How do we rest from our works?

Thank you. I believe it can only mean one of three things. It can mean to rest on the sabbath, or resting from our own efforts to save ourselves, or it could mean that we rest from our evil works. I lean toward the last one but would like to hear scripture or opinion from others.

Or not to completely cease from all or any working at all, but to...? I guess kind of "take it (kind of) easy" in it, or while doing it, or something... things where you might have to exert yourself or whatever, (in general or generally speaking)...

But we should "cease from evil works", or be trying to... But/and taking that kind of easy as well maybe, and not to rest (as in settle) in them (or those evil works) cause that just wouldn't make sense...?

But yes, definitely rest from any kind of self-effort in trying to save ourselves for example or as an example... (It's futile and in vain anyway, and does absolutely no good at all, for anything, and is also not even possible for us as well) (we need to just put complete faith and trust in God for that)... Any work we do do in a religious or spiritual context, should be a joy and not lot's or strenuous or hard labor or (self) effort or work...

And rest on the Sabbath, could just mean taking it easy and concentrating on our spirituality and or God at least one day a week, when were not going to be committed to doing our normal labor or work... Or, IOW's, when on a "day off" or something... And that is for our sake's way more than it is for God's sake at all...

And not working straight for more than six or seven days a week (or more) constantly and non-stop and without stopping to rest and reflect on our spirituality and or God, or the things of God at least one day a week, when or where your not working like you would on the other days...

My understanding has always been that it is looking forward to the rest we will have when Jesus returns.

Never thought about it that way. Good point. Jesus does promise to give us rest. Do you believe thats only in the next life?

I have always tied that verse to what Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30,

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Or it could just mean rest and repose, which is what the Hebrew word Sabbath means. There is nothing in the definition that includes getting the family prepared, travelling to church, sitting through a sermonette and sermon, fellowshipping, then joining some other activity or meal after church, then returning home in a state of near collapse.

It is thought that most Americans are stressed out, exhausted, and sleep-deprived. It seems that we might profit from a Sabbath of rest each week, free from all the baggage we have been attaching to it.

I think it has multiple meaning on multiple levels... Just like what, or many things in scripture does... And that is definitely one of them @maintenance man...

@W2L Jesus did work that was good on the Sabbath, I think resting in work that is good is very good for us... Like volunteering at a food kitchen or pantry or something to feed the homeless, wash dishes, make and prepare food, or something or "anything like that", especially for others, (good deeds but good deeds that you are or can "rest" in, be happy and joyful about) even on the Sabbath, for those who have the desire and want to is or would be good, don't you...?

Or others of us might just need to get alone for a while and shut off, or shut out all the "noise", with a Bible and maybe a pen and paper for awhile or something like that also...

Among other things, yes. The most spiritually uplifting thing I do routinely (but not all the time) is to rest all day on the Sabbath. In my experience one doesn't know how really tired they are until they crash for a full day. Then their body will reveal it to them. And the results are amazing; almost a 'rebirth' of sorts, especially mentally/spiritually. It seems that that particular day provides more rejuvenation than any other day, in my experience anyway.

It means to rest from the works of the law. Sacrifices, ritual cleansing, abstaining from unclean foods, etc.

The law had become a burden and was difficult to keep. Those who accepted Christ entered into his "rest", and no longer had that burden.
