Kelly Craft, U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee to become ambassador to the United Nations, was grilled by a U.S. Senate committee Tuesday about why she was absent from her post in Canada more than 300 days over 19 months. Absent 52% of the time. This is an insult to both Canada and the citizens of the U.S.A.

Why does Trump have a habit of appointing unqualified people to important government posts .SMH

Because experience and a fraction of dedication are for losers.

I always thought that Canada understood it’s position and place in the world and did not need the United States Ambassador to ensure they follow our instructions and to babysit them 100% of the time like the unruly countries of the world. Apparently Canada needs more adult supervision.

Why should Canada put up with an unqualified person just because the job isn’t difficult

Part of the job description of an ambassador is to keep your finger on the pulse of the nation to which you were assigned --- political, economic, military, social, etc. I would much rather have a professional in the diplomatic service be an ambassador than one appointed as a political favour.

As sad as it sounds, there is a *loooong* tradition (like, dating back to the early days of the country) of appointing otherwise-unqualified rich people to cushy ambassadorships in nations where there isn't a lot of tension. In fact, there's some argument that being rich is, itself, a qualification since these diplomats are expected to throw a lot of fancy parties that would be unfeasible for anybody living on a typical government salary.

I am aware of that practice. What worries me is that Trump has nominated her for the UN ambassadorship. That post is one of the most important and perhaps the most demanding of any ambassador. Ms. Craft's track record in Canada hardly qualifies her.

No Secretary of Defense after Donald has cranked up tensions in the Middle East, is treating the possibility of war like it's just some cliffhanger for a TV show. Shows up fresh from the tanning bed to give out teasers about it.

No Homeland Security Director
No ICE Director
No Secret Service Director
No Air Force Secretary
No FEMA Director - right at the start of hurricane season, wildfire season
No Communications Director
No White House Chief of Staff

To boot we've got a Secretary of Education who doesn't have a degree in education, doesn't have a lick of experience teaching, has proven to be totally incompetent, but hey she's rich & her brother is a war monger buddy of Donald's. We've got a Secretary of Transportation who has raised deep ethical concerns.

Jeepers. It's almost like a hostile foreign government directly interfered in our election to intentionally cripple our national leadership.

And you have the Loyal Republican Party and all the Republicans in Congress and the Senate to thank for this miracle of politics. It is a great time to be alive!!!!!!!

Golfing at Mar a Lago perhaps?

But I don't think Trump wants to leave the UN. He owns the apartment building across the street where all his buddies from Russia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and other countries led by the dictators he admires live. He probably has campaign donation boxes at the door and rent surcharges to finance his rallies.

It gets better then that. We don't have a Deputy Secretary of Defense, and since the Secretary of the Army is Acting Secretary of Defense, we don't have a Secretary of the Army. ANd that's just Defense. We also don't have a Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, a Undersecretary for National Protection and Program, a Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, a US Ambassador to Mexico, DEA Administrator, and who knows what else. And these are positions that haven't even had nominations made yet, so you can't blame Democrats for stonewalling.

Lmbo. The article is from 1993. 1993 folks. 1993. It's also important to note that it's from summer of 1993, when President Clinton had only been in office for less than half a year. Your article is sympathetic towards President Clinton, points out that it's not unusual for there to be so many unfilled positions at that stage of an administration. Donald has been in office for two and a half years. Also important to note that President Clinton still had filled more roles at that stage in his administration than Donald midway through his. Great article to highlight the level of incompetence we are seeing in this administration. Also important to note that some ambassadorships are a heck of a lot more crucial than others.

MAPPED: THE ABSENT AMBASSADORS
Khashoggi ordeal spotlights staffing gap at embassies around the world.

Now if it were only a matter of Donald's incompetence with ambassador appointees, that'd be one thing, but numerous vital positions are only filled in an acting capacity. To boot he's picked incredibly unqualified folks for vital positions, like Betsy DeVos.

Are those paid for personally by the ambassador? I always just assumed it was considered a diplomatic expense.
