It's been revealed to me that God can only do good and Satan can only do evil.

So the question I have surrounds the following (not debating different interpretations of the bible but that's OK here also):

There are different verses about God not killing people: Exodus 32:14

"And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people."

and in the OT Moses killing sinners, then in the New Testament we are to stop killing, which some of society around the world has stopped like the USA for the most part instead of capital punishment.

So God stopped killing people in the new testament with the coming of Jesus the Christ.

Now my question is who is killing people? Is it Satan? I'm referring to natural disasters.

Now later in the bible God puts death and hell in the lake of fire: Revelation 20:14

"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."

Where also Satan and his angels were cast:

Revelation 20:10

"And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

So when someone dies from a natural disaster, who killed them, God created the earth, so Satan must have caused it to become dangerous somehow?

When mankind fell, everything on the earth was effected as well. Climate, animals the stability of the earth itself.

Matthew 13:28
28 He (Jesus) said to them, ‘An enemy (Satan) has done this.’

We all experience the consequences of sin in the world, one way or another. The Lord does intervene at times (thankfully), and sometimes not ... however we trust His wisdom even when we don't understand the things seen or the things unseen. He will save as many as possible.

So, when someone dies (natural disaster or otherwise) and all the horrific ongoings in the world they are the result of sin in the world.

In the meantime we are in the middle of a war and there are many many battles, many wounded, many casualties, yet we are to spread the good news .... a better world is coming through Christ our Lord and He wants you to be part of it!

Jesus has overcome all evil and we are waiting until He returns to end it all and create a new sinless world.

He will soon return and take home all those who survived in Him and the war will end... for eternity!!! AMEN!

Job 13:15
New International Version
Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him;

God Bless.

Thanks, that's basically what I was taught in the LDS church, so I wasn't sure if it was a Christian view also.

The whole earth and nature is suffering because of the sins of man it is bearing. So there will be natural disasters until there is sin and evil in this world.

Romans 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it
21 the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

Thanks, I need that pointed out. I've been wondering who or what causes all the death on the earth.

I think sin kills, when God is rejected, all kind of evil things become possible.

I have fearful thoughts about denying God. And sometimes I wonder the same thing.

Now my question is who is killing people? Is it Satan? I'm referring to natural disasters.

This is a very deep theological question. Mankind's evil is easily answered, but natural disasters are a more difficult question for the modern mind.

Is God in control of things like tornados, hurricanes, volcanoes, and tsunamis? If so, is it God's direct judgment upon those who are affected by them?

I would say yes to the 1st question, and no to the second. God is absolutely in control of nature, yet these occurrences are not usually directly God's judgment on the people involved. Let's take a look at a couple relevant Scriptures.

Luke 13:1-5 NASB Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. (2) And Jesus said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? (3) "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. (4) "Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? (5) "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."

Jesus indicates that the people who died in these tragedies were no more sinful than anyone else, yet they were still killed, and God was in control the whole time. Which leads us to the key passage for this topic...

Romans 3:9-18 NASB What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; (10) as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; (11) THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; (12) ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE." (13) "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; (14) "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS"; (15) "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, (16) DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, (17) AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." (18) "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES."
This is God's description of mankind... everyone is a sinner, and all sin deserves death (Romans 1:28-32; Romans 6:23). Sinners deserve death. So when someone dies, whether it be alone or as part of some great natural disaster, we are simply getting what every human being ever born (except Jesus) deserves. One final Scripture:

Romans 8:19-22 NASB For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope (21) that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. (22) For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.
This passage tells us that nature is in bondage to corruption, and this is because when Adam and Eve fell, creation was cursed along with them. So bad things now happen in nature; as a result of sin, death and corruption now reigns supreme over our fallen world.

In the end, it matters not whether we die from some horrible disease, or earthquake, or a tornado, or even a "natural" death at a good old age... what matters, what is tragic, is that we die at all. But God will one day put an end to this (1 Corinthians 15:50-58; Revelation 21-22), and there will be no more curse, death, and suffering.

PRAISE GOD!!!

Hope this helps;
Michael

Thanks Michael. I wanted to add to that, that Jesus calmed the tempest, and I think he can save us from these Plagues? Matthew 8:23-27.

And perhaps he does from time to time? So then disaster is a cause of the fall, and Jesus can save us from these disasters?

Yes. For example, there were some testimonies from the 2011 tsunami where Christians were miraculously protected. He doesn't always, but He can.

So when someone dies from a natural disaster, who killed them, God created the earth, so Satan must have caused it to become dangerous somehow?

"I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things." - Isaiah 45:7

"Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins..." - 2 Kings 19:25

God does use the instrumentality of his creatures to do his purpose, and that may include Satan or weather.

Yes I kinda get that feeling, like Satan is an instrument, like Job, when Satan used God's hand to strike Job 1:9-11

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; and the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’"

It is behind the scenes of King Ahab's death in battle. His life wasn't forfeited by chance, but was God who had purposed to put him to death through war by influencing the circumstances around him. We are seeing a glimpse of God's control over the affairs of men, even controlling the way an individual dies. In the story, he was shot at random by an archer whose arrow so happen to strike between his armor. How precise!

Yes that is interesting how he died. I still don't think I've seen an instance in the bible where God has actually came out as killing someone. I see in that story he sent a tempter which provided for his death.

I'm currently of the belief and mind that God doesn't directly kill.

How about Ananias and Sapphira when they lied to the Holy Spirit? Or Uzzah when he touched the Ark of the Covenant? Or Er the son of Judah? Or the Great Flood?

I don't believe it would be wrong for God to directly kill someone, he is the author of life and it is in his balance whether we deserve to live or not. If you are familiar with the Old Testament, God does speak of the disasters that fall upon his people as coming from him.

Yes I did some reading on that and I found this site which states that God kills: Examples of God personally killing people - RationalWiki

But I kinda think he is stating that he kills because he is the author of creation. But I'm trying to form my belief on the subject. There are examples like Egpyt and it says he sent the angel of death: Exodus 12:23

"When the LORD goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down."

So I kinda think he controls this destroyer "Abaddon" or "Apollyon" or "Angel of death", but doesn't do the killing himself. Revelation 9:11

"They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer)."

The atheist will look at this subject in another light and say that God is a monster. If they were honest with the text, in all the cases where he killed someone (directly/indirectly) it was connected with some gross sin that deserved it. They love to point out the book of Joshua for the mass "homicide" of Canaanites, but they aren't willing to admit that these same people were described as a people who sacrificed their children to idols, had perverse relationships with their close relatives, and practiced all sorts of abominable things that God "vomited them out of the land" for such and threatened to do the same to Israel if they followed after their manner of behavior (Leviticus 18:28).

The angel of death is an interesting one, because in the case of David's census it appears that Satan is a different person than him. Satan enticed David, but the angel of death was the consequence for heeding to Satan.
