72 hours makes it impossible for Jesus to have risen "on the third day". It is you who is calling Jesus a liar.
It cannot be proved that it was exactly 72 hours. Jesus never said it. He said, "Three days and three nights" It is ridiculous to say that it was actually 72 hours because Jesus died at 3pm on the Thursday, and we don't know exactly when He rose from the dead after the third night. But three days and three nights has to establish His death on the Thursday afternoon, which counting forward to Sunday morning, there are definitely three days and three nights. It is quite definite that the Thursday is counted as a whole day, even though it was less than 24 hours. If we are counting Saturday night as one of the nights, then He would have had to come out of the tomb at sunrise on Sunday morning.

It doesn't have to be 72 hours, my post was in reply to someone who said it was. But you still cannot have Jesus dead for 3 days and 3 nights AND rise ON the 3rd day.

It doesn't have to be 72 hours, my post was in reply to someone who said it was. But you still cannot have Jesus dead for 3 days and 3 nights AND rise ON the 3rd day.

Pastor Doug: No. When Jesus said the prince of this world comes, He was speaking of the devil. When Jesus said as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish or the whale, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, He wasn't talking about the tomb or vault. He was talking about the heart of the earth meaning the clutches of the world.

You see, every time the mob tried to destroy Jesus or stone Jesus or throw Him off a cliff through His whole Ministry, He was untouchable. He walked right through their midst, He disappeared, He became invisible they never were able to harm Him in any way because He was under His Father's protection. But in the Garden of Gethsemane Thursday night when He said quite specifically, 'Now is the hour of darkness...' then the mob came. They tied Him up, they beat Him, and He began suffering for the sins of the world.

See He didn't start suffering for the sins of the world when He was on the Cross and the nails pierced His flesh. The suffering began in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He was taken from place to place and beaten and mobbed. He went from Pilate to Herod and back to Pilate again. He went from Caiaphas to Anna and back to Caiaphas and - He was just drug all over the place during that period - and being mocked and whipped and thorns on His head and, He was suffering for the sins of the world. He was a captive to the devil the same way Jonah went wherever the whale went. See Jonah was a captive to the whale. He was in that dark, hopeless environment for three days and three nights the same way that Jesus was in the clutches of the world, the clutches of the lost world, for three days and three nights.

Caller: Ohh.

Pastor Doug: When He prayed the third time, 'Not my will Thy will be done', and He said to His disciples you can sleep on because now is the hour of darkness - He made it very clear - this is the starting point. The mob came. He told Peter put away your sword this is why I came into the world. From Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night He was taking the penalty for our sins, which is punishment and death, not just death - punishment and death. And He suffered and He died, starting Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday. So that's the crux of that misunderstanding. It has nothing to do with the tomb.

You are correct. I looked it up on google and found this article which gives a good explanation:
https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org...le-interpretation/on-what-day-did-jesus-rise/

"Ben Witherington III is the Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky and on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University, Scotland."

With all those titles, he really should be better educated than that. The bible is not so muddled as he suggests.

Most people seem to believe Jesus was crucified on a Friday because sundown was the start of that week's Sabbath. The problem with this assumption is Jesus was dead not only three days, but also three nights. There are two nights between Friday at sunset and Sunday at sunrise so that is mathematically impossible unless he rose on a Tuesday.

I actually read an article about that. According to the writer, the only way "on the third day" is the same as "three days and three nights" is if it refers to the third day of the week. Of course, this would move the crucifixion date to a Saturday evening.
  1. Saturday night
  2. Sunday day/night
  3. Monday day/night
  4. Tuesday morning
This wouldl put The Last Supper on a Friday night - the beginning of a weekly Sabbath.

Another article proposes Jesus was crucified on a Thursday in order to make three nights and a Sunday resurrection. The writer of that one argues the word Sabbath does not have to mean a Friday night-Saturday night break from work because Jewish holidays are their own Sabbaths - meaning it could have been a Thursday night-Friday night Passover Sabbath. It looks like this:
  1. Thursday night
  2. Friday day/night
  3. Saturday day/night
  4. Sunday morning
Are either of these ideas Biblical? What about a Wednesday death or Monday resurrection?

