US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared for a partial shutdown of the US government - now entering its third week - to last years.

After meeting top Democrats, he also said he could declare a national emergency to bypass Congress and build a US-Mexico border wall.

Mr Trump insisted he would not sign any bill without wall funding, which Democrats adamantly oppose.

Source.

Honestly. This is just embarrassing to watch. Can someone please escort him to get ice cream with the other children while the grown-ups do some actual work?

While you are certainly entitled to disagree with him (and I’m not saying that I do), there’s nothing wrong with the tactic. It’s one way presidents can get their agenda done without a majority in Congress.

We'll see how much some of his lower income supporters appreciate this tactic when their much needed tax returns are significantly delayed.

Being that southern conservative pockets of the country are the ones that typically get the larger tax return per income, he might get some flak on that.

When some Alabamans (who's median incomes are ~$23,000 per year, but typically get a $2800 refund) who really need that money are waiting because "Showing those illegal liberals a thing or two" was apparently worth shutting the government down, we'll see if they still back that decision.

So long as the GOP is now OK with the "Imperial President" thing the idea of "National Emergency" is definitely the way to go.

But as far as the pay thing, well I should think the American Government Employees would be PROUD have a president so brave he doesn't care how much it hurts them.

I think we need to remember that Trump doesn't feel the pain of no paycheck. He's still got a lot of money. If government workers were so worried about living from paycheck to paycheck they should have established a charity like Trump did. This is why Trump is a great businessman.

He's welcome to continue owning the shutdown that he caused.
Ringo

He has a hard time with that. Sure he said he would but he spends about half his time blaming everyone else.

I liked how at today's news conference he still said it was OK if you wanted to blame Pelosi and Shumer.

There's nothing more inspiring than a leader who knows that the buck stops somewhere. Maybe over there.

I think the solution is obvious, get a by partisan bill through with enough votes that doesn't need his sigbiture, that's how they got the sanctions on Russia through. Trump is defining his entire administration by what he signs and don't sign. The Congress needs to send a clear message that they control the budget. He has the diplomatic skills of a gorilla who lost his bananas. I'd also like the international community censor his tarriffs so he with stop these fits and actually get involved with the process.I hope Mueller is tracking the abuse of power because he shuts down the boarder or declares a state of emergency he is flaggrantly abusing his executive privalage for political gain.

I love the phrase "a gorilla who lost his bananas". I'm going to attempt to remember that. Thanks! :)

It appears this may be what happens, as some Republican Senators already appear to be breaking ranks with the President. I suspect, if this goes on too long, you'll get enough bi-partisan support to pass, and override Trump's veto, on the original compromise that was made before Christmas (the one Trump changed his mind on the last day).

With Trump it is now a matter of pride. He has backed himself into a corner and can't figure a way out without losing face with his supporters. Congress really does need to take more control. The man who would be king is attempting to rule by fiat (executive orders) and he is damaging the country and peoples' lives. It may take decades to undo the damage he has done in just two years.

It's wrong, though.

He's basically holding a gun to the country's head to subvert the democratic process.

Trump isn't the first U.S. president to push through his political agenda and ignore Congress. Andrew Jackson did that with his Indian Removal Act in 1830 and it resulted in the Trail of Tears. I decided to mention this because Trump put the portrait of that tyrannical president back into the Oval Office.

Andrew Jackson was called ‘Indian killer.’ Trump honored Navajos in front of his portrait.

I know he's not the first, but it's still pretty ridiculous to do it over such a controversial subject that doesn't have anywhere close to a clear majority from the people he's there to serve.

Wow, what a message THAT would send! I almost forgot it was possible. We really need Trump to make a derogatory remark about Mitch McConnell’s wife...

I’m imagining Trump holed up in the Whitehouse a year from now with a shotgun, round the clock Big Mac delivery, unshaven with his hair sticking straight up, with only 2 “acting” cabinet members left, (Richard Spencer and Sean Hannity,) abandoned by his family, and refusing to resign because he faces indictment the moment he leaves, and still refusing to sign a bill and reopen the government because he can’t get his darn wall.

Trump would love to find a reason to declare martial law. That may be why he would like to see widespread rioting. Excuse to declare martial law and get some payback from his enemies.

Excuse me while I check on my “emergency plan”.
