Last week's record-breaking heat wave in Europe has shifted north to the Arctic. Now, a "heat dome" is threatening the second-largest ice sheet on the planet. Meteorologist Eric Holthaus said on Twitter that the heat over Greenland this week could result in the loss of 40 billion tons of ice, enough to measurably raise global sea levels.

"We are in a climate emergency," Holthaus tweeted on Monday. Another climate researcher, Xavier Fettweis, said this week's potential melt is what worst-case scenario climate models have projected for 2050, reaffirming what many scientists are finding: that we're closer to the catastrophic predictions for climate change than previously thought... The arctic is melting, the permafrost is thawing, Siberia is burning and the european forests are dying.

Jup. I think we're finally past the tipping point.

Good job, mankind.
Not quite yet. The second day of the first test match of the current Ashes series is still underway at Edgbaston. As all Englishmen know, the world as we know cannot end as long as Test Matches are held.

Yes, I think this is largely correct, and it's definitely man made to anyone with a hint of objectivity.

But, no worries. Ultimate things are under God's control. Short term though, it could be a ride, as He will want us to learn a bit from our mistakes. It would be unsurprising to me on one level, at this point, with the advantage of not being in the field, instead seeing the whole forest (instead of only the tree), getting the 30,000 ft view, that every projection will be inadequate to see how soon Greenland will melt enough to say give a full 12" of ocean rise (and some areas will experience more than average locally, we learn, due to a variety of interesting factors). It's going to be a lot sooner, is my 30,000 foot viewpoint.

There is some good news though......
Israel has developed truly mega-scale desalination of ocean water......

This is far more so win - win - win - win than a silly Carbon Tax that would just create a massive bureaucracy.

Megascale Desalination
The world’s largest and cheapest reverse-osmosis desalination plant is up and running in Israel.

The terrifying Greenland ice graph that's shocked climate scientists

Yeah, that's just as concerning as it looks, especially if you live in Houston, Miami, or New Orleans, or New York City, or Charlestown, SC....

But anyone should be concerned. If you also get other news about the unusual thawing in the gigantic Siberian tundra for instance:
The poisons released by melting Arctic ice (BBC)
(this isn't a sensational headline it turns out....)

All at once, quite a few news stories. I'd seen a news notification perhaps from the some weather app that temperatures in both Greenland and the Arctic had soared 40 degrees (F) above normal..., so I was searching for that, and found the above.

Here's a link on that:
Greenland saw temperatures soar up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit above normal Wednesday, while open water exists in places north of Alaska where it seldom, if ever, has in recent times.
Greenland Was 40°F Hotter Than Normal This Week, And Things Are Getting Intense

Thats nature for you.

Last big thaw was the end of the ice age.

Dr. James Hansen has stated that the last time that atmospheric temperatures rose by three degrees ocean levels rose by about twenty five meters over four centuries.

Ultimate things are under God's control.

What if things are not? Sure it's nice to believe that there is some overriding divine force in charge of everything.

However, it seems to too many people use that believe as a way of abdicating any sort of personal responsibility.

Perhaps God expects us to actually treat His creation with respect and not destroy it?

You are right about that.

Nothing can interrupt the Ashes series.

The most important sporting event in the world.

Romans 2:6 God "will repay each one according to his deeds."

You'd need to differentiate there between those for whom the church is only a political club or such, and then a different orientation where the person actually believes. These two things are not the same.

All well and good, but it completely fails to address pitabread's point. It appears to me (and, I suspect, to pitabread also) that members of both groups are guilty of using the excuse. Are you suggesting this is only true of one?

You mean having an ultimate confidence in the outcome of life? Oh, yeah, believers do have that. But here and now, we are instructed to be good stewards, and for many that would mean not trashing the environment by burning fossil fuels carelessly at huge cost to our grandchildren.

If you tried to find out about Christians wanting to protect the environment, you would not have to look hard.

But, a key thing to remember here: largely people find what they look for -- if they only look for X, and not Y, then they will only find X, and won't see Y, even if Y is easily visible to others.

(and I don't mean some obscure little group. While we also hear similar messages in our own non-Catholic church, we can consider what the single largest church says:
Pope Francis’s Encyclical on the Environment | Earth Ministry)

I have no doubt that that many, probably most, Christians adopt the "good steward" attitude. I was confident that this was your view, but , in isolation, your post did not make that clear. The minority who hold the other view are "a clear and present danger".

"Greenland is also sweltering in the Northern Hemisphere’s heat wave: The island lost nearly 200 billion tons of ice in July, according to the Danish Meteorological Institute. On July 31, a record-breaking 56.5 percent of Greenland’s ice sheet was showing signs of melting, DMI glaciologist Ruth Mottram told the Associated Press. Images from the Copernicus satellite captured August 1 show multiple melt ponds, as well as burn scars from a recent fire and smoke from an active fire on the island.

"The Arctic blazes are not only scorching vast swaths of Earth; they’re also releasing copious amounts of carbon dioxide. June’s fires alone released more than 50 metric megatons of carbon dioxide, the WMO said, more than the total released by all June fires from 2010 to 2018.... "
The Arctic is burning and Greenland is melting, thanks to record heat

Sounds like it's time to buy real estate in Greenland and Siberia.

And I just might have prime beachfront property before long that I could sell.

Assuming the Russians don't completely contaminate the Arctic Ocean with sunken nuclear subs and nuclear powered missile disasters....
