Why didn't Jesus quote the rest of Isaiah 61 about himself?

I don't think many would even think to ask this or even take any notice of the subject when they read it. The whole thing is clearly speaking of the messiah and those who follow him. Could it be so few notice the "rest of the story" because it clashes with their world view and what the messiah aims to accomplish with his people? Jesus quotes the part in red about himself in Luke's Gospel.

Isaiah 61,
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

3 To appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

6 But you shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: you shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall you boast yourselves.

7 For your shame you shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be to them.

8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD has blessed.

10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

11 For as the earth brings forth her bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

He didn't need to quote the rest because His audience knew what He was quoting by that point anyways.

Liturgically, I'm not certain that the entire prophecy would have been required to be read, anyways- and even if it would, it doesn't mean that Luke would have needed to write it all down.

Hmmm, I guess what I’m wondering if his audiance today knows what he is quoting.

Jesus mission in Palestine was adapted to the beliefs of the Jews and many things he said and did were aimed at fulfilling the prophecies in the OT, so the Jews would except him as the Messiah .so he could raise their religion out of the OT laws and prophets that were obsolete . Like a eye for a eye or a vengeful god instead of the true God of unconditional love who so loved the world .

Most serious bible students understand that what Jesus quoted from Isaiah about himself were those things he was called to do in his earthly ministry. The rest would be done at his return.

"And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him."

Which is why, in another thread, I pointed out the necessity o footnotes that say where the quote is from -- so you can go and read the whole passage.

Ok, many bible students.
Include me.
It is rather obvious that Isaiah 61:2b-11 awaits fulfillment.
First the great and terrible Day of the Lord's wrath, that will change the world and virtually depopulate the entire Middle East. Deuteronomy 32:34-43, Ezekiel 30:1-5, Zephaniah 1:14-18
Then the amazing Second Exodus of all the Lord's faithful people into all of the holy Land.
You will become priests of the Lord....Isaiah 61:6, Isaiah 66:18b-21, Revelation 5:9-10 Our destiny and our great blessing!

Huh?
ALL of it applies to the future. And I believe that I will see it.
Great will be the time when we Christians are the people that God always wanted in His holy Land; His witnesses, Isaiah 43:10, John 15:27 and His Light to the nations. Isaiah 49:8, Matthew 5:14-16

I agree with Jeremy Myers, who wrote:

"I try to follow the teachings and example of Jesus as best as I can. I fail in many areas all the time, but that is where grace enters the scene.

Anyway, when it comes to presenting God as non-violent, Jesus not only shows by teaching and example that God is non-violent (cf. Luke 6:27-30; 9:54-56; 23:34), but when Jesus declared the purpose of His ministry, He cherry-picked a key Old Testament passage to show that He was not going to be violent at all.

The text I am referring to is Luke 4:16-30. In this text, Jesus lays out His mission statement (Luke 4:18-19), which shows that He is only going to restore, heal, forgive, deliver, and set free. As part of His teaching, Jesus used an illustration from the Old Testament about how God sent Elijah the Prophet to a Gentile woman and a leprous Syrian general.

As a result of this sermon, those who listened to Jesus that day tried to kill Him (Luke 4:28-29). Why did they try to kill Jesus?

Because Jesus cherry-picked the Old Testament to present God as non-violent. His audience believed that God was violent, and this violence is then demonstrated in their attempt to kill Jesus (After all, you become like the god you worship)."

Great will be the time when we Christians are the people that God always wanted in His holy Land; His witnesses, Isaiah 43:10, John 15:27 and His Light to the nations. Isaiah 49:8, Matthew 5:14-16

....and the day of vengeance of our God;
So this can't possibly have any application to these scriptures below? At least as far as ancient Israel is concerned?
Matthew 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? 34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. 36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
to comfort all that mourn;
Hasn't God been comforting believers for 2000 years?
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

3 To appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified

I don't see how this has not been being fulfilled for thousands of years.

4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

Here is a good modern day example of this. Everywhere leftists get in control. Where their influence is dominate, things deteriorate. Like Venezuela. Or in the USA Detroit and other rust belt cites. But everywhere Christian's and Christian principle is a dominate influence. Cities and nations are restored, built, prosperous. The culture becomes less corrupt. People have an opportunity for their dreams to be fulfilled.

