The gun man used five guns, he had licenses for all of them. I get the satire of your reaction but there is something here worth mentioning, the foundation of a free people is a moral consensus. You know they are going to go for stricter gun control, guess we will have to wait and see how that works out for them.

Does anyone question the rise in mass shootings in the past 5 years or so? Does it seem strange that this was never a thing until more recently? Has anyone looked into the statistics that almost every shooting was during a rehearsal of the exact shooting? They had police and military on the grounds enacting a shooting, and all of a sudden a "real" shooting begins? What are the chances?

Not in favour of this. We already have restrictive gun laws here which block most from having a weapon. I don't believe in punishing the lawful majority because one Australian did something evil.

sheesh - did they even TRY thoughts and prayers?
Maybe they should try an anti-Evil Amendment which forbids any evil acts.

See how that works.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people, and not only with guns.

If guns kill people, then guns protect people too. Where is the balance?

It is the "heart condition" of the individual that does the killing.
Its not because of any inanimate object of any kind. Be it a car, A gun, A knife, A board or whatever, If a person has murder in mind, He will find a way to do it.

The more the bible is removed from society, The more the evil dark hearts becomes apparent.
This is simple folks. Remove the light and darkness creeps in.

I agree. Lots of dead innocent people...ok. But what about my good time??

So because innocent people died we punish innocent law abiding people in return. Logical.

It's like the gunman in the tram in the Netherlands. If they follow the same principle, they would have to take all their trams off the road! :)

Punish in what way?
The punishment would be to force all gun owners to surrender their guns. That's what the mayor of Christchurch wants. Frankly I think that is a knee-jerk reaction. Many active NZrs enjoy pig and deer hunting in the NZ bush, and farmers need firearms to deal with rabbits, rats, etc that invade their farms. Those gun-owners are not the villians here.

That might be justified if trams were regularly used as weapons in mass murders.

From what I understand the focus in NZ will be on semi-automatic and automatic weapons which no one needs for hunting or varmint control.

OK, I am an Australian and I live in a city. I don't need a gun. Urban dwellers in Australia have very little licit reason for having a weapon, save perhaps for sporting purposes and I imagine the same may be true in New Zealand.

Semi Automatic Assault Rifles are not designed for sporting purposes, but for warfare. I see no reason why any of us should need one, let alone 5, however I accept that there may be some licit purpose, however I would regard it as in the general interest of the wider population that these might be regulated, and that persons desiring to own one might be expected to demonstrate good character, and the appropriate skills and safety regulations for both housing and using them. The other day I saw (on Facebook I think) an ad for a semi automatic handgun firing # shots in ten seconds, and I wonder why.

Australia and New Zealand are not exposed to regular mass shootings in our communities, so we are significantly shattered when it happens. Most Australians I believe would hold the view that we are a safer community for having tighter gun control and fewer guns around. I don't know that I know anyone with a gun, though I know a couple of people in rural areas, and they may well have one.

Varmint control? But...but...what about my good time? I really like firing that gun!

Dead innocent people? People die all the time. Why can't people see that it's my entertainment that's at stake here!

I am presuming a level of cynicism on your part. We have for some time now resolved to accept heliocentricity, and as yet I have been unaware of a proposition that we adopt DZoolandercentricity as the new paradigm. Perhaps those who need guns could have them housed as the Police station, and then when they want to use them, they can go to the police station to get there gun for the stated purpose and then return it.
