We all know that Christians should not celebrate Christmas, Halloween, and Easter because these holidays can be connected to paganism. What's not often talked about, however, is the pagan origins of New Years. A quick glance at the Wikipedia article for New Years Day reveals this. And I quote:

"In pre-Christian Rome under the Julian calendar, the day was dedicated to Janus, god of gateways and beginnings, for whom January is also named."

How blasphemous.

Personally, I stopped recognizing New Years in 1993. So, for me, it will remain 1993 until Jesus returns. I'm grateful for this as 1993 was a pretty good year. Jurassic Park and Cool Runnings were released, etc. Shouldn't Christians discard this pagan holiday? Thanks in advance.

I celebrate Christmas and Easter - Yule is actually a few days before Christmas, and Ostara has as much to do with Easter as it does with Passover, for me. As for New Years, I'm not sure it matters as long as you're not being idolatrous.

January sounds idolatrous to me.

Hollywood is thoroughly pagan/ wicked/ trouble,

so you're seemingly contradicting yourself if you like pagan productions from sources essentially always deceptive, with no light in them.

Who's "we", and why do "they" all "know" that one shouldn't observe the birth and death of our Savior?
Yes, that's what Christmas means to me. And the Gregorian calendar is centered on that blessed event.

IIRC, EVERYONE involved in the production of these two films was Christian.

Indeed:

In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, thence also of gates, doors, doorways, endings and time. He is usually a two-faced god since he looks to the future and the past. The Romans dedicated the month of January to Janus.

Yes, the current New Year is the Christian new year...just like Christmas, Easter, Mass, and Sunday as the Lord's day are all Christian (which is why they line up perfectly with the accepted calendar).

So Christians who observe these days are consistent with their Church history.

I don't celebrate any of those days.

Christmas belongs to Christ. It belongs to him because he conquered it and captured it. No one remembers those ancient gods or celebrations because they have been destroyed, as prophesied:

1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

And by the way, Easter is only known as Easter in the english speaking world. Most Christians refer to it as Pasca, meaning Passover.

1Co 5:7 ...For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

1Co 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Perhaps way off of topic but I had always wondered why the only uniquely Roman god was two faced. I never had any idea that New Years was somehow connected to paganism and about the only recognition of New Years I have is I always have ham and cabbage with potatoes. It's just another day off of work for me.

We all know...
this feels a little tongue in cheek, regardless if "we all know" I must have missed the memo.

"In pre-Christian Rome under the Julian calendar, the day was dedicated to Janus, god of gateways and beginnings, for whom January is also named."

How blasphemous.

I suppose we should adopt the 1st century Jewish system of the days of the week too which is 1st Sabbath, 2nd Sabbath, 3ird Sabbath and so on. Rather than our pagan way of saying things: Sun's day, Moon's day, Tiwaz's day, Woden's day, Thor's day, Frigga's day, Saturn's day (all various gods, largely germanic but all adopted from Greek mythology)

Personally, I stopped recognizing New Years in 1993. So, for me, it will remain 1993 until Jesus returns. I'm grateful for this as 1993 was a pretty good year. Jurassic Park and Cool Runnings were released, etc.

ironically you use this pagan counting system to mark this event. Perhaps it can be like "the artist formerly known as prince" and say "the year pagan's refer to as 1993" or "1993 earth's orbits of the sun since Christ's was born" or course January 1st is arbitrarily defined and it could be any day, or better yet the actual day Christ was born would be best, but then you have to figure that day out.

Shouldn't Christians discard this pagan holiday? Thanks in advance.

the church is riddled with pagan forms but it doesn't matter. a lot of values we do can be reconciled to honoring God, like an obelisk steeple. The names of the months, days of the week or celebrating years can be things to give glory to God, for example Sunday is to honor the Sun God Solis but we celebrate the resurrection of Christ on this day and use this pagan identity to glorify God. We can do the same on the first day dedicated to honoring Janus in a ancient pagan system. Plus in the end don't we win since it is used to count the years since Christ was on this earth?

If it's a sin to you, then skip it. I personally haven't seen any prohibition concerning it or any other holiday.