5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

Strangers (Gentiles) have been the primary laborers in the field of the Lord for thousands of years now. Why wouldn't God prophesy about that?

6 But you shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God:

Isn't the priesthood of believers almost universally accepted. Are we no ministers of God on this earth?
1st Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
you shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall you boast yourselves.
I know what I am to say next is controversial among those with a certain world view. In the lands where Bibles are in every house. Where the Gospel has been preached in power for centuries. Nations where Biblical principle has had great influence in their foundings. Are not believers in those nations eating the riches of the gentiles? I mean the poor in our nations have as much to eat as the rich did for the proceeding 8 millennia. We don't suffer famines anymore. Anyone can drive or fly places people only dreamed of. We live twice is long. I could go on and on with this. Why wouldn't God prophecy about this since it is one of the the obvious results of the influence of his Word and his people in the earth. It's spreading to.
Isaiah 60 :1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.
5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea (Gentile nations) shall be converted unto thee, the forces (wealth) of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.

7 For your shame you shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be to them.

Did not Christians live in shame, oppression, persecutions for 1500 years after Christ came? Do they not still in lands where the Gospel is relatively new and has little influence? But as per what I said about the verse before. We have more than double. Even our poor have more than double. But the early church though, that never got to see this kind of fruit, or promise fulfilled in their days still had the joy.
John 14:22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

Animal sacrifice is not done away with and replaced, or fulfilled by and everlasting covenant via the death of the lamb? And don't we have an everlasting covenant? Hebrews 8?

9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD has blessed.

There is so much prophecy about this. Isaiah 2:2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. 3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Who is the Lords house? Believers! By apostolic declaration: Hebrews 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, Where are these nations flowing to? To the Lords house! Where have people for 2000 years now been going to find God, to to be taught of how ways and to walk in his paths? To a Christian, a church or the Bible. What does it mean they will beat their swords and spears into farming tools? The farmer sows the Word. That is how the influence of the Kingdom of God is spread in the world. By the preaching and teaching of the Gospel and the Word. They don't have the heavy reliance on the sword that ancient Israel needed. Plus nations founded and maintained in varying degree's of Biblical principle are not fighting wars of conquest against neighbors to loot their nations anymore. Which use to be the norm of the ancient world. Speaking of the Kingdom of God. Notice the mountain of the Lord, his Kingdom, his influence in the world is not the only mountain?
10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth her bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

Are not believers supposed to eventually become righteous and demonstrate some of God's righteousness in this world? Does it not follow that they would be a positive influence in their cultures towards righteousness? 2nd Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. As for the rest let me share another prophecy that will make these ones more relevant. Psalm 22:27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before you. Psalm 66:4 All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah. Now there are dozens of prophecies that say this. Back when it was written this singing praises to God was pretty much limited to Israel. Today though. Every nation on earth sings praises to the Lord. From the very poorest of the poor in the jungles of SE Asia, to the richest of the rich who live in kings palaces. To the death camps Christians are toured to death in. The same worship songs are being sung by almost every single family and tribe on earth. Not that this has even come close to reaching its zenith. But why on earth would God not prophecy about it? He knew this would happen and he wrote of it in his Word thousands of years before it happened.

The great and terrible Day of the Lord's vengeance and wrath; a single day of worldwide disaster, remains unfulfilled. It will be the Sixth Seal event, vividly described in over 100 prophesies. The event that will reset our civilization to a lesser degree that what God did in Noah's time. As Jesus tells us will happen, Matthew 24:37-41

Isaiah 61:1 and the first half of verse 2, were quoted by Jesus at the commencement of His ministry, then He said; Today, in your hearing, this prophecy has come true. Therefore, the remainder of this chapter, which is also, obviously prophecy as well, awaits fulfilment. The House of Judah has returned to the Land, but none of these remaining verses can be seen as being fulfilled by them.

V 2-2nd half, God’s Day of vengeance. Isaiah 34:1-8 & Rev 6:12-17 This is the Day when Jesus carries out the judgement of God’s wrath. Psalm 110 describes it very well.
This will be one and the same with the soon to happen, prophesied, judgement of fire. Isaiah 66:15-17, Zephaniah 3:8, 2 Peter 3:7

...”to comfort all who mourn.” Zechariah 12:9-14 - is for the survivors in the Land and for all of His faithful Christian people, scattered abroad.

