have always put volunteer work on resume especially places volunteered a year or more

skills picked up through non paid work can be referenced at interview
if one doesn't have a certain qualification through paid work, one might have picked it up through volunteer work

all the more reason to get professional advice re resume since you're not getting interviews for positions you want

when husband lost his job due to downsizing, he got professional advice/career counselling & sent over 100 resumes out

And what was the result of that? What happened? What job did he get? What work does he do?

he started as a supervisor in a totally unrelated field, took a pay cut, learned and worked into another job in company

it was a risk but the career counsellors encouraged him to apply to companies/jobs he knew nothing about because skills do transfer

they helped him with his resume
they also boosted his confidence as he was discouraged losing his job

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but I haven't been discouraged by getting laid off, in years. When I first started out it did, but now it's like... meh.... If anything it means that now the routine will be broken. At least something will be different. Some of my most happy days have been after being sent home. I dream of getting laid off now lol. Crazy huh.

Well Congrats to him. Well done.

This cracked me up. So that guy that doesn't do anything at all, while I work, he's promoted while I am demoted.

Additionally, the guy they just hired on, is paid the same as me, and he's been here a week, and I've been here years.

I've actually done this before. Another job had me train the guy who replaced me.

He also told me that his father is 43, and I'm 42. It's lovely to get replaced by someone who is young enough to be your son, has no experience, and is paid the same amount of money that you had to work years to get.

My life can be summed up to a running gag.

There are a lot of positives here brother, you are working and earning a wage, okay so it's not the best job in the world or the best paid but it's better than being in jail and causing chaos to other people's lives. You seem really down in life and whilst I don't know much about your life have you thought of seeing a doctor, no harm in getting a check up. Trust me speaking as someone recovering from depression and anxiety I can guarantee for a while my life was worse than yours to the point I was in hospital. If you want to know how bad it was check my blog out, but I came back from the bottom with help and I'm not going to give up on you.

You are right, of course. And I have had both worse jobs and better jobs.

There is nothing wrong with a £23,700 a year job. And there is nothing wrong with living a quiet life without bothering anyone.

And I suppose I should be happy to live in such a way.

But then I ask myself... why bother? For what?

When you know tomorrow will be just like today and all the yesterdays for the past 20 years.... why am I doing this? Nothing good will happen tomorrow. At least I have no reason to believe something good will happen, since nothing good happened in the past 20 years.

So then, what's the point? Is it enough, just to live out my life, day after day, until finally I grow old and die?

Because that's all that has happened thus far. I'm 20 years older than I was when I got out of high school, and all I have done is work, and pay bills, and work, and pay bills.

So I keep working, and keep paying bills, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, and decade after decade... then I die.

Working a crap job is not a problem, if you have hope for something better in the future. I have no hope of that.

People say, just have faith in G-d. Well I do. Now what?

Get up. Go to work. Come home. Go to bed. Wait for life to end.

How many hours a week do you work? Don’t you have free time that you can spend however you’d like?

It sounds to me, based upon your Bible study story, that your main challenge is with relating with people. Are you saying that in 16 months of togetherness you developed no friendships? It's been my experience that people who have trouble making friends become lonely and bitter, and it shows in the demeanor. As a result, they have difficulty in activities that require communication, and that hampers career aspirations.

If that's the case with you, then I recommend that you proactively develop your social skills. A counselor could help. There are also a lot of books on the subject. Do you have friends that you could ask for feedback on your personality? Often, we don't see ourselves as others do, and it can be helpful to get an objective perspective on areas you can address.
Yes, and there are a lot of You Tube vids on the subject of social skills.

Okay, looking in from the outside, have you thought of developing something outside of your work. I can relate to what your saying, although I enjoy my work to a point, my life was similar to yours. Now I volunteer as a facilitator at a local charity and I try and get out and about , drawing was also something I learned I could do while I was bored in hospital and I take pleasure in that when I'm not working. What are you interested in, what do you like, maybe learn a new skill...you'd be suprised what you might find out there.

