Far too often pro-lifers claim the only medical reason to abort a pregnancy is a life-threatening condition affecting the mother that can't be treated ina way that saves the fetus. This is 100% false. No matter what, medical reasons for abortions go beyond the maternal emergencies and pregnancy-related conditions that only kill the mother and problems that can kill both of them. Maybe you do not call these abortions, but the result is the same - living mom and dead fetus. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

What would you consider to be a valid medical reason to seek abortion?

The mother and doctor know her baby will be be born dead anyway.
The baby is diagnosed with a problem that kills babies shortly after birth.

Isn't this pre-emptive infanticide? How does the doctor know with certainty?

What about Grandpa? We know he is sick and weeks or even days from death. Do we just put the pillow over grandpa's face and say "well you are going to die, better if we get it done before that happens...??"

Grandpa was not quite dead yet.

Most oncologists don't even give "Months or weeks left" to terminally ill patients anymore. Why? Because some have 'beaten the odds.'

Psalm 127: NASB

1Unless the LORD builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the LORD guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.

2It is vain for you to rise up early,
To retire late,
To eat the bread of painful labors;
For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

3Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.

4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.

5How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

The difference between Baby and Grandpa is Baby will have no life outside the neonatial ICU its entire life and Grandpar has already lived a full life before getting sick. Obviosuly it is possible for a baby to beat all odds, but it can depend on the diagnosis. Some problems kill babies the same day or week.

BTW I also started an "assisted death" threed for people who want to debate the Grandpa issue.

Because Grandpa had a 'full life' he is considered morally superior to the baby?

Here is one you might find more acceptable: The mother has cancer and can't live without chemotherapy, which is passed to the fetus through the placenta and umbilical cord. UCs have two arteries and one vein. In this situation, the mother must choose between her own life or the baby's life. It is a no-brainer.

A most difficult situation. If the mother does not do the chemo she dies and the child dies. If she does the chemo, she may live and the child may live.

If Mom does chemo, she can live and make Baby die as a consequence.

No, I am saying it is morally better not to wait nine months for a baby to live that many days.
How would a doctor know 9 months in advance a child would not survive days after birth? Something tells me the child would die in the womb much earlier if there were serious defects or complications.

That's a possibility. But not certain. If she does nothing then she dies and the child dies. Your situational ethics are frankly situationally dependent. If a woman is diagnosed with cancer in early stages of cancer she can have surgery and chemo can be delayed. If she is say 7 months pregnant and is diagnosed there are many more options to birth the baby earlier to save mother and child.

I know this is a difficult situation. A pastor friend's daughter faced this and opted not to do harm to her child. She lived three months to see the child born healthy. Her cancer was far advanced when diagnosed and the likely outcome would have been her child poisoned to death or born with defects due to the treatments, and she would live maybe a year with intensive chemo treatments. She valued the life of her daughter and would do no harm to her.

I was referring to any time in her pregnancy, which if abortion is illegal adds up to the full 9 months.
Go back to pre-Roe v Wade state laws and let me know if any states denied pregnant women medical treatments to save their lives.

We can throw out there all the situational ethics there is and run down every possible scenario, but the truth of the matter is over 97% of abortions involve a healthy woman and a healthy fetus.

Surgery is not an option for all cancer types. Additionally, cancer may not have symptoms until it is stage 4 and by that time the wmoan could be pregnant. Then it may be too late to operate. so it is not always a black and white treatment plan.

I am trying to point out sometimes it is not the mother, but the fetus, whose life is in danger, so she may carry a dead baby inside her if not allowed to terminate the pregnancy early.

That does not make sense. No one is made to carry a stillborn.
