If you've ever been near a US military base, you may hear "BAH" brought up. This is "Basic Allowance For Housing".

BAH is what military service members get as an allowance separate from their pay in order to pay for housing if they choose to live "on the economy" (that is, in the nearby community rather than in on-base housing).

For example, by the calculator, an O-2 (2nd Lieutenant, US Army) who chooses to live in Copperas Cove, Texas rather than on-base at Ft. Hood would receive an additional $12,888 / year to pay for housing if they're single or $13,680 / year to pay for housing if they're married. That boils down to $1,074 month if single or $1,140 if married

Here in this part of Central Texas, land is cheap. $1,000 / month? You're in a nice home, usually a higher-end place that is either fairly new or newly-remodeled.

Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

...Until you realize that Salt Lake City's pretty expensive. It's not "New York City expensive" or "Los Angeles" expensive, but you're in for some sticker shock compared to a place like Central Texas.

This is what $10,000 / month will get you in Salt Lake City, assuming you pretty much *only* use it for rent ->

You're basically paying 10 times as much in SLC for what you could get here in Central Texas.

That BAH calculator? I re-ran it with 84101 as the Zip code -> one of the *many* zip codes assigned to Salt Lake City, and it tacked on another $5K / year.

Not that I am aware of. That being said, the topic of this thread is:
Mormons have the highest paid clergy
I don't believe that for a minute. No one in positions in my ward or stake are getting paid by the church except some of those who need welfare assistance or those being supported on missions. Even then most of the missionaries support themselves on money they and/or their parents have saved. Most of us have regular jobs and support ourselves and our families from that income.

If he does get something from the church's business ventures it is most likely less than he could be making as a medical board member. He might not be taking anything.

Sounds like your painting a picture of misinformation since the Mormon hierarchy is getting opulent wages with chauffeur driven limousines, body guards, and lavish housings . That why a BYU professor and her children left the LDS religion and her children authored this song

He's getting allowances and a stipend, much of which is going right back out the door for things like withholding (both state and federal) and insurance (that "24Hr AD&D" entry? That's an accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy).

Again, what these individuals are getting is fair and reasonable given local cost of living.

If anything, it's far more well-known than you might think. It's also very often a meager sum compared to what they could have made had they stayed in their previous profession, especially when you're looking at people like Elder Uchtdorf who was a corporate vice president.

Limos? That's standard for just about anyone of high-level authority.

Body guards? Maybe if people weren't trying to kill us all the time...

And so on.

As it is, they represent a small fraction of the overall clergy within the church, the vast majority of whom operate as lay ministers and balance day jobs on top of what they do.

You go to an average LDS congregation, and the head honcho could be a helicopter pilot, teacher, military officer, doctor, firefighter, et cetra. They're not in it for the money.
