Need advice,

Last week I was in an intense work-related training and one night I went to sleep and “before” falling asleep, on my back, I felt someone getting into bed with me (I was in a private dorm room) so I tried to react and see who it was and I couldn’t respond. I then felt something lay on top of me. A very heavy heavy weight on me. My mind panicked and I tried to push it off. But again, I couldn’t move. I truly believed like someone was going to assault me. Suddenly, I felt these extreme sexual emotions, almost to the point of ... . In my mind I was trying to react, get it off of me and I was trying to yell for help. But, I couldn’t respond. This may have lasted like a minute? Not sure?

I’m a life long chrisitan, I study, read, pray, go to a great bible church, know and believe in Christ’s vicarious work on the cross, etc. I’m educated, successful (work wise), no drugs, alcohol, etc. I’m older (58) so pretty much don’t even think about sexual things at all. Yes, the training had me exhausted, and not sleeping much. Honestly, I’m a physically strong person, but I felt ... violated. It made me both angry and scared.

What am I supposed to do with this? I’ve been praying a lot since then!! Any thoughts or advice? Was I “attacked” by a succubus?

The devil will try all sorts of things to unsettle us and our faith. All that really matters now is how you deal with it. By that I mean getting on with your life and not worrying about what happened. Remove it from your thoughts, ask God to protect you, and move on.

What you had was a dream, bordering on a nightmare.

Often we go to bed and don't realise that we have fallen asleep, and suddenly, in the dream, we are somehow trapped, and can't get free, and so we start yelling for help, but all we can do is groan, and then we wake up and wonder what that was all about. It can be very unsettling when it happens, because in the dream there is the sense of panic. I have had dreams like that when I dreamed that I was in bed and couldn't move and was yelling for help, believing my parents were in the next room to come and help me. But my parents passed away years ago.

I once had a dream that I woke up in my bed, went out to the head of the stairs and saw a dark entity coming up the stairs, so I was yelling at it in the Name of Jesus! Then I woke up back in my own bed. Another dream I had was when I woke up in my bed, got up to investigate something, went back to bed and thought to myself that this was a dream. Then I woke up, or so I thought, still in my bed and thought that this was strange, and then I actually did wake up. What I was having was a dream within a dream. Crazy eh?

What I do now is that before I go to sleep, I claim the blood of Jesus against nightmares so I don't have any more of the ones that cause me that panic feeling while dreaming.

There's a spiritual explanation and there is also a really cool physiological explanation on youtube somewhere.

All in all, when and if I get stuck in sleep paralysis I pray in the name of Jesus to get me out of it. And Christ usually wakes me up from it. I say, "In the name of Jesus, wake me up lord".

I have various theories about it. I reckon it's a combination of both.

For instance, why is sleep paralysis some kind of shadowy figure lurking around freaking us out or sitting on your chest? The physiological explanation explains why you're body becomes paralysed but why is it a negative experience?

Also, my husband and I experience it at the same time sometimes so that makes me think it could be spiritual.

I also find it occurs when you're really tired or fall asleep too quick or have woken up too many times during the night.

Thank you! You are so right in saying that. Pray, move on, don’t focus on it. Continue to keep my focus and studies in/on the Lord and His blessings in my life.. and on His truth!

That’s quite interesting that you and your husband experience it together .. hmm . Thank you for responding! I thought too that it’s a combination of both, perhaps. I was so so exhausted .. prior days intense training I gotta, with very little to no sleep prior to the incident.

Hi Oscarr,

Thank you for the response. That’s some very good advice! It really made me pray more. Now, before sleep .. I’ll defintely be praying for His protection. Praise Him!

I don't mind the crazy dreams. After one such dream I woke up and said to the Lord, "That was a crazy one! I won't even go there to interpret it!"

The dreams that frustrate me are the ones when just as it gets to the interesting point where the outcome is just about to happen, and then I wake up!

If something like this keeps happening, have them do a sleep study on you. Perhaps you're having trouble breathing and your mind is reacting that way.

I did do a sleep study last year. I awoke in the middle of the night, with all the wires hooked up, and started fighting ... I was dreaming that I was fighting a guy, struggling for a gun, and he shot me in the tummy. They said I defintely needed a cpap machine. But, I never followed up on it.

My wife always wakes me up at night saying I quit breathing.

I suggest checking it out on youtube for a logical explanation of it. It is scary when it does happen.

It's definitely linked to exhaustion. Hope you get some better sleep!

Its your room.. tell it to leave in JESUS name. Read Psa 4 ... verse 8 says In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Greater is He that is in you then he thats in the world. God gave you ALL power over the enemy.

I think you had some bad pizza. Next time warm it up really good before you eat it. And especially while you are in a dorm, never order a pizza with mushrooms.

So jokes aside, I have heard of this. There are no "succubus" things. There are evil spirits and they do stuff like this.

I have heard about 3 very very similar stories to what you just related, people that are not crazy, not on acid, and are trust worthy. So I do believe it happened.

What do you do about it? Nothing. You just pray and ask for protection. That is it. There is nothing else to be done.

Did you happen to be in California, or south africa?

My 27 year old daughter has sleep apnea and she has a sleep machine, and it has made all the difference. It was scary for her partner to have her stop breathing during the night and then gasp for breath before she got the machine. Our District Health Service gave her the machine free of charge.

That is one thing I don't joke about because it happens to my daughter and it is definitely not pleasant at all!

I have experienced that demonic oppression before, where you seem paralyzed. Even if you can't call out verbally you can simply pray to the Lord & ask for help. One time I just thought, 'Help, Lord' & suddenly it was gone.

We tend to be more vulnerable when we are sleeping but you might try as you are going to sleep to put on the full armor of God in Ephesians 6 mentally. Also yield your whole body, soul & mind to the Lord, praying that you would not be led into temptation & be delivered from the evil one.

It appears if you are having struggle dreams, that is often a sign of watching movies that are more violent just before going to bed or dwelling on negative thoughts just before going to bed. You might want to turn on some peaceful Christian worship music & read in the Psalms before going to bed.

If periodic attacks like that happen, sometimes it is because you are fighting spiritual battles in prayer or praying for the lost. The enemy hates that.

I have prayed for you on these things! Bless you in the grace of the Lord!
