there are two different opinions on this.

One is that being yourself, with a bare face is beautiful...freckles and all (as in Dove's campaign).

Another, like my old-fashioned mom, is that wearing makeup is a basic etiquette, you cover your skin flaws in consideration of the viewer so they won't experience unpleasant feelings looking at them.

Honestly, I think questions of appearance are more social than that (just pleasing self, spouse and God). For example, I sit on the policy committee for my daughter's school; this afternoon our meeting will include review of the school dress code. Many of us need to dress to meet the expectations of our employment or other environments where the favour of those around us is sought.

Ideally, what we wore wouldn't matter, but that's not the world we actually live in...

I would fail her etiquette standard. Who has time to be wearing make up every day??

A scriptural view of christian beauty standards: Scriptures tell us to not get caught up in the things of this world. We are in the world, not of the world. We are vessels of the Holy Spirit of God.

Believing and following the risen Christ, our walk with Jesus, is, above all else, what Almighty God commands, for Jesus is LORD and Savior. God loves His children, the followers of Christ, the Body of Christ, the Bride of Christ, who is beautiful and without flaw:

  • Song of Solomon 4:7 - You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.
Christ looks at the hidden person of our hearts:
  • 1 Peter 3:3-4 - Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.
For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.
  • Psalms 139:14 - I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom and gains understanding:
  • Proverbs 31:30 - Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

The answers are in scriptures: believe in Christ as LORD and Savior; follow Jesus and obey His commandments; love the LORD with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind; and, love your neighbor as your self.

1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
