The point of the trade war was to drive manufacturing back to the US. That isn't happening. The trade deficit increased. Instead, American consumers are paying more - like a tariff tax.

That's an oxymoron, if I ever heard one-'competent diplomats'. You need competent negotiators, and that's what Trump has. Negotiators who are looking out for America's best interests, not China's. And that's what we've got.

It is happening. Obama said manufacturing was dead in the US. Looks like he was wrong. Americans who choose to pay for goods made in China do pay more, but there are other options. IF they pay more, they do so willingly.
You know what's really funny? It was liberals who, in the past, used to criticize China and the rest of Asia and India for 'sweat shops' that made all these clothes you wear. And yes, I wear them too. But now you want to be best friends with a country that steals and copies all our technology because people like Biden and McConnell help give it away?
Also, when it's cheaper to cut logs in the US, ship them to Japan for milling, and ship them back to the US than it is to mill them here, there's a problem. And I'm sorry to say my dad's company participated in the same type of thing. Shipyards were charging an arm and a leg to build ships, so they built part in Liverpool and part in Japan, and got their carriers made for cheaper. Why? Because labor and materials were cheaper elsewhere. In both of these cases, it would have been more beneficial to either lower the cost of labor and materials here, or raise tariffs on Japan.
Our manufacturers deserve some favored status over other countries who sell us goods.

You say China is being hurt by the tariffs. I know American farmers are being hurt by the tariffs. Both sides have reasons to come to the table. So why do we have nothing?

No, it is not an oxymoron. Competent diplomats who work for the US and have knowledge of what is really going on in China and have developed a working relationship with China are important. They are not the trade negotiators necessarily. It involves a team.

If you can show me that ALL manufacturing has moved from China to Vietnam or India, you might have a point. But only some has moved there. Some has moved back here, too. We're not a dictatorship where we can demand that companies do that. But I am sure to buy something "Made in USA" before I buy a comparable "made in China". That's not to say I don't buy stuff made in China. I'm a model railroader, and lots I buy was made there.

Can you show me that growth in manufacturing output in the US has changed noticeably under Trump? Because the data doesn't seem to support that:

Do you really think a company is going to take a large hit on labor cost (and be less competitive) to support a political slogan?

I agree that regulations in the US market are prohibitive, but we've done something about those, too. Some companies won't, though. Again, it's a choice for the consumer to make, though. If a company makes products overseas, and the same or similar is made here, I'll choose the product made here, given equal quality.
