I took this off a random website, so if someone has more accurate stats i would welcome them.

Hunger Statistics

Every year, authors, journalists, teachers, researchers, schoolchildren and students ask us for statistics about hunger and malnutrition. To help answer these questions, we've compiled a list of useful facts and figures on world hunger.
  • Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That's about one in nine people on earth.
  • The vast majority of the world's hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished.
  • Asia is the continent with the most hungry people - two thirds of the total. The percentage in southern Asia has fallen in recent years but in western Asia it has increased slightly.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence (percentage of population) of hunger. One person in four there is undernourished.
  • Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five - 3.1 million children each year.
  • One out of six children -- roughly 100 million -- in developing countries is underweight.
  • One in four of the world's children are stunted. In developing countries the proportion can rise to one in three.
  • If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.
  • 66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone.
  • WFP calculates that US$3.2 billion is needed per year to reach all 66 million hungry school-age children.

As a community of people we do not do much at all for the poor, go out and panhandle and see how much you get, trust me, it will not be much at all.

And when you are homeless the so-called charitable corporations there are do nothing for you.

It's sad to see million dollar corporation doing nothing, but do not judge them, some of them do some things, like red cross, helps victims of disaster in the time of need. Food and clothing with temp shelter are in place. But the homeless still struggle.

It's the single-parent households that get help only for living and that ok, we should help them, but the homeless still get the short end of that stick.

The government and chruches and agencies "we" ? , no - they are perpetuating and increasing poverty for the poor and oppressed, the widows, and orphans, and the sick/ disabled.

Ekkelsia "we" ? As written if we have 2 shirts, and SEE someone who needs it, we give it to them.
If we have food, and SEE someone who is hungry, we feed them.
If we have a roof over our heads, with 'authority' to do this, if we SEE someone homeless or needing a place to sleep for the night, we invite the homeless and the poor travelers in to stay with us for the night.

We cannot give to whom we cannot see (except as written as the Apostles and elders did in the New Testament),
and
we cannot give what we do not have, can we ?

A LOT can be done with two loaves of bread and some fish though, right ? :) (as in the feeding of thousands) ....

Thank you. You are referring to poverty in the US i assume. What about those in Asia and Africa? Can they be helped more?

This is a bad question. I fear that "Are we doing enough to help the poor" usually amounts to absolving ourselves of any sacrifice and criticizing churches or governments and blaming them for not fixing poverty.

A better and more humble question is: "Am I doing enough to help the poor?"

We see them in those stats i posted, and on TV as well, even on the net i think. We see them in Red cross ads and other such charities. But are they truly getting enough help? They cant be if there are still millions and millions who are not getting enough food.

we cannot give what we do not have, can we ?

No we cant.

No we do not do enough to help the poor. That is often because we have been convinced that it is not our job to do that. If one believes it is government's job to help the poor, one can decide that one is not needed in that effort and one is not responsible for carrying it out. To quote E Scrooge when speaking of taxes paid for government aid to the poor "I help to support the establishments I have mentioned—they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there," . I have suggested that individuals are the ones responsible for aiding the poor and been told that individual charity is not sufficient to get the job done and coercion by government is necessary. Yet coercive government does not seem to be doing a better job. It just provides an excuse for the uncharitable to hoard their possessions and for others to virtue signal by complaining that government doesn't do enough while doing very little themselves.

Perhaps you might absolve yourself but not i. Please dont judge me on your reactions. This thread is not to judge anyone, but to raise awareness. Its a good thing, please dont muddy the waters, thank you.

It took me so long to write my response that a better one was posted before I finished.

The poor are a bottomless pit of never ending need.
If we fashioned programs to adequately care for all the poor and homeless the economy would grind to a halt, millions would be out of work, lose their homes, possessions, etc. In other words if we shared what we have with the poor, we would all be poor. Not a good idea to kill the goose.

I guess my focus is on countries that dont have welfare programs. All they have is people who give.

Sure can, if the governments of the countries did something I'm sure.
