It's kind of the same "logic" as Mexico paying for the wall, except for now it's China paying the tariffs. :)
So two years from now ppl will still think China is going to pay...

In "Trumpworld," supporters don't hold this President subject to the same fact checking upon which the rest of us are judged - as a cult leader they don't even recognize that he should operate within the accepted constrains of the Constitution!

If one is opposed to tariffs because they raise consumer costs one should be opposed to sales taxes , excise taxes and corporate income taxes as well. All taxes on any phase of production will raise the cost of consumer goods. The issue is not whether costs will rise due to taxes, that is a given, the issue is whether the results of the taxation are a net positive. If tariffs accomplish what they are intended to accomplish they will have be worth the extra expense, if they do not accomplish what they are intended to accomplish they will be a failure and not have been worth it.

Yes, like 20 cents per pay check, I can handle this.
$800 / ($.20 / paycheck) = ?

I'm thinking this math doesn't exactly work out. Looks like evidence that the answer to the OP's questions is no.

Fair enough, it is an average.
But I'd be curious to see a detailed accounting of how much Donald is costing you in this instance.

Nothing, out from my taxes, nothing has changed.

Probably out of the rich pockets i assume.

Personally, I’m not opposed to measures that incentivize buying American, and discourage buying goods from China.

But did Trump supporters know and understand that they would be paying more for imports due to his trade policies, or did they think China was going to pay the tariffs?

Trump's China tariffs could slam American shoppers with an extra $800 in costs a year | Markets Insider

I'm certain that everyone knows how tariffs work. They increase prices on imports to deter people from buying them. A person can choose to pay the increased price or look somewhere else.

In the alternative, maybe we should be content with buying cheap goods from China all the while allowing China to place tariffs on American made products to deter the Chinese from buying American.

Chuck Schumer even supports Trump's stance on China for their theft of intellectual property. And he should support him because he represents New York, one of the global centers for intellectual property.

Should Trump supporters, or any American for that matter, support Trump's policies toward China? It is not fallacious to say that we can be on the side of the United States in this or we can be on the side of China. Trump is fighting for fair trade between the US and China. China wants unfair trade that benefits China at the expense of the United States.

It's not like this is the new normal either. China will probably want to settle very quickly. Their economy is not in good shape at all, and is vulnerable to collapse. This was a massive miscalculation by them. Meanwhile Trump made a point to visit South Korea, Vietnam, Japan and India on his East Asian trip, to strengthen trade ties.

7% of Americans think chocolate milk comes from brown cows... never put too much faith in the populous.

I agree, but I’m not sure that Trump supporters understood that they would be paying the tariffs. I think they thought that China paid the tariffs.

I’m guessing you didn’t read the article. The cost of many goods from China will go up due to the tariffs. For instance, most clothes and shoes sold in the U.S. come from China. The estimate is that the average family will see an $800/ year increase in expenses. The increase goes into effect Friday so you wouldn’t have seen it yet.

I have long been in support of measures to reduce the consumption of Chinese goods. I don’t shop at Walmart and I try to avoid shoes and clothes made there (it’s difficult though!)

I’m at a loss as to why Trump makes his own clothing in China and has not attempted any kind of “buy American” campaign, if he truly wants to reduce our dependence on Chinese goods and increase manufacturing in the U.S.
