No, Israel is one of the few countries that is one of our allies in the Middle East, one of the few liberal democracies there, and they need all the support they can get.

This does not mean we should blindly support everything they do—we shouldn't, and I don't, especially not Netanyahu's radical plan to annex more of the West Bank, which will virtually destroy any chance of a two-state solution.

But, we should generally support their right to self-defense against the religious fundamentalist Islamic extremists surrounding them.

Free handouts of U.S. taxpayer money is a load of hooey. If people truly believe Israel is such an "ally", they can set up a GoFundMe page to help them purchase shiny new F-16's to go and sonic-boom terrorize the Gazans with. And if they're such a God-ordained country, then let God protect them--not the IRS.

Hi MM,

I'm certainly all for supporting Israel based on who they are as regards not only an ally and intelligence source, but also who they have always been before God. However, having said that, I don't find any problem, as the General discusses, having debate from time to time on the merits and necessity and amount of aid that we give them.

Israel has always been a strong ally to us and I've always been for providing necessary support for allies just as much as I would hope that they might offer support to us, if needed. However, we're in a position surrounded by friendly neighbors and we have the largest pool of military power and money of any other nation on the earth, and so our needing assistance is generally rare, except for perhaps in times of natural disasters.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

Hi again MM,

I must admit that I wasn't particularly aware of AOC's words and so I took a look. It seems that she hasn't actually made any proposal to cut aid, but merely made the statement that such a thing would be 'on the table' if it were decided that Israel was not acting in line with American values and desires in the area.

It seems that she is for the two state option. So, her understanding of what Israel's position would be as being 'in line with American values' is likely different for her than others who don't agree with giving the Palestinians any of Israel's land.

While I am not real big on eschatology and Israel's role in prophecy, I see Israel as a good ally. And anyone who the moslems don't like is my friend.

Israel is our only friend in that area of the world.
We even have helped enemies --- why not friends??

Maybe because they are taking the homes and lives of Palestinian Christians as well? Make no mistake the current Israeli regime is only interested in one thing, Israeli supremacy. I know many Christian Refugees from that region who have a hard time forgiving Israel for its actions against them. There are many Jews in Israel who stand against the racism of the current government.

We're in the politics section....
God is not here for me.
Israel wants supremacy??
What do the Palestianians want?
Why do they keep bombarding Israel?

Why has Israel been able to make progress and they haven't? Why do some of "them" (the palestinians) go to work in Israel and not in their own territory?
Why are there no jobs in their own home territory?
Maybe they could move to Jordan or some other place that would welcome them.

No. They'd like to push Israel into the sea. I heard this 40 years ago and I'm hearing it still to this day.
Kill the Israelis....

Want to know what I think? They should have followed God's rules from Joshua's time. They should have driven out all the palestinians when they had the chance back in 47.

Hi BTS,

You responded:

Just to offer another understanding, I don't see this as a show of 'Israeli Supremacy'. Israel is a nation that started off with more land than she has now and would like to reassert her sovereignty over what is admittedly disputed land areas. Israel has never really show themselves to be some kind of supreme nation, but with their borders as they are, Israel does sit in a rather precarious position as regards her own defense. I'm quite sure that if the roles were reversed and the land now know as Israel were the U.S., we'd want to be able to sleep at peace at night also with a more defensible position since we would be surrounded by some much larger enemy nations.

It isn't like Israel, unlike Germany, is trying to take over the whole of the middle east or even a single other established nation.

As to taking the homes and lives of 'Palestinian christians'. It's not like they send people out door to door to take a census of each families faith. They just want the land back that they believe, and yes I understand that it is a disputed area, was their land. It doesn't matter to them what the faith of the people living on that land is. Just like when the U.S. goes in and carpet bombs a city or drops nuclear weapons, those weapons don't knock on each door to find out the faith of the person living or working in the home or building before they destroy the lives and property that they will destroy.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

You did not see the USS Liberty get attacked? You did not see Israel surprise attack pretty much all their unsuspecting neighbors in 1967?

Let's see some proof?

Hi expat,

Well, there's more to that story than what most see on the surface. The U.S. was attempting to assert it's authority where it really had no right to do so and Israel bit their hand.

Hi expat,

Here you go: USS Liberty incident - Wikipedia

The USS Liberty was too close to the action and had been ordered further away by the U.S. Naval command, but due to radio difficulties, never got the message. According to an inquiry by both the U.S. and Israel, separate inquiries, it was determined that Israel had not been made aware of the USS Liberty's position even though Israel had asked to be notified of American ship positions. It was then determined by both nations that the incident was accidental and Israel made repatriations for the deaths and injury and damages.

Me, I'm the kind of person that allows that people make mistakes. Some are, of course, more costly than others, but mistakes nonetheless. The USS Liberty was too close to an active war arena and had not made its position known to Israeli forces. Of course, I'm also one to see and understand the utter death, destruction and devastation caused by the dropping of two nuclear bombs over two cities of pretty much non-combatants in Japan and understand that we aren't always righteous in the things that we do in times of war either.

For me, I'm able to see and believe that Israeli forces in times of war made a bad call. Now it's time to get over it. I also don't see why these two incidents 50 years ago should have any real bearing on our desire or ability to give aid today to a nation that is our ally.

You may not know it, but there was a time that Russia was our ally!!!

God bless,
In Christ, ted

As I said in my original post, I believe that the radical Israeli settlers who are harassing and even carrying out acts of violence against the Palestinians are harming the peace process, and I don't support the indiscriminate bulldozing of homes, dropping of shells on apartments, or Netanyahu's plan to annex West Bank land to appease his extreme, Jewish right-wing supporters.

Absolutely, we should oppose that.
