I worked with a guy who came out of Mormonism, thirty years of it, and he gave me a similar model. He said that those in the "Outer Darkness" are relatively few, according to their beliefs, is this true? Did Brigham Young come up with this or Joseph Smith?

It might be true; it might not. They say that anyone who knows Mormonism is true and then denies it goes to Outer Darkness. Outer Darkness is hell.

Latter-day revelation speaks of hell in at least two senses. First, it is the temporary abode in the spirit world for those who were disobedient in mortality. In this sense, hell has an end. The spirits there will be taught the gospel, and sometime following their repentance they will be resurrected to a degree of glory of which they are worthy. Those who will not repent, but are nevertheless not sons of perdition, will remain in hell throughout the Millennium. After these thousand years of torment, they will be resurrected to a telestial glory (D&C 76:81–86; 88:100–101).

Second, it is the permanent location of those who are not redeemed by the Atonement of Jesus Christ. In this sense, hell is permanent. It is for those who are found “filthy still” (D&C 88:35, 102). This is the place where Satan, his angels, and the sons of perdition—those who have denied the Son after the Father has revealed Him—will dwell eternally (D&C 76:43–46).
Hell

I'm sorry that I was interupted.

Doctrine and Covenants 76
A vision given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, February 16, 1832.

Verses 31-38
31 Thus saith the Lord concerning all those who know my power, and have been made partakers thereof, and suffered themselves through the power of the devil to be overcome, and to deny the truth and defy my power—

32 They are they who are the sons of perdition, of whom I say that it had been better for them never to have been born;

33 For they are vessels of wrath, doomed to suffer the wrath of God, with the devil and his angels in eternity;

34 Concerning whom I have said there is no forgiveness in this world nor in the world to come—

35 Having denied the Holy Spirit after having received it, and having denied the Only Begotten Son of the Father, having crucified him unto themselves and put him to an open shame.

36 These are they who shall go away into the lake of fire and brimstone, with the devil and his angels---

37 And the only ones on whom the second death shall have any power;
Doctrine and Covenants 76
  1. Note: The lake of fire and brimstone is not considered literal. It is used to describe a person's guilt for their sins.

  2. Mormons who only quote Bible verses apparently don't want non-Mormons to know their teachings.

If a person wants eternal life they better keep the commandments:

(New Testament | 1 John 2:4)
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

(New Testament | John 17:3)
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Once a person knows the commandments of love and righteousness they should keep them:

(New Testament | 2 Peter 2:21 - 22)
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

What Christians call the Virgin Birth, Mormons do by courtesy only.

That's something they can't agree on among themselves, but the Book of Mormon calls her a virgin.

Basically, you have to try to be so wicked as to be fully cast out of everything.

Once a person is at this point, it's a pretty good bet they wouldn't have repented in life even if they knew what was waiting for them.

That's not what their deceased Living Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith said.

I know, a lot of them disregard past prophets. Mormon teachings come and go. He was prophet from 1970-1972 (the year he died). What's true one year might not be considered true the next.

ROFL!
But I pray for Mormons.
I pray that everyone will eventually see the importance of keeping the commandments. Keeping the commandments is the theme of the Bible and the whole duty of man:
(Old Testament | Ecclesiastes 12:13 - 14)

13 ¶ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Christians follow Jesus. Our obedience is to Him instead of false prophets, because the grace of God is with us. We are saved by grace through faith unto works.

Works done to earn eternal life by LDS:

The time to fulfill the requirements for [eternal life]exaltation is now (see Alma 34:32–34). President Joseph Fielding Smith “In order to obtain the [eternal life]exaltation we must accept the [Mormon]gospel and all its covenants; and take upon us all the obligations which the Lord has offered; and walk in the light and the understanding of the truth; and ‘live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God’” (Doctrines of Salvation, 2:43).

To be [gain eternal life]exalted, we first must place our faith in [LDS]Jesus Christ and then endure in that faith to the end of our lives. Our faith in Him must be such that we repent of our sins and obey His commandments.

He commands us all to receive certain ordinances:

1. We must be baptized (into the LDS church)

2. We must receive the laying on of hands to be confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ(of Latter-day Saints) and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

3. Brethren must receive the Melchizedek Priesthood and magnify their callings in the priesthood.

4. We must receive the temple endowment.

5. We must be married for eternity, either in this life or in the next.

In addition to receiving the required ordinances, the Lord commands all of us to:

1. Love God and our neighbors.

2. Keep the commandments (including extra-biblical ones).

3. Repent of our wrongdoings.

4. Search out our kindred dead and receive the saving ordinances of the [LDS]gospel for them.

5. Attend our Church meetings as regularly as possible so we can renew our baptismal covenants by partaking of the sacrament.

6. Love our family members and strengthen them in the ways of the Lord (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

7. Have family and individual prayers every day.

8. Teach the gospel (
Mormonism) to others by word and example.

9. Study the [LDS] scriptures. (
every day)

10. Listen to and obey the inspired words of the [LDS]prophets of the Lord.

11. Finally, each of us needs to receive the Holy Ghost and learn to follow His direction in our individual lives.

Gospel Principles, c. 1978, 1979, and 1981, Chapter 47, Exaltation, p. 291-292
Chapter 47: Exaltation

“For all who will have a blessing at my hands shall abide the law which was appointed for the blessing, and the conditions thereof, as were instituted before the foundations of the world. (D&C 132:5.)”
Elray L. Christiansen, General Conference, Oct. 1972

Doctrine and Covenants 130
20 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—
21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

2 Nephi 25
23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.
2 Nephi 25

Doctrine and Covenants 25
15 Keep my commandments continually, and a crown of righteousness thou shalt receive. And except thou do this, where I am you cannot come.