V 3 To give blessings the Lord’s people, every faithful Christian and settle them into the Promised Land. “To display His glory”, His people, ’a light to the nations’. Before the Return of Jesus Christ for His Millennial reign.

V 4 Although this great Day of Lord’s wrath will cause damage to the Land and buildings, they will be restored and rebuilt. Ezekiel 34:26-27

V 5 Other peoples will come and help, as they will be seen as the Lords people.

V 6 His Christian people will receive the honour of serving the Lord as priests. Revelation 5:10 The wealth of the nations will come to Israel, as it did when the Israelites left Egypt.

V 7 Amazing promise’s of restoration and recompense. Ezekiel 28:24-26

V 8 A new covenant will be made with His people. Jeremiah 30:34

V 9 The nations will acknowledge that God is with the new nation. Zechariah 8:20-23 The new nation called Beulah, Isaiah 62:1-7, in all of the holy Land. Ezekiel 48

V 10-11 A prayer of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, for His mercy and deliverance.

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that her desolation is at hand. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in the midst of the city depart, and let not those who are in the country enter the city; because these are the Days of Vengeance, in order that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Most serious Bible students?

The footnotes on many bibles state that Jesus stopped where he did because Isaiah was referring to his first coming. The remainder applying to his second coming.

Many of these events happen throughout history to one degree or another.

You can say that some of these are types, or patterns, of the terrible events of the "day of the Lord" to come; even a preview of sorts.

A few historical commentaries on Luke 21:22:

John Gill
"For these be the days of vengeance…
Of God's vengeance on the Jewish nation, for their rejection and crucifixion of the Messiah;

that all things which are written may be fulfilled; as in Moses and the prophets; see (Deuteronomy 28:20-68) (Deuteronomy 32:22-26) (Isaiah 6:10,11,12) (Daniel 9:26,27) "

J,F&B
(context) "20, 21. by armies--encamped armies, that is, besieged: "the abomination of desolation" (meaning the Roman ensigns, as the symbols of an idolatrous, pagan, unclean power) "spoken of by Daniel the prophet" (Daniel 9:27) "standing where it ought not" (Mark 13:14). "Whoso readeth [that prophecy] let him understand" (Matthew 24:15).
Then . . . flee, &c.--EUSEBIUS says the Christians fled to Pella, at the north extremity of Perea, being "prophetically directed"; perhaps by some prophetic intimation still more explicit than this, which still would be their chart."

Matthew Henry
"III. He foretels the terrible havoc that should be made of the Jewish nation (v. 22): Those are the days of vengeance so often spoken of by the Old-Testament prophets, which would complete the ruin of that provoking people. All their predictions must now be fulfilled, and the blood of all the Old-Testament martyrs must now be required. All things that are written must be fulfilled at length. After days of patience long abused, there will come days of vengeance; for reprieves are not pardons. The greatness of that destruction is set forth, 1. By the inflicting cause of it. It is wrath upon this people, the wrath of God, that will kindle this devouring consuming fire. 2. By the particular terror it would be to women with child, and poor mothers that are nurses. Woe to them, not only because they are most subject to frights, and least able to shift for their own safety, but because it will be a very great torment to them to think of having borne and nursed children for the murderers. 3. By the general confusion that should be all the nation over. There shall be great distress in the land, for men will not know what course to take, nor how to help themselves. IV. He describes the issue of the struggles between the Jews and the Romans, and what they will come to at last; in short, 1. Multitudes of them shall fall by the edge of the sword. It is computed that in those wars of the Jews there fell by the sword above eleven hundred thousand. And the siege of Jerusalem was, in effect, a military execution. 2. The rest shall be led away captive; not into one nations, as when they were conquered by the Chaldeans, which gave them an opportunity of keeping together, but into all nations, which made it impossible for them to correspond with each other, much less to incorporate. 3. Jerusalem itself was trodden down of the Gentiles. The Romans, when they had made themselves masters of it, laid it quite waste, as a rebellious and bad city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and therefore hateful to them.
