Yet we don't need someone who is so biased against those who are most successful that she suggests unreasonable taxes against them. Success should be encouraged rather than punished. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Suggested a 70% Tax Rate on the Rich. Here’s How It Would Work

The Right always talks about the good ol days; they forget about the tax rate.

Making her the "Donald" of the Left.

Perhaps, but like everything else, a Democrat manages to do it better...

What's the deal with Ronald Reagan riding a dinosaur? I understand filibustering, but why engage in such antics? Global warming is serious business and doesn't deserve that kind of ridicule.

She seems plenty mature by comparison.

She seems a distinguished statesman by comparison... the White House's current occupant would do well to learn a thing or two...

Out of interest, who was receiving the most ridicule in your opinion, the dinosaur or Reagan?

Sorry, I totally forgot to link that. Thanks.

Out of interest I went looking for a similar list for the current congress, but there's only been 2 bills so far, and one of them is a one line bill that read

"Shut down the department of education by 2020"

It's not yet clear to me whether this is some conservative right-wing attempt to ensure the poor get even worse education than they already do, or someone is really mad at Betsy.

At any rate, my assertion will need time to tell.

Well that was a mistake.. How the heck are republicans supposed to rile their base to be scared of AOC if her ideas get permanently shut down? Its already having an affect, there hasn't been a new AOC thread on this board for literally days!...although it could be the Mueller effect.

At a certain point though, when do you want to discourage hoarding of wealth and inequality? She suggested 70%, but at a very high income level, one that a vast majority of people will never see.

Sorry Don, Mitch shut it down.

....a chip off the old block:

“AOC sxxx!” they cried, breaking into the crude refrain as the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., assailed Ocasio-Cortez in warm-up remarks for his father.

“Think about the fact that every mainstream, leading Democratic contender is taking the advice of a freshman congresswoman who three weeks ago didn’t know the three branches of government,” the president’s adult son said, referring to the enthusiasm with which Democratic presidential aspirants have embraced the Green New Deal, the climate plan sponsored by Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.). “I don’t know about you guys, but that’s pretty scary.”

Even scarier - Jr (and Daddy) seems to know the three branches of government but act like only one branch exist.

Business owners could see that amount. Would you like to see them be able to expand their business with that money, or expand the government with it?
Also, was the $10 million figure supposed to be that much in income in a year, or total savings?

Either way though, why should it matter how much money someone else makes or saves? And why would I want to discourage them from achieving such success? Success is something people usually encourage. Isn't that why we strive to go to college, get good grades, get a good job, etc.?

Money that is being taxed is money that by definition is not being put back into the business. We don't tax revenue, we tax profit. And considering she was specifically talking about a income tax, tit would be yearly income.

I do encourage success. But if we want the economy to grow we also need to discourage concentration of wealth. After a certain point money only becomes a way to keep score. High marginal interest rates are meant as much to encourage reinvestment of funds as they are to generate revenue for the federal government.

Correct. If it's being taxed, then it doesn't go back into the business, but to the government. I'd rather see the owner have the option of putting it back into the business. That creates more jobs. Giving it to the government doesn't.

Since there are plenty of ways for people to invest the money they earn, there are just as many ways to have it benefit everyone. If it's invested in the stock market, it benefits other companies that keep more people employed. If it's invested in CD's at a bank, it gives the bank more money to loan to those who need loans to start businesses or buy a home.

Most people are going to be investing their saved money somehow, especially if their earnings are over 10 million.

That between Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Donald, she's more dignified than he is?

Why aren't you allowed to consider that?

I really, really do not understand how people can look at what Trump did, the unprecendented way he rose to power, the poor decisions made by his opposition, and then ignore all that history and repeat the same mistakes. Oh well, the lefty head spin as Trump succeeded was agonising for me, at least the rightie one for AOC will be both ironic and entertaining.
I haven't seen many on the left comment on that but it is true that there are quite a few similarities between Trump and Cortez.

Some on the right seem to want to laugh at her but she's being taken quite seriously. There's more admiration for her than you might realize. Policy-wise, I disagree with her on a lot of things. But she's an outsider from the grassroots who's taking on her party's establishment and I wish her all the luck.

But if I vote in 2020, it'll be for the Republicans, sorry.

In this regard, I agree -- turns out she is the outsider that made good that Donald pretended to be...

Her circumstances are different. She's in no position to set policy for the entire government. She has to make noise, grab attention, be outrageous, etc. As you know, she's doing an amazing job. The more establishment Democrats she offends, the better. In the end, term limits aren't an issue for her so time is on her side.

President Trump has to maintain his electoral viability while implementing as much of his agenda as he can. His supporters love him and that buys him some political security in the party. But at the end of the day, deals have to be made and he has to make them. The fewer establishment Republicans he offends, the better. Term limits are an issue for President Trump; time isn't on his side.

They're both handling their situations well.

Seriously, if her campaign finance problems do not lead to the DNC 'asking' her to step down for the cause of the 'team'. Nancy will probably give the signal if/when it comes to that.

Top tax rate during the Eisenhower administration (frequently cited as being among the top contenders for "Good Old Days" status) was 91%.
