my car has all sorts of features --- speed control, lane keeping, following distance, etc. --- I can cancel that at the push of a button --- it seems the 738 pilots do not have that option --- that is freaking scarey

Not so much the wrong engines as failing to fully redesign the plane to take account of them. Instead using a software fix, and relying on a compliant FAA and lobbyists to ensure it was green lit.

Redesigning what was there would have been a waste of time and prohibitively expensive a totally new aircraft design would have been cheaper, hence my comment about using the wrong engines on that existing airframe.
