Renowned philosopher signs petition calling on bishops to investigate Pope for heresy

May 6, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – World-renowned Catholic philosopher Dr. Josef Seifert has signed a petition calling on the bishops of the world to “investigate Pope Francis for heresy.”

The petition was launched by one of the signers of the April 30 Open Letter to Bishops where 19 prominent clergymen and scholars accused Pope Francis of committing heresy and asked the bishops of the Catholic Church, to whom the open letter is addressed, to "take the steps necessary to deal with the grave situation" of a pope committing this crime.

Seifert, president of the new laity-led Academy for Life and close friend of the late Pope St. John Paul II, defended signing the petition in a written statement provided to LifeSiteNews (see full statement below).

What do you think of all of this? Is it a surprise to you or expected?

Here's more from some people I deeply respect saying this should not be brushed aside:
WATCH: Ignatius Press bosses suggest Rome reply to open letter accusing Francis of heresy
The MSM is brushing this aside as “extremists.”

Reuters dismisses ‘extremists’ who accused Pope Francis of heresy

I’m sure the powers that be will marginalize all who sign.

Now I will read your link.

The MSM is brushing this aside as “extremists.”
And likely the Vatican is considering them as extremists too, but planning on totally ignoring it.
I’m sure the powers that be will marginalize all who sign.
I expect the signers will likely lose their jobs. So signing this an act of utter frustration. Thing is, for the most part none of this is brand new and pope Francis could have avoided ALL of this by answering the questions asked of him a couple of years ago. Those are known as 'The Dubia', posed by four cardinals who had questions about 'Amoris Letitia'

If the investigation is performed even remotely similar to the July 2016 DOJ Clinton hearing, the fix is in, we already know the outcome.

The basic issue really comes down to whether one can divorce and remarry if they were initially validly married. Catholic teaching simply and consistently says 'no' but pope Francis isn't very clear on that. He has absolutely refused to clarify. But it's grown since then because of new things pope Francis has said and done and who he has appointed.

I followed the link and two links IN the link and still don’t know what the “heresies” are. They refer to sexual sins - is this regarding the Pope’s protection of child molesters and sexual abusers?

If the Pope is infallible, then it seems like those acting in opposition to him would be in the wrong by default. Seems it would thus be impossible for a Pope to commit a heresy.

Why neither the Pope, nor the body of Bishops, can commit heresy
Reading the letter (see link at post 2), they address various statements of the Pope which are in tension with previous still standing infallible council or prior Popes teachings.

A sitting Pope as far as I know cannot “trump” or change previous infallible teachings.

I’ll defer to @chevyontheriver for this.
