They should encourage cat ownership or feral cats. In South Africa, many of the old hospitals have resident populations of feral cats on their grounds, that had been released back in the day to control rats.

Apparently not - at least not in New York. According to the Smithsonian, cats are pretty useless when it comes to controlling the rat population.

Feral cats also have a major disadvantage. They tend to prey on birds and small mammals along with smaller lizards and snakes. This means that they are a direct threat to native populations.

As an ex small landowner I know that the best thing you can do with feral cats is shoot them - regularly.

"One key reason rats seem to be everywhere? Gentrification."

I know some of the traditional residents may be biased against the rats moving in, but it really does help the tax base to have successful rats in your area.

Rats and city managers have an agreement. The rats will plague the residents while the city will extract as much taxes as they can to solve the problem...while not solving the problem. It a win/win for the rats and the city coffers.

A famous deer hunter revealed that early in his hunting career he met with failure year after year, as the deer had always "outsmarted" him. Then he had an awakening. "Waitaminute", deer are dumb animals. How can they be smarter than a human." From the time forward he became one of the most successful deer hunters in America...by simply outsmarting the deer.

Perhaps these cities fail because they actually believe that rats are "smart". Rats aren't smart. They're dumb 'freaking' rodents.

Perhaps New York and other rat infested cities should consult with this guy.
