We are Italian and just bought a new house, so of course we went through all of our superstitious blessing rituals. I try to keep a rational mind and want to believe that our superstitious traditions are just that but every now and then I think what if and better safe than sorry. Anyways my husband bought a Ouija board from Walmart, he says he needs it for a joke at work. Is it irrational for me to forbid it from being brought into the house. Also is it bad luck to tell people a friend who is in the hospital has died as part of a joke.

I would not have a ouija board in our home.

I don’t know if such a joke is bad luck, but it seems in bad taste.

Bad taste definitely... you have no idea
My husband’s supervisor, who also happens to be one of his best friends and one of my closest girlfriends is in the hospital for a non life threatening but serious condition. He told everyone else I his team that she died but made clear to him that she is still in charge, that’s why he needs the ouija board. I know it’s just a joke but this just feels like bad juju.

That isn’t a joke. That is sick and wrong.

Ouija boards are just a piece of cardboard with writing. They are not real. I think being afraid of Ouija boards is assigning them far too much power.

I used one a couple years back. I was raised to think they were evil and scary but as I got older i realized that it's just a gimmick. Hasbro has not found the secret to communicating with the other side I think fearing things without discernment can end up being a little disrespectful to God. If we just dismiss it as "I dont want to mess with it" and fear it by default, it takes away from the weight of other things we do believe.

When Ouija boards do "work", it's because of this psychological phenomenon where if you anticipate something is going to happen your body subconsciously will begin to lean in that direction. Since everybody is so lightly touching the planchette it is easily moved by such a subtle push. As the planchette moves, anticipation builds and more participants may expect the result which causes the thing to move faster. Really funny actually because it quite literally shows it's only as scary as you believe it is.

Hope this helps :) tldr; let silly toys be silly toys.

People care too much about what others believe is right and wrong. Don't worry about what we tell you. We're not in your marriage. Do YOU believe it's okay to have a oiuja board in your house? Do YOU think it's okay to use for a joke? If you're unsure, search the scriptures and let the Holy Spirit guide you.

It's not so much the board but it's what you do with the board, that's where dark power is at. Even if there is no response on the board you're giving place to darkness. That said I'd never have one in my house anyway.

Your husband is playing with fire, it isn't a funny joke and actually is foolish more than anything else. He obviously has no clue about the dark side of the spiritual realm, if he did he wouldn't even think of this. Or worse if he does have a clue then you have a bigger problem.

I agree with Peachie in that ouija being nothing more than cardboard.... items such as those only have as much power as the intent to have the item. A napkin or sheet of paper and a pen can have the same purpose as an ouija, it doesn't make a piece of paper and pen evil.

That said, I also wouldn't want one in my house, not because of "its evil" I just have no need for one and any "event" or joke at work that needed one crosses the line of "intent" to "jokingly contact the dead" or even serious intent to do so.

Im sure that all "fun" could be had and nothing bad come of it. However, IF we believe in spirits, if we believe that demons and devils exist.... why even give those spirits a foot in the door.... no matter how slim the chance anything might come of it. Why chance it even if its only a .0000000000000001% chance? Sure the numbers may be in your favor.... but even if its 1 in a billion chance....... what if you were that 1... was it worth it?

Same reason I never swim in Galveston beach..... sure, the odds of a shark are so very slim... but given the look of the beach, the tiny waves and the disgusting look of the water..... even the slim chance isn't worth it for the 2 seconds of fun I MIGHT have in the water.

Hi SunshineRayze. The point of staying away from a ouija board as a believer in Christ would be the same reason as staying away from a crystal ball - whether they work or not. What do they represent? What's the claim behind them? Saul's offensive sin of consulting the dead, Isaiah's and other prophets' warnings to shun the occult, and New Testament passages like Revelation let us know God's will concerning everything that embraces those practices. God tells us in several different ways and in several different places within His Word to stay away from that kind of stuff.

There's no reason we should fear the occult, no matter how strange and spiritually risky it is. Fear of it wouldn't be why a Christian stays away from them. Our loyalty and our eternal dwelling closely within Jesus Christ (John 15:1-7) is our reason for staying away from what God's Word reveals is against His will. There's really no rationalization outside His Word revealing His will about why we do or don't do something.

I hope this helps.

For those of you who think that a ouija board is just a piece of cardboard you are absolutely right. They were invented in the 20th century as a board game to capatalize off the magic craze. I would say no more or less evil than magic the gathering.
Hope this helps :) tldr; let silly toys be silly toys.
This is possibly the best reply concerning the nature of the board it self
o YOU believe it's okay to have a oiuja board in your house? Do YOU think it's okay to use for a joke? If you're unsure, search the scriptures and let the Holy Spirit guide you.
However, how you answer these two questions would tell you everything you need to know. If you and your husband think that it may be offensive to God than it probably is. And if you and your husband cannot see any way this joke could possibly bring glory to God it probably doesn't.
My personal belief is that there is no spiritual danger in this if there is no genuine attempt at sorcery or fraud. However, you may want to remind your husband of the possible professional consequences of this type of behavior. You said that he is friends worth his supervisor and his supervisor is one of your close girlfriends correct? Imagine how unprofessional this type of joke would appear to the rest of the company staff. If you were one of your friend's subordinate how much respect for her would you loose if you were told by another employee that she died and you now need to take some time out of your day for a fake seance. Or if you were your friend's supervisor, how would you feel that company time was being wasted like that. It is best to keep work professional. Or what if another employee experienced a death in the family recently , wouldn't a joke like this be in very poor taste and could possibly lead to an incident with HR? These are additional questions I think you should be asking your husband and possibly your friend as well.

Ouija boards invite demonic activities in your home and lives with anyone who plays with it. I know people who have messed with it and the end result ALWAYS turns out horrible. It's not funny. It's not just a game. It's demonic. Seriously, do your research on these things.

No such thing as bad luck.

Saying someone has died who has not is sick thinking.

I agree with PeachieKeen...just a cardboard game. It means nothing. It only holds the power you give it. Don't buy into the silly nonsense. I wouldn't buy one or play with one but I see it as being no different than a game of monopoly. (which I don't play either because I'd rather play other games)

As far as the lie...that's just in bad taste.

As the resident Christian mystic of our group let me just say that you will have more luck paying with your groceries with Monopoly money than you will opening a portal to demons with a Milton Bradley Ouija board from Wal*Mart.

I would throw it away.

It is not just a cardboard game, although at one time I also thought that. When I was younger I fiddled with one and the device moved on its own to answer a question. I never touched one again.

No it is not okay. Operating in any witchcraft will open doors for demons to have ground to hurt your spiritually and your bloodline. There should not be any rituals done either. The only clean and pure power we are to operate by, on, in, and through is the power of God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit. Please read the booklet "The Deadly Dangers of Witchcraft" by Win Worley.

Not just a bad joke--a disturbing joke.
This is not a good idea in the slightest.
Not only are you toying with things like divination but people's emotions.

I'm sorry but I find this line of "joking" in poor taste.