Ahhh I see we have made a hole in that negativity field your generating, let's see if we can make it bigger.

Have you tried changing your routine, different route home, maybe stop for a coffee one day, walk in the park. Small changes, big things...

since you're single, you have more free time than say a married man going home after work and driving his kids places, helping with homework, etc

my husband's dad always said "boredom is self-inflicted"

so none of us would dare to say we're bored
there's always something to do, create, read.....

when we go out, we don't spend lots of money, either
we go to museums on "free" days or to free community, church, or library events, concerts in parks, or to a park
there's lots of free things to do, places to meet people

some day you'll be old and it will be tough to get around and do anything or difficult to read as eyes go bad and you'll wish you'd done everything you wanted to in youth

hahah! :D

Yes, I have of course walked in the park. I typically will walk 3 miles, in the local state park, through the wooded area. I like the wooded area, because no one is there. And I like walking through the park because it makes time go by faster. Plus it helps me do my favorite activity, sleeping. Nothing like a good walk, to make you pass out when you get home.

I have also worked at the homeless shelter, and joined some Church clubs. All were fine I guess. I stopped going to the church groups for various reasons. One group just sort of broke apart, and disappeared for the most part. Another, I just sort of realized that I was going to work the next day completely wiped out, and found it really wasn't worth it. They just met late on a Wednesday, and every Thursday I was getting to work in a zombie like state of exhausted. And lastly the group at the Church for all the people my age (at that time almost 15 years ago), for whatever reason I was never really part of the group. I poured everything I had into that, and after a year and a half, I realized not a single person cared I was there, and they wouldn't care if I wasn't there. So I stopped coming, and no one noticed. And that was fine since by the end, I no longer wanted to be where I wasn't wanted, anyway.

I'm not sure how else I should change my routine. I get home usually pretty wiped out. I go to bed, and when I wake up, it's time to get ready for work!

I don't drink coffee (yuck!), and it's too expensive to go out to a coffee shop even if I did. I'm baffled by how much money people are willing to spend on lightly flavored coffee water. Amazing how filthy rich we are, that we can afford to spend so much on a relatively small cup of coffee.

Yeah, that is possible. Entirely possible. But as it stands now, I can't even think of what I would ever want to do.

My parents bought a lake house, up on lake Erie, and I went up on the 4th, because they wanted to show it to me.

I found myself sitting inside the house, watching TV. They kept asking me 'what do you want to do?' and the answer was.... nothing. Do what? I realized just how sad and pathetic it was, to drive almost 3 hours, to sit in a beach front house, just to watch TV on the 4th of July, and then come home Saturday.

I just can't think of anything I would actually want to do.

is it possible that you're depressed?

Sure, I mean I've found life depressing since I started school. In high school teens, I knew life would get better. In college 20s, I hoped life would get better. In my working 30s, I was begging that life would get better.

I'm 42 now. I've learned not to waste my time on hope.

It appears from your job description and failed college experiences that you’ve pursued industries which require technical proficiency and that’s not your strength. This is reiterated by the things you said you weren’t able to perform in your current employment.

If you enjoy writing and participating in venues like these, you may want to consider similar positions on other sites. You could start as a volunteer to build up experience. Sometimes they’re listed as a community manager or something along those lines. You’d work from home.

To be brutally honest Andrew, life is not going to hand you things on a silver platter, you have to go and there and get them. If you listed what you have tried and what you could try you'd probably find find what you could try is a longer list. Take it one step at a time and don't be put off when things go wrong or not your way, keep going. The fact you are posting this on here is a step in the right direction and it never too late to realise life can get better but it's not going to come knocking on your door, looking for you, you have to go knocking on life's door until it opens. Make that list of what you want then go and get it, trust me on this....

You know Andrew I just realised something, you are not at the end, you are at the beginning. If you are at the end why did you post it here? You say you've given up but you haven't, you're just trying something new. So go out there and get it....or do I have to subject you to my gnome jokes?
