James Mattis Is Leaving the Trump White House - The Atlantic
Secretary of Defense James Mattis is resigning over conflicts with President Donald Trump concerning American policy overseas—the highest-profile official to quit the administration over disagreements of principle with the president.

In a resignation letter, Mattis laid out a series of differences with Trump, who he said deserved to have a secretary of defense who was aligned with him. Mattis cited the importance of international alliances and partnerships, constraining Russia, and maintaining an American military presence overseas. By the standard of resignation letters, which typically flatter a president and avoid direct conflict, the missive is a scathing rebuke.

“I believe we must be resolute and unambiguous in our approach to those countries whose strategic interests are increasingly in tension with ours,” Mattis wrote. “It is clear that China and Russia, for example, want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model—gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions—to promote their own interests at the expense of their neighbors, America and our allies.”
So...who had Sec. of Defense leaving next?
tulc(looks like it's going to get even more interesting now) :coffee:

Not me.
Scary thought though. I always felt better with Mattis in charge knowing he had the country's back.

I agree. Wasn't Mattis in some kind of pact with Tillerson and Kelly that if one of them had to leave, all of them would go? Well that is paid for those three.

I don't think he liked the withdraw from Syria and Afghanistan. He probably didn't like how our allies were treated by the administration but his departure was directly connected to Trump's policies he didn't agree with, I think that much is clear.

Yes I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back. But I did not expect Mattis to last after Kelly left.

I think he was tired of all the winning.

Trump is not a Russian puppet. Our withdraw from Syria has nothing to do with this.

Things are great aren't they? Aren't we all sick of winning? We were told that. Trump voters hate the news.

The stock market continues to go down. It's known that a recession is coming.

This guy had no justification for being president. The man trusted to defend our nation, NATO, and all true free societies resigned in the hope he can make a difference. I respect him for it.

Another star takes his place in the #Resistance pantheon.
May he have many joyous encounters in his journeys across the nations talk shows.

Trump is facing a massive conspiracy, deep state, and resignations so frequent no one cares. Prostitutes are paid off and that's a new normal. All news become a conspiracy to prove he is inept or downright crazy...

Or he really is. Are we tired of winning yet?

His own people abandon him, his own party abandons him. When Trump said he knew better than his own generals, that's when you give up.

//Putin Trump won.

When is Trump going to beg one of Putin's underlings to ask Vlad to patient with him until after the next election when he can be more flexible in doing Putin's bidding?

I never heard anything about a pact between them, I don't think that is true. Kelly and Mattis are cut from different cloth than Tillerson and that doesn't mean Tillerson is some how malicious or otherwise he is just not the same.

He sees that treating our allies badly is a matter of national security. I think most intelligent people would understand this.

He said that when he was campaigning and his supporters didn't think he was being serious. Well now they can know that he really was serious.

You're suppose to learn from mistakes, not make the same ones again.
That's true, so why do we continually keep troops in danger in foreign engagements with no prospect of it actually accomplishing anything useful? Even when we achieve a realistic objective , like removing Saddam or the Taliban from power, we then remain in the situation and start pursuing unrealistic objectives that unnecessarily keep our soldiers at risk for decades rather than returning home after achieving what we set out to do.

This is really bad news. Matthis was one of the few sane ones left in the cabinet. Also it confirms all the worst fears about Trumps commitment to NATO.

The last adult in the house. This is not good.
