Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal
The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.

Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.

The centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s deal was an expansion of a program to allow asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their legal cases proceed. But that arrangement was first reached in December in a pair of painstakingly negotiated diplomatic notes that the two countries exchanged. Ms. Nielsen announced the Migrant Protection Protocols during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee five days before Christmas.

And over the past week, negotiators failed to persuade Mexico to accept a “safe third country” treaty that would have given the United States the legal ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not sought refuge in Mexico first.

I thought I had read this had already happened. This was because all the facilities to hold them on this side of the border were full and the courts couldn't keep up with those being held.

Maybe this time Mexico will actually do it.
Mexico did not agree to this.....

I don't know your sources, but in following the President's Tweets, Mexico talked the talk but did not walk the walk. The threat of tariffs may have gotten the Mexican President to move into action. We have been inundated all year and past years with illegals entering from that border. None of it was stopped by Mexico either at their southern border or within their own country. This made Mexico one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Now time will tell if Mexico takes action to stop the illegals or not. Our stupid federal judges and the even more ridiculous obedience to their decisions should be considered out of their jurisdiction because the Constitution clearly allows President Trump to build the wall, even freeze all immigration, legal or otherwise until he deems it OK to allow controlled, legal immigration. Clinton did it and for good reason. Further, some wall was already built before Trump took office, but had since decayed, and Trump is having those walls repaired and updated. He is the only president who has been serious about stopping illegals from entering the country and rousting out the ones already here. I personally am behind him 100%.

Either way Trump got er' done.
Actually, I see this as a perfect example of something my dad used to say: "After everything has been said and done? There's always way more said, then done.".
tulc(thinks that could well be the slogan for this administration) :)

tulc(thinks that sounds fair) :)
Will his winning the next election, despite all the ridiculous negativity and childish insults thrown at him, do it for you?

uhmmm...his negativity and childish insults is how he gathered and now keeps a large portion of his base happy, so making it sound like that's a bad thing is actually pretty ironic. :sorry:
tulc(thinks "ridiculous negativity and childish insults" could well be this administrations other slogan) :D

No you wont.
Finally! It's always nice to find something we both can agree about! So...you don't think he'll ever do anything he can get credit for either?

Nice deflection. I guess that's a 'no' to my question.

Not really a deflection, more of an observation of the massive amount of irony of someone apparently defending President Trump by accusing people of using "ridiculous negativity and childish insults" about a man who's whole political career was/is built on both of those things, but if you'd like to discuss "ridiculous negativity and childish insults" you really should start a thread about that, I'm pretty certain it would be...interesting.
tulc(would honestly love to see what happens) ;)

If it troubles you that much, I can drop the "ridiculous negativity and childish insults" part of the question. I'm thinking your answer would still be 'no.'
so your question would then be:
Will his winning the next election, (snip) , do it for you?
And to be honest I would be disappointed (but not shocked) if he wins reelection. I've been a Democrat for may years now, I've seen us pull defeat out of the very jaws of victory too often to be shocked or impressed by it happening again. I will say this though: if it does happen? I will "gird up my loins" and go right back to pointing out the things I disagree with. :)
