Hey Ben,

Just FYI there is a married couples section under life stages that I believe would give you the more narrow audience you're asking for.

Are you referring to tights that show her rear end, or her legs, while her rear is covered up ?

I was married, so I'm not speaking without experience. I wouldn't say jealousy is the reason I'd have an issue with it. But I would want her to follow what the Bible tells us:

1 Timothy 2:9-10
1 Peter 3:1-22
Deuteronomy 22:5
Proverbs 11:22
Proverbs 31:2

I'm not sure that just married couples would have something to offer for input.

I'll just say that jealousy doesn't come to my mind in this instance. I know my wife is attractive and people are going to look. My wife knows (due to communication) what type of clothing would bother me in public and respects me enough not to wear it. I return that favor but usually that's more along the lines of not wearing things that don't match, because how embarrassing for me to look silly at Wal-Mart!

I don't think her butt should be outright visible, but (though others may) I have no reservations on revealing legs.

I couldn't access the marriage section... can someone give me a link or something. Im just trying to find out why guys feel disrespected by it so I can feel normal. I want to count how many feel uncomfortable at their wife revealing so much of their body and WHY. If I can understand the why, then I can thus feel human. Of course, there;s a slim chance not too many married christian guys are going to come out and say the 'why' they feel disrespected. But I'm on the hunt ! :)

Would I (actually DID I) feel jealous? Of course not. It is kind of a boost for other guys to want what I already have. And it can be a boost for her as well:

Back when our twins were still in infant car seats, we were shopping at a bread store. 2 guys came up after we got back in the van and started hitting pretty hard on my wife. Right in front of me. She told them she was married, a mother and her kids were there in the back seat and I was sitting next to her. They said to find a sitter, bring me along and they would get me passed out drunk and then they could have a REAL GOOD TIME together. We laughed it off and drove home; but she was beaming from the unexpected attention for days.

Let's be honest, revealing clothes or not, guys still look at women. It doesn't make me jealous when other guys look at my wife. However, as Christians, my wife and I dress modestly and appropriately. If I felt she was dressing immodestly, we might have a conversation (we never have), but it wouldn't be because I was thinking I might get jealous of other people looking at her. It would be out of respect for her.

The flip side of this is you can feel good about having an attractive mate, who other guys would want to look at.

If youre jealous because you think your wife might actually end up with one of these other guys, then you have problems way beyond clothing issues.

The scriptures teach women to wear modest clothes that do not present the body as an object of lust or attraction. If a "Christian" man's wife is wearing immodest clothes he should actually tell her to get back in the house and change clothes. But hey who cares what the scriptures say anymore right?

out of context.

The scriptures teach that women should wear modest clothing to not flaunt their wealth to those who are poor. We see the word "modest" and think sex. But the context of those scriptures does not support that assumption.

1 Timothy 2:9
Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,

You dont think modest clothing cover the nakedness of a woman? do you think its godly for a woman to dress in a manner that draws attention to her body and figure? This exposing of the body is in opposition of shamefacedness and modesty. you understand lust is a sin and to dress in a manner that exposes the body in such a way that causes lust is also sinful.

I will not disagree with you on that.

What I disagree with is the out-of-context use of scripture.

"shamefacedness" Interesting word. αἰδώς It is used twice in the NT, once here and in Heb 12.28 where it is translated "reverence." I do not see a sexually immodest meaning on that either.
It literally means having downcast eyes.

Strongs (G127) says it means: a sense of shame or honour, modesty, bashfulness, reverence, regard for others, respect

I would say this is a prime example of where we have let our own cultural understanding interpret scripture, which was written from an entirely different culture and viewpoint.

It should be that we let scripture speak to the culture rather than vice versa.

And this difference is important to note for the sake of the Body of Christ.

The major issue for Paul wasn't the women in the congregation running around with, what, bare knees? That wasn't happening anyway.

His problem was with congregations that had every level of social status from slaves to politicians (or at least their wives) needing to mesh as a Body.

And that issue hasn't changed since then.
