Have you read the hoo-ha about the Pope sharply withdrawing his hand when the faithful try to kiss his papal ring ? The infantilism ought to be shocking, but it's normal. They're raging or whining about it incessantly on Twitter.

And to top it all, the author of the article on RT.com describes, not the papal ring-kissing, but Francis' jerking his hands away, as 'cringe-worthy !' I dare him tell that to St Peter on Judgment Day or to the angel in Daniel and I believe, the Apocalypse, too, who respectively told Daniel and John to stand up, they were just fellow-servants of God, like themselves.

Kissing the Pope's ring is a sign of respect to the Office and jerking his hand away could be seen as an insult to the faithful.

I think I read where he would pull people to their feet so he could embrace them instead of the person kissing the ring. I'll have to research it.
I never heard anyone say that about JPII.

  1. Apparently, with Pius XII it went 'full spectrum', so that, according to the top, UK, Catholic journalist of the day (Peter Hebblethwaite, a former Jesuit), he ordained that journalists should kneel at his feet while he dictated to them ; while, apart from being carried in the sede gestatoria, he was driven in a Mercedes limousine (a gift from the company) with gold door-handles. Not good, was it ?

That's incorrect. The truth is JPII would always let people kiss the papal ring.

I just finished looking and found many examples:

At the start of the video

1:21-1:23

1:50-1:53

0:58-1:03

1:00-1:03 and 2:48-2:53 and 3:00-3:01

0:59-1:02
The happiest day of Mother Teresa's life

His policies and orders saved 700,000 jews from death. I'll give him a pass on the gold door handles.

Do you really think those Italian priests, nuns and lay-people would have waited for his permission to save those Jews ?

Good thing they did not have to. His policies, spy network, and orders to convents and the future St. Pope John XXII backed and supported the mechanisms. Venerable Pope Pius XII was indeed a righteous gentile. So I will let him slide on a car.

I swear I read it in one of his bios. I'll figure it out later after doing some searching.
If it said that in his bio it was wrong. The video footage shows JPII letting people kiss the papal ring. And there are many examples of it as I posted. Are you not able to watch YouTube videos with your cellphone?

Have you read anything about JPII concerning this issue?

Like you, I thought he would at times raise people up to an embrace, but after the kiss. The only time I know he did not allow any honor was in Israel with the woman who he saved when she was a child. He would not let her honor him in any way.

Edith Zierer, Holocaust survivor saved by pope, dies

I do recall him lifting people into an embrace but that might have been a quick thing in addition to the kiss. I know I kissed his ring and he did not pull it away. I know he let it happen and was not against it. But he followed it with more usually if there was time.

So I do not think he prevented it but it was followed by a more in-depth greeting. At least that is how it was at World Youth Day. So he allowed it.

The bio I read was by his Jewish friend. JPII ended up officiating his daughter's marriage if I remember correctly. Like I said, I'll research it but I no longer have that book.
