America is actually pretty great at getting developing/third world countries to capitulate to their demands/desires.

Good on you for that! I bet you all feel pretty strong and mighty!

Yes, like the U.S. government giving weapons to terrorists when it suited this country's interest in another nation or the U.S. government directly interfering in the elections of other nations.

The long history of the U.S. interfering with elections elsewhere

The U.S. Needs to Face Up to Its Long History of Election Meddling

The U.S. is no stranger to interfering in the elections of other countries

Can't read the full article due to the paywall, so I'm curious about the specifics.

Credit to Donald for not having to carry out his threat this time.
I wonder in what chapter of Art of the Deal we'd find strong arm tactics as a way to have leverage in negotiations.

All of them, most likely.

Donald knows one trick, and to his credit, it's worked pretty well for him... and as long as his base worships his "backbone," he has no need to learn any others.

I don't think 'capitulate' is the right word.

Trump drops tariff threat against Mexico, saying immigration will be reduced

The State Department said in a statement that Mexico agreed to deploy its national guard throughout that country "giving priority to its southern border."

The department also announced Friday the U.S. would expand its "migrant protection protocols" that requires migrants seeking asylum in the United States to stay in Mexico until their cases are processed.

It said Mexico would authorize people to enter for humanitarian reasons "while they await the adjudication of their asylum claims.".......

Trump had been under intense pressure from business leaders and members of his own party to suspend the tariffs, which economists warned could have raised prices on thousands of goods imported from Mexico. Momentum had been growing among Republicans in the Senate to override any emergency declaration Trump might sign implementing the tariffs, which he said a few days ago would have grown every few weeks until they reached 25 percent......

The agreement came after the two sides met for a third straight day on Friday. An unexpectedly low growth in the May jobs numbers, announced Friday morning, may have increased pressure on the White House not to add any more hurdles to the economy.

They have been resisting for how long? And now have ceased to resist an opponent

Sounds like the right word to me.

Canada had that problem a little over 200 years ago. They didn't listen to reason so we had to shoot them. It took a couple of years but they finally got the message and we haven't had that problem since.;)

Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal

WASHINGTON — The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.
Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.
The centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s deal was an expansion of a program to allow asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their legal cases proceed. But that arrangement was reached in December in a pair of painstakingly negotiated diplomatic notes that the two countries exchanged. Ms. Nielsen announced the Migrant Protection Protocols during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee five days before Christmas.
And over the past week, negotiators failed to persuade Mexico to accept a “safe third country” treaty that would have given the United States the legal ability to reject asylum seekers if they had not sought refuge in Mexico first.

The violent tyranny and crime seen in those countries seems to be part of their DNA, for what's it's worth.

Don't kid yourself. It's in your DNA too.

Reduced trust in US agreements.
A move towards excluding the US in trade negotiations.
Other countries being willing to flex their economic muscle in areas that the US can't counter

Not to mention the likelihood of worsening the humanitarian crises in south America.

All moot, as we now know the threat was empty, and Mexico wasn't doing anything they hadn't already planned to do.

This is a pattern in Donald's behavior -- he only talks tough when the fix is already in.

No, the last thing we want is Mexico to be part of the US. Part of the problem is the rights imposed in our laws. To stop refugees, we need a country that doesn't have the press looking over them demanding that people be treated humanely.

The US isn't alone in this. Europe has taken somewhat of the same approach, pressuring countries like Turkey and Libya to stop the flow.

I agree, however, that looking at the borders it should be a lot easier for Mexico than the US. But we need to find a way to improve conditions in places like Honduras. I'm aware that this is a hard problem.

American evangelicals have actually made the social and political conditions in many of those countries worse by supporting illiberal social policies in those countries. In many ways, the Protestant influence in Latin America has been even more socially corrosive than the Catholic Church with its notorious history of supporting the wealthy against the interests of the poor.
