Logos - a word (as embodying an idea), a statement, a speech

Jesus (being the word) is the perfect embodiment of all that God is, His laws, His character, His love, all His ways.

John 10:30

30 I and the Father are one.

A statement, a speech. That sounds like the scriptures. Why isnt the scriptures considered part of the Word?

Scripture is God breathed ... and contains everything God wants us to know about Him, His laws, His love, His character, His ways ... so yes the Word (Jesus) is the embodiment of all those. Didn't state that because I thought that goes without saying. ;o) We wouldn't know about Gods ways without the scriptures.

God Bless.

The name (or, perhaps, title) “the Word” apparently identifies the function that God’s firstborn Son performed after other intelligent creatures were formed. A similar expression is found at Exodus 4:16, where Jehovah says to Moses concerning his brother Aaron: “And he must speak for you to the people; and it must occur that he will serve as a mouth to you, and you will serve as God to him.” As spokesman for God’s chief representative on earth, Aaron served as “a mouth” for Moses. Likewise with the Word, or Logos, who became Jesus Christ. Almighty God evidently used his Son to convey information and instructions to others of his family of spirit sons, even as he used that Son to deliver his message to humans on earth.

Showing that Jesus continued to serve as his Father’s Spokesman, or Word, during his earthly ministry, he told his listeners: “I have not spoken out of my own impulse, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to tell and what to speak…. Therefore the things I speak, just as the Father has told me them, so I speak them.”-John 7:16, 17; 12:49, 50; 14:10; 18:37.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)

We understand that "the Word" is Jesus. And you are asking why Jesus is called "the Word".

This term, Word, could be an image to represent something about Jesus. A human word starts in our mind and heart, then it proceeds from us in order for it to produce a certain result.

Like this, Jesus before the earth was, was in God's heart, and He was God, too. And He proceeded to this earth in order to produce God's result, which is that there will be many people who are like Jesus > Romans 8:29.

God did not send only a word composed of letters in order to do this, but He sent His own Son as the model, the image of how our Father wants us all to be like His own Son whom He so loves and enjoys . . . so we can be pleasing to Him the way Jesus is. And we can share in our Father's love the way Jesus does, and Jesus has claimed this in prayer for us > John 17:22-26.

Also, I consider how Isaiah 55:11 says >

"'So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
. It shall not return to Me void,
. But it shall accomplish what I please,
. And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.'"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (Isaiah 55:11)

Possibly, here, God means both His words and Jesus shall do all which God means by giving us His scriptures and sending His own Son Jesus.

And Jesus is the living meaning of all which is written by God or spoken by God in words. And how Jesus has lived and loved is the meaning of all which God has given us for words. So, in this way Jesus is the Word of God.

And, by the way, then, this can mean that our example can be used by God as His message to people. The example of Christ and His example through us can minister His deeper-than-words meaning of His words.

Thank you.
The book of John was penned by him with an audience in mind; to the Gentiles and also Hellenistic Jews . His choice of using the "word" was to convey a message. The message was that the Word(Jesus) was present at the beginning, He is God and was with God. It was to inform them that's Jesus Christ is indeed God.
John also wanted to show something more about the nature and ' function' of the eternal Son. So he called him “Ho Logos.”

Ho Logos literally means “the word,” but to the Greek mind it also represented “Reason” in the Ideal sense.

From History, it's believed that the first man to contemplate an ultimate “knowledge,” or “reason” which could be described as Ho Logos, was Heraclitus 500B.C.(His name is even mentioned in the strong's concordance for the translation of Logos). Heraclitus saw the Logos as a “message” which the world (cosmos) had to offer. It was not simply a literal message, but rather “the reason things are as they are," like why the moon is the way it is, the sun(it's brightness, heat and radiance etc).

Later the Stoics expounded this message (which has been mostly perceived as logos) and concluded that the universe is made up of; matter(or the physical component) and another sort of force ordering and organizing the universe into place. To them this force was some sort of energy that brought all creation into order. This was their logos.

Later on, a sect of Jews who grew up with the mosaic law sought to integrate their knowledge of the law, their culture with Greek philosophy. One of these men was Philo who reasoned that Logos was not merely a force but God's Own reason. Some ancient scripts show that he called Logos-"God's firstborn son". Philo said that the cosmos was so ordered because God's Reason ordered it.
He acknowledged though that God's reason is infinite but Logos wasn't a person or being. Philo's teaching impacted many Jews(esp the Hellenists).

So John knowing his audience of Jews and Greeks, sought to Counter the radical claims about Logos depicting that Logos was not a mere force but in fact The Son of God-Jesus Christ who took on human form. Logos was the person of Jesus Christ. That the very thing that enervates the universe was dwelling among men(John 1:14). He preached a gospel proclaiming that Jesus Christ through whom all things were made had been seen by him and many other men(who didn't acknowledge him).

The idea of the Word of Yahweh as an individual is preChristian, and goes by the name Memra in Jewish discussion. It comes in part from verses like the following 1 Samuel 3:21 "And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD." Notice here that the Word is an appearance.

To add to this statement, is that some of the prayers of the Orthodox church include the phrase of "logical sheep", that is humanity, in that we are thinking creatures.

From my understanding so the people could always connect back to the Creator no matter how far they fell into separation we have the Christ . Through the Christ you can instantly come back to God no matter how far you separated yourself from God . Its not only the words , but the vibration behind the words . Thats why its important to internalize, study Jesus statements to connect to God .
