Do you meditate? If so how do you meditate? How does it help you? I like to meditate on peace. Inside i have battles raging and i find that closing my eyes and meditating on peace is helpful. I find refuge in this. This is a huge part of my faith lately.

I pray the Jesus Prayer, and have found comfort and peace in it.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is [a]lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Psalms 119:148 My eyes stay open through the watches of the night,
that I may meditate on your promises.

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

Psalms 1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.

Proverbs 4:20 My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body

Psalms 77:10-12 New International Version (NIV)
10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

Psalms 119:97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands are always with me
and make me wiser than my enemies.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.

Psalms 143:5 I remember the days of long ago;
I meditate on all your works
and consider what your hands have done.

Psalms 104:34 Let my meditation be pleasing to Him;
As for me, I shall be glad in the Lord.

This has set me thinking...
How do I meditate? I read the Psalms and think on them, use them to pray ..Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way O Lord
That I may walk in your truth;
Give me an undivided heart, that I may honour you.
Then I would think of harmony, all my pieces, needs, identity and pray to be made whole, an undivided heart.
I am always thinking of the Lord and his Word...

I have been meditation/contemplating since 1975. usually I just sit in silence and let my thoughts become thin. It is then that my heart seems to silently yearn for God.
Thank you both.

That is not meditating in a scriptural way but in an Hindu way.

Why is it Hindu? Couldn't someone yearn for God when they empty their mind? Is that really something bad?
How can you yearn for God with an emptyy mind? The Hinu's empty their mind so ouside forces can enter.

Oh, i see. Thank you. I have experienced much stress, anxiety, depression, and fear over many years. So much that it left my mind in a terrible state. Sometimes, not always, i can close my eyes and think of God and i feel joy and peace. I like to think that is God. I do however know that its Gods gift to me, its not something i get from emptying my mind. God knows i need it so He gives it, and its His promise. In my opinion.

I love what you have written.

I also do not believe we should empty our minds when we meditate but we should should think about God and His Word.

I love the following verses

Psalm 1 says
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

and

Philippians 4:8 says
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

New age as well.

That is a misunderstanding. Have you not read St John of the Cross? There is an inner purgation that reduces distractions. The emptiness is actually availability to God, attentiveness. It is a peaceful stillness that is not a void but a heightened state of prayer without words...inner or outer.

New age as well.

Simply because the Hindus or New Age believers do something does not mean they have the rights to it. Muslims pray, does my praying to God make me a Muslim? Buddhists chant, are Christian chants Buddhist? No, they are not.

Attempting to quiet the mind is a basic meditation technique, it can be found in Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, and other traditions. The difference is the why on the attempt to quiet the mind.