Sorry if this post is too long.

There's actually an alternative view that preserves the Friday crucifixion, and keeps the 3 days and 3 nights literal. You can read about it in-depth here:

What did Jesus mean by 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth?

Scripture does not say Jesus was 3 days and nights in the tomb, but rather in the "heart of the earth." Many have failed to understand what this term really means. I don't think it's a metaphor for the grave. I think it's referring to all the events of the Passion, which begin Thursday night and end Sunday morning, exactly 3 days and 3 nights.

I would recommend taking a hard look at this view. It resolves a lot of issues.

Yep, I think you nailed it. Well said. Check out this article when you get a chance: What did Jesus mean by 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth?

I started looking harder into this last year, not satisfied with any of the popular views. Then it dawned on me we may be misinterpreting the phrase "heart of the earth." I'm convinced, now, it's not a reference to the grave or hell. I like how you put it, "the clutches of the world."

It really can only be Thursday based on "3 days and 3 nights." That is not 72 hours, it is an idiom that includes ANY PART of 3 consecutive days and nights. So for example, if he died at 3:00PM on Thursday, then even though there is only a few hours of sunlight left, that is still day 1. ThursDAY is day 1, Friday and Saturday days 2 and 3. Thursday NIGHT would be night 1, Friday night and Saturday night would be nights 2 and 3.

That means he simply had to be resurrected before sunrise on Sunday morning, because SunDAY morning would be day 4. And he was alive before sunrise, because at sunrise the two Mary's found the tomb already empty. He died Thursday afternoon, and resurrected after sunset Saturday night and before sunrise Sunday morning. That is the only way you can get parts of 3 days AND nights in. Wednesday is too far away, Friday too near... the math just doesn't work for those days.

Well, technically, if you insist the phrase "heart of the earth" means the grave, it would have to be a Thursday evening crucifixion, to limit it to 3 days and 3 nights. If the crucifixion was Thursday day, you'd have 4 partial days (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and 3 nights.

But of course an evening crucifixion is absurd.

The answer is defining the phrase "heart of the earth" correctly. If it refers to Jesus submitting to the authority and judgements of earthly men, this actually did start Thursday night, in Gethsemane. He was crucified Friday morning, placed in the tomb from Friday evening to Sunday morning. It ended with the resurrection Sunday morning. Exactly 3 days and 3 nights.

No, it actually doesn't. Matt. 12:40 is the only reference to days and nights regarding the resurrection timeline. And the full 72 hours is never mentioned.

Also, partial days are actually implied. Look at Young's rendering of Luke 24:21.

21 and we were hoping that he it is who is about to redeem Israel, and also with all these things, this third day is passing to-day, since these things happened.

Cleapas was explicit the third day was still in progress after Jesus rose from the dead.

The Wednesday proposal was based on Jesus not being in ther tomb when the two women arrived there a few minutes after dawn on Sunday. Of course the people who got that idea were basing it on 72 hours.

Thursday looks right to me. Now let's see which year Nisan 14 was on a Thursday to make sure of that.

NO you are mistaken the temple he was talking about was his body, and it was raised in three days after he was destroyed.

Read the next two verses after the ones you quoted
John 2
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

I am not mistaken. His body (the temple) was not destroyed by being whipped and beaten by His captors. It was destroyed when He died on the cross. In John 2 He clearly speaks of His death and subsequent resurrection.

The greek work there for "early" means early in the morning.

Actually it doesn't have to equal 72 hrs. Also it says "in 3 days", "on the 3rd day" (9 times) more often than the one time He compares to the Jonah story. He never mentions "nights" in the other verses. YOU say He said "3 NIGHTS and 3 DAYS, the only way you can get you scenario to work.

This passage also does not mention nights. It merely mentioned days, and Christ is dead (temple of body destroyed) for portions of 3 days.

The only issue is the nights in the sign of Jonah parable, which refers to the heart of the earth, which is not a reference to the grave.
