We are supposed to refer to the first person of the Trinity as Father. Is that just a title of respect, or are their ways in which He is like a human father in His dealing with man?

Jesus said we pray "our father in heaven" and didn't provide a name to call him by separately. Jesus also said that we would pray directly to the Father, but also did not provide an additional name to call Him by. So Father I would imagine is fine.

If I am not mistaken, it has to do with the adoption as sons in Christ Jesus.

Although, I have heard that the title can refer to other things too.

Jesus refers to the First Person of the Trinity as Father, and in some of his teachings, he compares God's love for us to a father's love for his children. The New Testament continues this imagery, using the metaphor of a father-son relationship as a way of describing the Incarnation. The imagery is used in the Nicene Creed as well, for the relationship between the First and Second Persons.

So I hear it as one of many metaphors that we use for God, and for the First Person of the Trinity in particular. It's a good metaphor, and one used by Jesus himself, but only a metaphor, like much of our other language about God.

Okay. So just a title?
When we go to our Father in prayer, we go in the name of Jesus. Why? Because that is how Lord Jesus instructs us to approach our Father. Lord Jesus is our High Priest, our Intercessor , our Advocate, our Lawyer. His blood has paid the penalty for us, therefore His name gives us access to the throne of our Father.

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

So if you arem wanting a name, call Him Jesus.

If E = mc2 then we can divide and conclude that...

Mass (m) = Energy (E/c2)

And there are three varieties...

Natural E/c2 - All mass is basically cooled plasma
Mental E/c2 - Mentally, A mathematical formula, but this has chemical and spiritual properties as well.
Spiritual E/c2 - E (motivation, warmth, love) / c2 (faith, hope, charity, joy)

God is the energy and light behind all creation. Terms that would be befitting him...

1. Father
2. God
3. El Shaddai - All mighty!
4. Elohim - Supreme
5. Yahwei - I Am
6. Jehovah - The Existing One
7. Abba - Daddy
8. Elyon -Most High
9. Elroi- The God who sees
10. Adonai- Lord

To me there are many ways to refer to the Father, only one to refer to the Son... And that is the name of Jesus.

When we are born again, we enter the family of God as sons, with all of the rights and privileges due sons, so He is our Father.
Sure, all that macho bluff and bluster. Hormones distorting the fabric of society....

I’m calling the Father “Jesus”?
Here is what the scriptures say.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Who shall be called the everlasting Father? The Son.

Scripture also says the name of Jesus is above every other name.
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

"Abba" is the familiar form (not the diminuitive/child language 'daddy', as some assert), as used by sons throughout their lives to refer to their fathers. So I would say it's almost less of either a title or a formal name and more of a vocative (a form used to call someone's attention). You can see this in Christ's prayer at Gethsemane, when He prays "“Abba, Father, all things are possible to you..." Abba and Father mean the same thing, but one is more familiar, being in Christ's native Aramaic.

We don't do this so much in English anymore, so it might look kind of strange, but traditionally the vocative we would use would be O (sometimes incorrectly rendered as Oh), as you sometimes still see in hymn texts or songs, e.g., O Holy Night.

Interestingly in Arabic, even though "our father" is abouna (this is how we directly address priests in our Church in Arabic -- e.g., Fr. So-and-so is Abouna So-and-So), the Arabic of the Lord's prayer uses the form Abana, clearly from the Aramaic, and still preserving the same sense (the common Semitic root word in all of these forms is 'ab, the 'standard' word for father): Abana ilathy fi s-Samawat...

In Syriac, which is a more direct descendant of Aramaic, it is "Aboon" as you can hear in the Syriac Lord's prayer -- "Aboon d'Bashmayo":

So why do we call God "Father"? One way you could look at it is that we are His children and we want to get His attention to talk with Him. :)

The name of God for this covenant is Jesus Christ.

Sure, we could call the Holy Spirit YHWH, and the Father Elohiym (or probably vice versa) .. but since Jesus means YHWH's Salvation, and Elohiym means God .. does the scripture indicate that the Father wants to be called by a name?

Jesus seemed to think so. He called Him His Father, and told us to address Him as such.
