What is your interpretation of this parable? Its taught alongside the parable of the sower. I wonder if this parable refers to the good soil, i.e without the thorns (thorns refer to thew deceitfulness of wealth) Also, does this parable refer to Jesus teaching about selling everything we own and following Him?

Matthew 13:44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Like all the parables, this parable is about the kingdom of heaven. When a believer sees it, he knows he sees it. It’s a treasure he finds in the world that he roams, hidden right under his feet that he himself uncovers:

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Mt 13:44)

When Jesus tells us to sell what we have and follow him, this is what he means. No longer do we wander the field and miss this treasure hidden under our feet; now we give up all that we have for that treasure. We exchange our old ways for the rich new life we find in the kingdom. Imbued with the Holy Spirit, the believer finds freedom. In Christian fellowship, he finds joy. In honoring Christ, he finds life.

:) The word treasure was mentioned over and over last night in the online sermon I listen to at bedtime.

It was also in hymns at church today and in the sermon about Psalm 139.

:)
Thank you. When i think of this treasure, i think of what God puts in our hearts. Im not saying thats what the parable means, but its what i think of anyway.

Yes, i thought of it that way as well. Thank you.

Well, the sermon last night was about Christ's birth and Mary treasuring what people said in our hearts.

I love the verse from jeremiah how the Lord will write (and does) His will in our hearts. To think of His treasure in our hearts is wonderful.

I love the verse from jeremiah how the Lord will write (and does) His will in our hearts. To think of His treasure in our hearts is wonderful. We are so blessed, may we be able to glorify Him.

Psalm 119 speaks of His commandments being treasured I think? Brb to edit once i've found it.

Yeah Psalms 119:111

Psalms 119:11-13

Psalms 119:162 (kind of)

Only CF's translation doesn't choose the word treasure.
Yes, and the joy and peace we have is a treasure as well. Proverbs say that wisdom and understanding are more valuable than wealth. The Lord promised to teach us His wisdom.

Proverbs 16:16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold!
And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.

Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and [o]acts on them, [p]may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.

I find this saying very problematic and troubling. The man was snooping around on property that did not belong to him. After finding the treasure he conceals it and to cap it off he buys the field without disclosing his knowledge of the treasure. The treasure rightfully belongs to the original owner of the field whether he knows it or not. By acting in this way he has defrauded the owner.

Most everyone has something that they have had to scrounge up enough cash to buy..

Most smokers / former smokers have spent hours trying to find enough change in their car or couch or every other place where one might lose change in order to obtain a pack of cigarettes, others have had to borrow money for a car because they couldn't afford to just buy one, or using a charge card to hit up a sale of one type or another when they wouldn't otherwise be able to buy the desired sale item (shoes, new outfit)

That just shows where a person's priorities are in life. When you don't have money to give in charity but you can manage at the drop of a hat to scrape up the money for other unnecessary items then you see charity is a very low priority in your life, and other things take the place of preeminence.

This parable points out that heart truth, and tells the hearer that this place of priority where you would do nearly anything for, that place of prominence, should be the Kingdom of Heaven.

We should be far more willing to spend an hour in prayer with our Lord seeking that Kingdom then we are digging change out of hidden couch crevices for a pack of smokes.

We should be more willing to go about the business of God then having the latest and greatest whatever.

We should be putting God's will as our utmost priority, no matter what, because the Kingdom of Heaven is worth more than anything this earth has to offer, and if we truly understood that we wouldn't be bothered with petty worldly desires at all, we'd be doing that anything to obtain that Kingdom...

Interesting, i never thought of that. Do you have an interpretation of this parable?

That is like not seeing the wood for the trees.

It says what it says. The point is not fraud; the point is the value of the kingdom of heaven. It's like the following parable, about a merchant who sells all he has in order to purchase a valuable pearl.

I been a Xian for a very long time and have never heard a satisfactory interpretation. Would you mind sharing yours?
That the kingdom of Heaven is the most valuable thing to find. That the guy acted immediately and went to great lengths to secure it.

Christ wasn't talking about property rights in the parable. Who even said that there was a previous owner.

It isn't even relevant but what if it was governmental land, not owned by anyone and the person had to buy the rights to it. Who knows because it is a parable and not a real field.

It is unfortunate that these superfluous details distract you from the meaning, which you surely understand.

Here are a few related verses

Matthew 13:24

Jesus presented another parable to them: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

Matthew 13:46
When he found one very precious pearl, he went away and sold all he had and bought it.

Good seed in the field

Matthew 13:37. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

More good seed

Luke 8:11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Of course a lot more to the parable but didn't want to have a huge post.
