I'm putting this here for better visibility.
Is this book by Fr. Seraphim Rose a good book?
I've been looking for another Christian defense against the occult, charismania and the New Age, and I've been thinking about buying this. I have some family that are caught up in New Age thinking, and others that are into dreams, visions, ect.
Also the culture seems to be getting more and more into the occult and evil as Fr. Rose predicts in this book. I've been looking for solid Christian defense against these things and would like an Orthodox perspective.
I've seriously thought about buying it but I see it was written in the 1970's, so I'm afraid it
might be a bit dated for today.
Has anyone read it recently and is it a good read?

it's a good read, just very heavy so tread lightly when you read it.
Will do. Is it still relevant for today? Much has happened since the 1970's in the area of the occult, New Age, charismania, etc. I remember the seventies very well.(I graduated H.S. in the mid-70's) and lived in Southern California at the time.
I read the Kingdom of the Cults by Dr. Walter Martin back in the late 80"s which was a good read I thought.

Constance Cumbie, author of HIDDEN DANGERS OF THE RAINBOW, found it remarkable.

I'm Baptist and in my church they say all Orthodox and Catholics are worshipping idols and are not saved, because they don't beleive in the gospel of grace, but rely on their good works to save them. Is it true?

Read that many years ago, but need to re-read. When I recommitted my life to Christ in the 80's, I read many of those books which addressed the growing New Age and occult movements of the time.

I'm neither Orthodox or Catholic, (yet)inquiring into both. The short answer is no.
They worship the true God in Triune form, same as we do, and are part of the Body of Christ.

no, we absolutely reject the idea that works can save.

We are saved because of God's grace.

In words only, but in reality trusting your good deeds to save you.

you really don't know what we believe at all. God in His mercy saves man. we cannot work our way into heaven, that's a heresy called pelegianism.

Rather, our good deeds are evidence of God's saving grace in our lives. If there are no good deeds then our faith is in word only.
Don't you recognise that many Protestants are trusting in a work for their salvation, saying the so called "sinners prayer"?

You see, your error is evident from your words. I'm already saved on the cross of Calvary. Nothing else is required from God. My faith is sufficient for Him.
You are violating the rules of the congregational subforums, doing the equivalent of urinating on the carpet while in a guest's house.

Thank you for coming in to post on this thread . I wonder if you have read the SoP for TAW ? Statement of Purpose - The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodox Statement of Purpose

Your comment <<You see, your error is evident from your words. I'm already saved on the cross of Calvary. Nothing else is required from God. My faith is sufficient for Him.>> does not really seem to be inline with the SoP

You are very very welcome to post in fellowship - but fellowship is not telling us that we are in error with our beliefs.

This prayer allows Jesus to enter your heart. It's the door you open for Jesus who's knocking.

And you don't think Orthodox have similar beliefs or practices?
