Semi Automatic Assault Rifles are not designed for sporting purposes, but for warfare.
Don’t know about Australia but in the US we have professional shooting teams which do compete with assault rifles.

The punishment would be to force all gun owners to surrender their guns. That's what the mayor of Christchurch wants. Frankly I think that is a knee-jerk reaction. Many active NZrs enjoy pig and deer hunting in the NZ bush, and farmers need firearms to deal with rabbits, rats, etc that invade their farms. Those gun-owners are not the villians here.

No one needs a semi-automatic to hunt rabbits, pigs and deer.

Granted, except a farmer in the McKenzie Country in the South Island says that the large number of rabbits invading farms needs a semi-automatic rifle to keep the numbers down, although of a lower calibre.

I don't know what your Scripture quote has to do with gun control though.

The gun man used five guns, he had licenses for all of them. I get the satire of your reaction but there is something here worth mentioning, the foundation of a free people is a moral consensus. You know they are going to go for stricter gun control, guess we will have to wait and see how that works out for them.
it will have no effect . any one willing to do these sort of extreme things will go to extremes to get it done . Nz already has strict gun laws ..
for instance i have a minor weed smoking conviction from 40 years ago... To my knowledge i can never buy or own or have a licence for a fire arm .
in this case he "chose" NZ .simply because of our relaxed state of freedom-
which because of his actions will now be undemocratically undermined and ebbed away from us .

no i'm not into conspiracy theories ,this is a random act of planned hatred by an extrem extreme minority .but in every country these tragedies are being used politically for the same agenda - erode freedoms using the fear of the people .

Didn't the UK have a gun ban? then knifing deaths increased.

Banning a weapon doesn't reduce the bloodlust of your populace, it just tells them to select another weapon.

So why is US not selling heavy machine guns or mortars to the general populace ?

The guns are already restricted everywhere. It is just a matter of where the line is drawn. If you need an assault rifle for selfdefence or hunting you are living in a very curious neighbourhood.

Good point. My point however, is the limitation of weapons doesn't solve the problem.

the only advantage being (and it is admittedly an advantage ) mass killing like this become more difficult .so it does increase a perception of safety

Guns don't kill people. People kill people, and not only with guns.
So if this man had walked into a mosque with a knife, do you really think he would have been able to kill 50 people?

sheesh - did they even TRY thoughts and prayers?
Did you ever think that they did try thoughts and prayers and that is why they are calling for restrictions on guns?

Exactly.

I think it’s a mistake to say that people who advocate for gun control are attempting to remedy “murder” - because as people accurately point out - if I want to kill you and a gun isn’t available - I’ll grab a brick and konk you in the noggin’

Murder is hard to do anything about.

What people are wanting to address tho is easy to commit MASS murder. Like you properly point out - some guy ain’t gonna walk into a place with a knife and likely kill off 30-40 people in short shrift. Some guy with a knife or brick isn’t going to be able to knock out a window and kill off 70+ people from 200 yards out.

When it comes to MASS murder - your options are few and far between. And it’s THAT which people are trying to address.

Give me a choice between someone pointing a gun at me from 10 yards out or someone coming at me with a knife - and I’ll take the knife guy 100 times out of 100.

Well, you could restrict guns to two-shot derringers. Those can't be used in mass-shootings. Although, when it comes to being mobbed by a gang of angry thugs one does want a weapon that can be used for mass murder.

Does anyone question the rise in mass shootings in the past 5 years or so? Does it seem strange that this was never a thing until more recently? Has anyone looked into the statistics that almost every shooting was during a rehearsal of the exact shooting? They had police and military on the grounds enacting a shooting, and all of a sudden a "real" shooting begins? What are the chances?

There isn't. There's just an increase of reporting of mass shootings.

What world do you live in where you think you’ll both be mobbed by throngs of people looking to do you harm - and also in that moment have had the fortune of carrying around a gun capable of handling that? lol

Will hate and scorn bring the victims back? Ease the suffering of family members? Because while derisively attempting to ridicule thoughts and prayers that is all you are offering in return, hate and scorn. But then I suppose that is considered enlightened, or something.

It's called America, post 2016, where wearing a hat leftist do not like can get you attacked, beaten, or targeted by a news media attempting to destroy your life even if you are only sixteen years old.
