Bernie Sanders campaign announces it will cut hours to pay staffers $15 minimum wage, prompting mockery

Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced this weekend he will cut staffers' hours so that they can effectively be paid a $15-an-hour minimum wage, prompting mockery from critics who say the move is more evidence that Sanders' plan to raise the national minimum wage is hypocritical and would only lead to less work and more unemployment.

The Washington Post first reported last Thursday that Sanders' field staffers were upset that Sanders championed a $15 minimum wage on the campaign trail, and made headlines for railing against major corporations who pay "starvation wages" -- even as his own employees made "poverty wages."

In response, Sanders told The Des Moines Register he was "very proud" to lead the first major presidential campaign with unionized workers, but also "bothered" that news of the internal strife had spilled into the media.

The self-described socialist candidate said junior field organizers earn roughly $36,000 per year in salary, with employer-paid health care and sick leave. But he acknowledged that their salary can effectively dip below $15 per hour if staffers work much more than 40 hours per week, which is common on presidential campaigns.

The solution is to "limit the number of hours staffers work to 42 or 43 each week to ensure they’re making the equivalent of $15 an hour," he told the Register's Brianne Pfannenstiel.

I thought that was the Babylon Bee! That was real?
Yes and I'm glad this happened. People are getting a good look at these potential candidates and what happens when they enforce their own policies.

Let's go back when we were younger and in HS or college. We worked full time summer jobs. If we worked more hours we made more money. Seems like a pretty clear cut concept there. So Bernie is reducing hours, therefore reducing the time these staff members can campaign and do work for the campaign, just to get all to the $15 an hour mark.

I guess not having staffers work longer hours to see the campaign running means he does not have much confidence in his product (him). He also reveals what he thinks about why businesses and corporations exist---to pay a salary. He does not get it. Businesses exist because enterprising people put forth a product or products which customers like and it makes the owners money. The businessman takes profits and invests more in the product, create new products and expands the business. He/She takes risk and hires more people.

It's all so strange to me as an Australian. We have a very, very high minimum wage here.

Each year, social justice advocates argue that it should go up even more. Employer groups argue that job losses will result. The independent agency responsible looks at thousands of pages of evidence, umms and ahs for a while, and then moves it up by 25 cents, or something like that.

Consequently our minimum wage is always as high as it can safely go. Right now that's US $13.25

are not salary and hour wage different? if they are paid $36,000/year this is a salary, not an hourly wage and it is based on a 40 hour workweek. how is this different for anyone else making $36,000/year?

If $36,000 a yr. is 'poverty wages ' then millions of people in this country are being paid poverty wages by major corporations that can afford to pay more.

Not sure which report is correct or if Sanders changed after reports came out but the newest reports that I have found say that no staff or hours will be cut.

He didn't "cut hours" in the sense that most people mean. His campaign staff, who are salaried, were regularly working more then 40 hours a week, and if you converted their salary into hourly wage based on how many hours they were working, it dropped below $15 an hour. So essentially all he is doing is reducing the number of hours his staff is expected to work, without changing their pay.

So if they were starving before this, they're still starving.

He's paying twice the minimal wage. If that is still poverty wages, then there is a larger problem to deal with.
I think you missed the point of what I said, but anyway, what would be the larger problem if those were poverty wages? (They're not, but if they were.)
