Amid a deepening trade war with China, President Trump on Wednesday declared a “national emergency” to protect U.S. communications networks in a move that gives the federal government broad powers to bar American companies from doing business with certain foreign suppliers — including the Chinese firm Huawei.

The order authorizes the commerce secretary to block transactions involving communications technologies built by firms controlled by a foreign adversary that puts U.S. security at “unacceptable” risk

No companies or countries are listed by name, but it doesn't take much to see that this is aimed at China.

One of the many problems with Donald is that he is so untrustworthy that it is impossible to tell what might be real and what is more bluster and folly.

This makes a lot more sense than his last national emergency to steal wall money from the military budget.

We won’t be worried about the Government using its Powers to curtail free speech in a few weeks when the “enemy of the people” is fixated on the War in Iran!

Having a trade war and a “shootin’ war” at the same time, with different countries, might be a FIRST that Trump might like to avoid?

I wonder how the Conservisphere would have reacted if President Obama was declaring national emergencies willy nilly.

Regular shiny, jingly things aren’t going to distract the hoi polloi anymore.
The President needs YUGE shiny, jingly things now.

Just so long as they are not shiny things that go boom.

I do agree that it would be awesomely stupid to allow Huawei to establish the nation's entire 5g network.

If the Chinese don't already have STUXNET-like worms hidden in most of the electronics of the world, they're not as smart as I think they are.

I'd say more like software to spy or even create a botnet more than one to disable the phone.

"Willy nilly" is in the eyes of the beholder. Trump has declared 5; one was very controversial.

Obama declared 12.

List of national emergencies in the United States - Wikipedia

I suppose that the administration could have failed to address this issue, and waited for Congress (a rather useless approach, as Obama found). It seems that it is simply a knee-jerk reaction to oppose this Trump action. We need to act against China, and their cyber threat.

The fact that Trump continues to ignore similar threats from Russia and North Korea is indeed hypocritical. That does NOT make this effort wrong or misguided.

I wonder how the Conservisphere would have reacted if President Obama was declaring national emergencies willy nilly.
