I am going through rough times, and often get responses with what I should pray for. Things like strength to get through the situation, patience, etc. If I am truly honest, I don't want any of that. My heart's desire is for the painful situations to be removed. If I prayed for those things, I would be lying to God about what I want. I don't care what possible good could be gotten out of the problems. I no longer care what God wants to accomplish. I don't want his comfort. I just want them gone. So should I follow the advice and pray for what I don't want at all, for any reason, or stick with the more honest, but more selfish prayer?

Why not just pray for God's will to be done? (Part of the Lord's Prayer). That way you can kill two birds with one stone...you won't be lying and it won't be selfish.

"I no longer care what God wants to accomplish."

It's not about your will, it is about His will

Matthew 6

9So then, this is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
10Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us this day our daily bread.
12And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

1 John 5:14

This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

Psalm 42:11, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

When was the last time you praised Him?

In the midst of what you’re facing, find simple things for which to praise God. I don’t mean thank Him for the hard stuff. I mean thank Him for the simple, good things while still in the midst of turmoils.

May the Lord bring you peace in your heart and draw you nearer to Him. Amen.

Pray for what you want.
The only problem is that there are 3 possible answers:
Yes
No
Later

I pray for what I want. If there's no alternative then I pray for strength -- which we always need.

God and You have a relationship. Why ask others what you're to pray for? Do you ask others what you should speak to your wife/husband about?

Same thing.
God hears your prayers, whatever they are.

Life can be ugly and corrupt. The Lord gave us emotions and sometimes they can be very ugly. Yet this is how we feel when we are in pain. You are not alone, here is an instance from scripture.

Israel as a nation was judged. Their country was crushed and the survivors were forced to live in distance lands to their home. You can feel the bitterness of their pain. Remind you this is a Psalm in the Holy Scriptures. (Edomites are a nation that come from Jacob's brother Esau)

Psalm 137 ESV

"By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

4 How shall we sing the Lord's song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget its skill!
6 Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
above my highest joy!

7 Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites
the day of Jerusalem,
how they said, “Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”
8 O daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed,
blessed shall he be who repays you
with what you have done to us!
9 Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones
and dashes them against the rock!"

Babylon was the conquering nation, it is their "little ones" the psalmist wants to see dashed against the rock. A really ugly request.

I wanted to share this with you to let you know that it is OK to be sincere with God about how you feel. All honestly God already knows.

Remember that "Vengeance is mine.." (Deuteronomy 32:35) says the Lord. Don't take matters into your own hands. Pray that God will work it out for you.

Just remember one thing, that Christ(Jesus the anointed one) was rejected, humiliated, despised, abandoned, and even put to death. He knows how you feel more than you know. Sometimes he will use the pain to teach you how to have compassion for others. When the time is right, he may ask you to learn to forgive your enemies. So you can be truly free of them.

If you believe that God knows you by heart, why do you think of being not honest to him? Pray for what you feel that you NEED.

God knows what you really want so you are only deceiving yourself if you ask for what you think you should want. Be honest with God and tell him your real desires. Being honest and forsaking any kind of pretense will open you up so that he can communicate with him. Perhaps he will change you so that you want the right things.

God's will...

Apparently, God's will is for me to suffer through this for his purposes. So praying for God's will IS the lying prayer I am talking about. I want the problems to end.

My problems are not with other people. Most of the people around my range from good to great. The problems I am having are health (my wife's), financial (and not like a bad boss, but partially due to the health issues), and generally bad situations which are not anyone's fault. The situations require more than earthly power to resolve.

Perhaps he will change you so that you want the right things.

That is the crux of the forum thread's issue. The idea that what I want is wrong (implied by your statement). I cannot bring myself to care about spiritual issues while my material situation is bad. In fact in looking at them, the reward is entirely inadequate to the pain needed to get them. The example usually given is one praying for patience, so God sends people that try your patience. I don't want the spiritual. I NEED the material situation fixed before I can even think about wanting spiritual things.

"Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

Not very long ago, I realized that verse is connected to this one:

This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain." -- Hebrews 8

It is done in Heaven. God's will for my tomorrow already exists as a pattern in heaven, a thing already done in the mind of God. It is my job--as it was Moses'--to make my reality conform with the pattern that already exists in heaven.

I think Jesus was shown in His prayers every night what was in the Father's mind--what had been done in Heaven-- for Jesus' next day:

Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." -- John 5

And then Jesus got up the next day and made it happen as He had been shown.

So my ideal prayer (when I can manage to truly mean it single-mindedly, and being single-minded is exceedingly difficult)--is: "Lord, show me Your mind for my tomorrow, and I will make it so."

If you place your will above God's He might give you what you ask for but it might come with even more difficulties for you. It's better you accept His will which is far easier for you to handle because He'll never place upon you something He knows you can't handle.

.

If this is the case, God has WAY too much confidence in me. I can't handle this. I am rapidly losing any semblance of faith in him. i am pretty much only talking to him at all because A) he is the only one who can help and B) I don't want to go to Hell. Every prayer answered with the obvious, "No.", I lose a little more faith in A.

Yeah, I think a lying prayer is worse. Let's get down to the brass tacks of what prayer really is: our relationship with God. You're not being real with God--even though you already know full and well He knows the truth. If you are real with God and you are sincerely selfish, God can work with that. If not, then God will work with what little you have given Him: that at least you are praying to Him at all.

Maybe you're too worried about going to hell.

That is possible, you know. And it makes a person despair who has no reason to despair.

It's like a soldier in combat who is more concerned about missing the plane home after the war than he's worried about the combat patrol for today, when his commander has already assured him that a seat will be waiting for him.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

If you want to catch that last plane out, accomplish your assignment for today.

And then for tomorrow.

And then for the day after that.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Pray, then, for what you need to complete today's assignment. The plane home will have a seat with your name on it...when your part in the war is completed.

I think it's ok to pray for both.

You're being both honest, and hopeful, then.

God has answered many, many of my prayers with a "No". Even ones that seemed really, really good and reasonable to me.

I still follow Christ. It is not always easy, but He is worth it. And He is God, too.

Wow you have the wrong military analogy. No, I am the guy that got convinced he had to be in the army. So he goes to the recruiter and they tell him he can have whatever position he wants. The literature backs that up. So he signs up and goes to basic training. He puts in for a position at the most secure base with the most intense security (absolutely as far from the fight as he can get) After he's done they hand him a rifle and send him to the front. When he protests, they point to his contract where the fine print says that the "pick what you want" part says yoU WILL want the orders they give you. Now I am looking for any way away from the fight.

I didn't sign up to go through this. I signed up to not go to Hell.

No, you don't understand.

The battle is not hell, going into the battle is the reason for joining.

Hell is not having joined the army and being left behind when the army returns home.

What part of "pick up your cross" sounds like the Christian life is supposed to be easy?

So how do you reconcile that (pick up your cross) with the "give you your heart's desire" part, since my heart's desire is to under no circumstances whatsoever have a cross to bear? I want God to take anything that could remotely considered a cross to bear, stand next to me, and throw it so far away He can't see where it lands.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. -- Matthew 6

Contrary to popular opinion, God will only grant you those desires that support propagation of His kingdom. If you make His desire your desire, then you get your desire met.

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your own pleasures. -- James 4

This is kind of like when I was active duty. I could request anything from the commander...as long as it was of benefit to his mission, not my own desires.

If I made my own desire to complete the mission, then my own desires were also met.
